Alrighty everyone, the game is finally out in all primary regions.... IDreamofHime was the first to receive their copy here on the boards. This is the place to discuss it!!!

Welcome to the thread on Negative World where all wondrous Zelda talk can occur. I would recommend that if you wanna talk about deeper-game stuff as we get going, perhaps spoiler-tag it and then describe outside of spoilers where in the game it is. The recent Super Mario 3D Land Discussion Thread is a good example. That'll allow people who aren't too far to read the thread without actually spoiling stuff for them. Just try to be courteous but definitely have fun with the game and discussions!!

Have ye what it takes?

Be sure to hit up the Skyward Sword Game Page and add the game to your collection once you've received yours. Be sure to mark it as "Playing" while you work on it and after you're played it sufficiently, give it a score you deem fitting!

If you've beaten the game, click on over to roykoopa64's Skyward Sword story/ ending discussion (SPOILERS), and general thoughts thread! It's like this thread part deux!!

By the way I've been meaning to say something about this: when I'm in the wii menu skyward's channel has the 'system update' picture. I've been going through gecko to be safe. I thought it didn't have an update? Or is the update nothing?

@CB200
So now we've got ANOTHER person reporting issues.

Maybe GoNintendo would be interested in this...

Got sweaty palms after dungeon 4 boss. Awesome stuff, and reminded me of Wind Waker with wielding an enemy's sword.

Just did that one too! That was a great sequence, and while I didn't like the dungeon at first (ugh, swimming was driving me crazy), it really grew on me around the halfway point and quickly got awesome. The heaven-and-hell thing was a big surprise and a great idea, and apparently climbing up the thread is based on an old Japanese fairy tale. I also dug the Asian/Buddhist aesthetic throughout the whole dungeon. All in all, an excellent section and boss.

I really like the swimming controls, so can't complain there. Yeah, the underground was a nice contrast. Interesting factoid about the rope climb.

Guys, are there heart pieces in every dungeon? Because there is one in the first (not a spoiler, because you can clearly see it. just need to figure out how to get it). And since then I've been looking for some in the dungeons but haven't found any more.

The underworld part you two just mentioned has been my favorite part of SS so far. But we all know I'm a whore for dark atmosphere. But the visuals were incredible there. Might be my highlight of the game so far. That, or the second boss. Guess its clear where my priorities lie haha. Though I did love the second temple and it was an interesting mix, it felt Mario-y to me (especially in terms of music).

@anon_mastermind

I don't know. I got the first one, but didn't see any in the second or third dungeons.

Which a little disconcerting though. I replayed Twilight Princess with Stache before getting into Skyward Sword, and for the first time I noticed a definite pattern of heart pieces- 2 per dungeon, no more, no less. Expecting the same sort of thing here and NOT finding heart pieces in dungeons 2 and 3 worries me.

Have yet to hit the fourth dungeon, so past there I couldn't tell you if theres anymore.

@anon_mastermind

I don't think there are heart pieces in the other early dungeons. I haven't seen any, anyway, and there are less total since you start with 6 containers already.

I found the controls fine for more open areas, but I had trouble in tighter spots, which are plentiful in the first part of the dungeon. It's similar to controlling Link's bird in tighter areas, like if you barely passed up an island and are trying to land there again. It's not that they're necessarily unresponsive, but I found myself struggling with them due to the want to use an analogue stick.

I still think Majora's Mask's Zora Link probably has the best swimming controls in a 3-D game.

Wow...really? I get another "Cannot read game disc error' right as I am about to enter the Gate of Time, though FORTUNATELY, I saved right after I defeated The Imprisoned again, so it wasn't too bad. Still, irritating to say the least.

@TriforceBun@anon_mastermindI think the swimming works in SS just because it doesn't really require you to make swift or quick movements. It's when you move the Wiimote around quickly that you start seeing misreads, and with swimming and the natural slowing of motions that you'd expect, I think it feels really smooth. You can be a lot more precise with where you're going, and it never feels like you're forcing anything with the Wiimote. It feels really natural. It's a lot like the Beetle, but I prefer it here because there's no real temptation to feel like you need to point at the screen while moving around.

@carlosrox

I loved that area as well, and was definitely not expecting it. Really reminded me of the Shadow Temple.

Lawl at T-Bun's latest effort

And on that note, is anyone *else* having issues catching the damn birds?

I have the big net but the bastards still fly away before I can catch them.

I need feathers dammit.
11/30/11, 09:35
@Shadowlink
It's easy as any bug. Just walk slowly up to em and when in front/on top of them, use your net. You can be right in them and they won't fly away.

Only thing that scares birds/insects is speed.
11/30/11, 09:37
@carlosrox

Hmm. I thought I was doing that. Swinging the net was what seemed to scare them away.

I'm clearly doing something wrong.
11/30/11, 09:44
You have to basically be walking as slow as possible and then just swing down on them.
11/30/11, 09:45
I don't know about you guys but I'm dying a lot in my second run. I should carry a potion every now and then..
11/30/11, 11:02
I found that if you swing the bug net pretty softly instead of really fast, you'll almost always catch the bug.
11/30/11, 14:19
@TheBigG753

Yeah I think that might be what it is. Fast movements are scaring the birds. By the time the net gets there they've already gone. Caught a couple tonight so I must be getting better.

Finished the 4th dungeon, that boss was awesome. Slicing him up with his own oversized sword? Satisfying .

What's wrong with me?! I'm having a very hard time getting into this game, but I can't put my finger on exactly why. Admittedly, I've only just completed the first dungeon, but I'm just not getting drawn into the world like I have with past Zelda games.

The tutorial section felt tedious and drawn out...I find the character designs, (at least some of them), quite ugly, and I've already been forced to use dowsing to complete an overly long fetch quest. It's possible that I am no longer intrigued by the tropes of the Zelda universe...and that makes me sad.

I will say, however, that I am thoroughly enjoying the combat, and the attention that must be paid to land hits against enemies. The first fight against Ghirahim, while ugly from an personally aesthetic standpoint, was very fun!

I'm hoping the combat can get me through the long stretches of tedium, (or that the game picks up speed).

This may be just me...

@Simbabbad

Thanks man. I'll bring my comments over to that thread.

@Chozoman

While I enjoyed the Faron Woods part, most players will agree that it's not the strongest section of the game. Personally, I got more enjoyment out of the game as it went along (which is par for the course for Zelda games and myself)--basically each dungeon has been stronger than the last so far, and the pre-dungeon areas have gotten better too.

It takes a bit of time to get to the surface, but I'm not sure why some people have a problem with the Kikwis. I didn't think finding them was tedious or uninteresting--they're all hiding in unexplored parts of the forest, so it's essentially a tool that makes sure you explore the woods fully.
