Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo 3DS) Review (9.8)  by
Super Mario 3D Land in our game database (add it to your collection/log and rate it!)

Super Mario 3D Land is a platformer that has been described by game designer Shigeru Miyamoto as a "3D Mario that plays as a 2D Mario game." As such, Super Mario 3D Land combines the elements of traditional side-scrolling Mario titles, such as linear-based levels, with those of the modern open world Mario titles, such as moving Mario in three dimensions and performing a variety of actions.

Similar to the classic side-scrolling Mario games, the objective of each level is to reach and grab the flagpole located at the end before the time limit expires. Super Mario 3D Land utilizes a similar health system to those games, in which Mario shrinks upon taking damage from enemies or hazards, and damage while "small" results in losing a life. The game offers a number of traditional Mario items, such as the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, and Starman, along with new power-ups that bestow a special suit onto Mario that grants him new abilities. Some revealed power-ups include the Super Leaf from Super Mario Bros. 3, which allows Mario to turn into Tanooki Mario and attack with his raccoon-like tail and float in the air; the Statue Leaf, which allows him to turn into a statue; and the Propeller Box, which acts similarly to the Propeller Block and the Propeller Mushroom from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, allowing Mario to reach high places.

@carlosrox, Zero & triforcebun

Glad you guys liked that. I came across it and knew you guys would like it.

Oh, come on Zero. You might as well play as Luigi and 100% the game. Like, what else do you have to play...other than Zelda this sunday. Anyways, the 2nd time through should go faster for you or anyone for that matter.

Ok, I made it to world 8 today! I will be honest there is a fair amount of coins I have not found and many flagpoles I need to master. So, has everyone noticed, just like in the orig. SMB that grabbing the flagpole when the timer ends in a 6,3 or 1 will net you some celebration. 6=Balloons, 3 =circular firework and 1 gives you some confetti celebration.

I honestly love this game and even though its a little tougher for me than it was for some of you, I wish it wasn't so tough for me. The most amount of lives Ive had was 26. Today, I went all the way down to 1 life and no way was I going to see a 'game over' screen. So I went back to some of the earlier levels, esp. some where I needed all the coins and I replayed those.

So far I have died 185 times. Which I will admit is alot less than the SMG1. I actually never finished Galaxy 2..yea I know, I need beat. Don't worry, that game is on my agenda as soon as I finish Skyward sword...(I told you guys I had a big backlog and it also includes DKCR.

HELP
In world 2-2, I cannot find the 3rd friggin star coin. This was one of the levels I went to replay, cause there is also alot of coins. I played through the level many, many times and for the life of me I cannot find the 3rd star coin. The first one is easy and then the 2nd one is where you have to do a walljump and the coin is hidden along with a timer. And after that the level is almost done. Where the hell is that star coin?!?!?!

@Zero

Here is what you need to do to unlock the final special stage..I also posted this stuff back on page 9:

To Unlock the Final Level:

To unlock the Final Level, get 5 Profile Stars (see below).

Profile Stars
Star 1 - Beat Bowser in World 8
Star 2 - Beat every level as Mario
Star 3 - Beat every level as Luigi

Star 5 - Get every Star Coins
in the game

@gamewizard65

For the thing you have spoiler tagged.... do I need to get gold flags with both Mario and Luigi or is with either or sufficient? Cause I did do all of those gold flags as Mario but as Luigi I am just trying to power through the levels, not worrying about making it up to the top. Is that gonna mess me up?

As for that Star Medal, I was stumped for a while too... so I'll give you a clue but not tell you where it's at...

No joke... its... in the same part of the level as the flagpole. Look at every surface for clues. Somewhere in there is the secret. Also, it's not readily visible until you do something...

@DrFinkelstein

As to your first question..I don't know if you need to do all that stuff with Luigi as well. I found tht info on IGN and I just copied and pasted what they had. I was wondering the same thing

And you know, I was thinking it was out in the flagpole area cause really, thats only place it could be, but of course, its not like I really knew, I just suspected it.

Edit: Found it! I can't believe I didn't notice those breakable blocks at the bottom of the wall before! DUH!

@carlosrox

I'll be honest, most of this stuff I really do not think of as being a spoiler...but I don't want to piss anyone off. Like I mentioned on page 9..no way anyone would figure all this out on his/her own. I am actually glad IGN posted all this stuff, that way I know what the hell I am supposed to do to take advantage of everything the game has to offer/

Some Kotaku asshole spoiled something big (IMO) right in his review on the site. There are at least double the regular worlds amount? 16 worlds?

To clear some things up, you can see if you beat levels with Mario, Luigi, or both by looking at the bottom-right of the top screen. To unlock the final, final, final level you need to beat everything with both bros. This will not take as long as you think. I can speed through every level now.

You DO NOT have to get two gold flags per level. Just one.

To get to the top of flagpoles it's easiest with Tanooki, but you can do the roll/jump combo or the long jump (run, duck, jump).

SPOILER TAGS ARE FUN!

Also, this game ROCKS.

@carlosrox Only if you count worlds full of remixed stages / timed challenges / etc. as new worlds. Although there are a few new stages thrown in there too.
11/18/11, 15:02
Okay, so how many Star Medals are there? 144 in total? I'm on 8-5 now, and I think I've found them all up to this point plus two in each of the daily levels. That's it, right?
11/18/11, 16:08
@ludist210

I don't wanna 'spoil' that number but just keep looking at the amounts above each level. Find the coins in those levels and make sure you have three each. As for the daily stuff, those are less important despite adding to the total. Just keep collecting the 3 per level and you'll be fine.

Got it this morning and reversed the cover straight away, oh my.

UH, who stretched the page? I thought it was Carlos but it's not.

@anon_mastermind

Good question... I removed bryanee's photos for a quick sec to see if somehow those were the culprit but they're not. I've never heard of text stretching the pages, so I have no idea what's up.

Why you always gotta blame ME for everything?

@bryanee1983

I guess Canadians get screwed out of a reversible cover? Mine doesn't have that.
11/18/11, 20:28
Ok, fixed finally. Had to edit a few posts. Yeah, Carlos avoid typing one word than spans several lines of text, thanks.

Maybe its just a euro thing, I dont think NA covers have it either.
11/18/11, 21:36
Aww, I excitedly raced to my game and there was no reverse cover. BOO!

WAT

So it was me? My message even looked shorter than everyone else's!

@carlosrox

But when they quoted you, it added a margin.
