Pre-release Info

Well, after many years, DICE is finally coming out with a proper sequel to Battlefield 2, and they're coming out guns blazing with Call of Duty in their sites! Bad Company 2 was my first Battlefield game, and it was pretty impressive, but it was missing some of the key features of a true Battlefield game, like more players, jets, etc. Battlefield 3 is coming with everything fans of the series want and more. The PC is the lead platform, so it won't have to be watered down for the consoles like the Bad Company spin-off series, but DICE is actually going to make it all work on both the 360 and PS3 regardless.

With the future of Call of Duty up in the air at the moment with Treyarch having shipped Black Ops and out of the picture until 2012 at least, and Infinity Ward in shambles after the mass exodus, we just don't know what we're going to get from the 2011 Call of Duty game, so it seems to be the perfect time for Battlefield to come in and take the FPS crown. I'll admit that I may like the more arcade style of Call of Duty a bit more, but with the formula staying relatively the same all these years, I am starting to get a bit fatigued by it, so I may prefer a change of pace with Battlefield this year, esp. if the next Call of Duty is sub-par.

There hasn't been to much info on Battlefield 3 so far, but what little there is has me very excited. I can't wait to see what true, large scale, Battlefield style warfare is really like.

So far we have this teaser:

And here are some stills from that teaser so that you can get a better look at the all new engine DICE is using for this game, Frostbite 2:

Mmm mmm mmm! Just think, the game is still in development too, so the graphics can only improve from here, now just imagine how much better everything will look upon release! The game is currently slated for a fall release of this year, so that it can go toe-to-toe with Call of Duty, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised, or upset if it got pushed back a bit since DICE has quite a bit on their table at the moment, and it's going to take a lot of work to get this all to run on the consoles.

Here's some information from an issue of Game Informer on the game:

-Aiming for CY Q4 2011 release
-Concept for BF3 has been in the works for years, waiting on proper tech to seamlessly come together
-Frostbite 2.0 is the culmination of this tech, entirely re-written
-Lighting sounds neat, one "probe" contains more lighting information than an entire BFBC2 level.
-Level destruction is going to be "believable" but basically everything is destructible.
-Character animations powered by ANT, what EA Sports uses.
-AI characters and multiplayer characters have different animation sets
-No more "gliding" animations that look off, animation realism is a focus
-Captured their own war audios (bullets, tanks, helicopters, etc) at different distances to ensure realism
-Better audio cues for certain actions, more easily able to listen for threats
-Plan on better, more immediate post release content
-More unlocks than BFBC2
-Dice trying to find a good balance between customization of your character and not having "pink rabbit hat(s)"
-4 classes
-Will talk about squads "later"
-Looking into a theater mode but can't talk about it
-Will have co-op
-There will be a kill-cam but it can be turned off
-BF3's team is almost twice as big as the team for BFBC2
-They want the pacing of the single player mode to be balanced, with highs and lows. Makes the comparison to a song vs a guitar solo.
-Part of the single player mode takes place in Sulaymaniyah - Iraqi Kurdistan.
-"Fuck" will be used often, so M rated for sure
-There will be an earthquake in a level. The destruction sounds very impressive. 7 story building collapses, looks very well done
-Significant narrative that goes with the SP mode
-More than one setting, you're not in the middle east for the whole game
-PC version is lead version
-Why 64 players for PC only? No complaints from the console crowd.
-No mod tools at release. Maybe none down the line either. Frostbite 2.0 is complex and mods tools would have to be dumbed down, so does Dice really want to put their time to that or would it be better spent elsewhere?
-Original story, not based on Bad Company at all.

Here's a link to the Game Informer scans if you want to read the whole story

It's all very interesting stuff, and DICE's claim of it being a next generation game, on current generation hardware seems quite accurate.

The game is getting a full reveal this week at GDC, so expect another trailer, and more news soon.

So, this is the official Battlefield 3 coverage thread, so if you find any news post it here. If a new trailer is released post it here. If you find a cool interview post it here. Let's keep this thread updated with all the news of the game as we prepare for deploymen to the third Battlefield!

Had some spare time for a couple of days so I rented BF3. I've only been playing Campaign so far (still deciding if I should get a online pass to play MP - I do plan on getting the game by end of year). I have been pretty impressed. I'm maybe two hours in at this point and I have to say it's very good. Because I had such high expectations going in I can't say I was blown away but I definitely haven't been let down either. After getting to a place where I was dying a few times I decided it was bed time - but instead I went back and replaced the second mission just to appreciate the sheer beauty of the game. Of course not beautiful in the way something like Muramasa is but beautiful in the realism and amazing lighting effects.

Okay now it really is bedtime "yawn".

I'm Neg_Onilink on origin. Just started playing today. I'm in Australia so it would likely be painfully laggy on American servers.

The only thing remotely fun about Subspace Emissary were the cutscenes. My old roommate and I are still trying to forget we wasted so much of Brawl's launch day on that mode.

Damn I really suck at flying jets. I get shot down way too soon, and can't unlock anything because of it.

@Brick Did you play BFBC2? And if yes how were you at flying the helicopters? Sorry if this info is in the thread but since this thread is like 21 pages I didn't wanna read through it all. I was horrible at flying heli's. I even tried on Onslaught and still got shot down quickly. Maybe if I would have stuck with it I could've improved.

I'm farther into the SP and really enjoying it. Yes the thrill/challenge/strategy/depth isn't there like in MP playing against live opponents but still I do really enjoy a good SP campaign. I haven't enjoyed one this much since Medal of Honor's SP.

I've gotten better at the jets tonight because I finally just used the arrows on the keyboard to do pitch and roll. I was finally able to take down a couple of enemy aircraft. Hopefully I can unlock some homing missiles or flares soon.

I friggin love this game.

@Robknoxious1

I was alright at flying helis.
10/30/11, 05:53
I'm loving the helis in BF3 i was in the air for at least 5 mins. The game had to end =/. Had little opportunity to fly the jet though.
10/31/11, 09:36
This game has some definite balancing issues. I know unlocks are the big thing this era but some of these are just totally unbalanced. If you don't have IR flares with the jet good luck because you are going to get locked and shot down very fast. Conversely, once you get the flares you are basically safe from stinger missiles. The flares work whether they are fired before or after the rocket is fired and are ready to be deployed again by the time the guy with the stingers reloads, and locks on.

I'm in the shitty position now (since I didn't use the jets immediately) where I have stingers but most jets have flares yet when I do get a jet I don't have access to the flares and most people have access to stingers. I have heard that the jets get homing missiles eventually too. So good luck trying to upgrade your jet then.

Absolutely ridiculous.
10/31/11, 10:44
I was excited to unlock the Stinger missiles the other day cuz I thought "oh this'll be cool, I can shoot down a fuckin' heli or even a JET" but the fucker just used flares every time. They shoulda learned from BO where you can, you know, actually shoot shit down pretty easily?

As much shit as people like to talk about COD, I thought BO was pretty well balanced. Hopefully MW3 is even more so, though it could go either way.

Back on topic though I'm really enjoying the MP a lot more, even with the less than hot DA controls. I've been tinkering with the sensitivity here and there and I finally settled on a quicker sensitivity that I'm going to force myself to get used to. I've gotten a lot better already, too. I feel I can actually aim at stuff now.

I've been poking around NCIX to see what kinda computers I can get in the next few months. I just got me a part-time job so I finally have cash flow after about 2 years of being pretty damn broke. So, I can buy stuff again! Feels good man! But yeah, I feel so good knowing I no longer have to worry about being able to afford stuff like a new computer, new keyboard, new monitor, Wii U, games, etc, etc. I just need to save up for another month or two just so I don't blow ALL my money away on useless stuff.

Just so there's no mistake this time around, I'm gonna ask people on these boards what's good and what's not when the time comes. I'd probably be spending around 1200-1500 with tax for a good computer, including a 27 inch monitor. My buddy got a 27 inch monitor and I thought "hell it's only 3 inches bigger than mine, how different can it be?" And fuck was I wrong. My 24inch monitor is nice, but his is obscenely beautiful. I haven't coveted a piece of tech in awhile, but that one I do. I want a monitor that size. They're not even too expensive anymore either. About 300-400 for a pretty damn good one?

Anyways, I somehow turned this into something else when I originally came to say I was enjoying the MP a lot more now haha. Oh yeah, and Rush seems to be my game for now.

Battlefield 3 lead platform 'switched to consoles' mid-development.

Well that's disappointing to hear, and it makes me wonder how different the game would have been if it had stayed with PC for lead platform.

This is where I smell EA coming in, fucking things up saying, "No, you can not delay the game because we have to beat Call of Duty this year!". They should have just let DICE do their thing. Hopefully the game does well against CoD, and EA can finally be happy, and stop trying to desperately to take down Call of Duty.

I don't have this game yet, but every single time I go to reddit's gaming page, there's at least two or three posts about how fucked up Origin is. EA really fucked their service up.

I'm disappointed to hear the single player in this game is so linear; I hate linear FPSes. Hopefully the multiplayer gives you more freedom at least.
11/02/11, 02:52
@Brick
What a surprise.
11/02/11, 14:20
So what's fucked up about Origin? I've had no trouble so far.
11/02/11, 16:58
@Griptor
Cuz they shat all over a proven and accepted service like Steam where the entire PC community has set up camp. That's my opinion at least.

I just haven't really seen any discernible advantage to the user with Origin. EA benefits from having their own ecosystem for their games, but other than that? The user is forced to deal with another game store app, figure out how everything works with voice chat and stuff, learn different shortcut keys to access the dashboard, etc. And it doesn't even look like all EA games are on Origin (yet), and if that's the case, then I really don't understand the point of Origin. If I have an option to get something on Steam or on Origin, I'm choosing Steam every time, purely for the fact that all of my games would be in a list with each other, haha. I like Steam. It's like a digital shelf that I keep all my games on.

In the end, it's not really a big deal, but it just sucks to not be able to use Steam. I'll just be pissed if they take Mass Effect 2 off of Steam, and for some reason I start having technical issues getting my data to cross over from ME to ME2.

In the end, as a user, it just feels redundant. I'm not opposed to another way to buy games online, but I'd rather these stores not be publisher exclusive. If I saw a Gamestop, a Best Buy, and a theoretical EA retail store all in the same shopping center, the EA store would be the last place I'd go to. Then again, if the EA store was the only place I could get EA games at, then I'd obviously have to go there. So, if Origin winds up being the only place I can get EA games at, then I'll go there. If I see Mass Effect 2 on sale on Steam, I'm picking it up in a heartbeat.

Price wise, I haven't seen EA really gauge the user. I actually saw Crysis 2 for cheap when I first got on there. I also saw the original Crysis on Amazon for under $10, *downloadable*, a couple weeks ago. With all of that taken into account, I don't really understand the point of Origin at all.

Forgot to mention I finished SP a while ago and while far too linear, I liked the experience and enjoy how the story was told. I thought it was pretty well done. Mostly forgettable I guess, but really, I like how the story was told quite a bit.

@PogueSquadron
I'd be a lot more forgiving of Origin if they started releasing old games, one in particular; Medal Of Honor Allied Assault, one of the best FPS of all time. I love that game so much I'd be quite accepting of a new service like Origin just to play it. Especially if I could play it online again cuz I was fuckin' world-class at that game and MP kicked ass. One of the best MP games ever for me.

Do it EA. Release MOHAA and I'll become an Origin whore. Yes, I like MOHAA that much.

@PogueSquadron
Agreed. Most people who play PC games will.
