Pre-release Info

Well, after many years, DICE is finally coming out with a proper sequel to Battlefield 2, and they're coming out guns blazing with Call of Duty in their sites! Bad Company 2 was my first Battlefield game, and it was pretty impressive, but it was missing some of the key features of a true Battlefield game, like more players, jets, etc. Battlefield 3 is coming with everything fans of the series want and more. The PC is the lead platform, so it won't have to be watered down for the consoles like the Bad Company spin-off series, but DICE is actually going to make it all work on both the 360 and PS3 regardless.

With the future of Call of Duty up in the air at the moment with Treyarch having shipped Black Ops and out of the picture until 2012 at least, and Infinity Ward in shambles after the mass exodus, we just don't know what we're going to get from the 2011 Call of Duty game, so it seems to be the perfect time for Battlefield to come in and take the FPS crown. I'll admit that I may like the more arcade style of Call of Duty a bit more, but with the formula staying relatively the same all these years, I am starting to get a bit fatigued by it, so I may prefer a change of pace with Battlefield this year, esp. if the next Call of Duty is sub-par.

There hasn't been to much info on Battlefield 3 so far, but what little there is has me very excited. I can't wait to see what true, large scale, Battlefield style warfare is really like.

So far we have this teaser:

And here are some stills from that teaser so that you can get a better look at the all new engine DICE is using for this game, Frostbite 2:

Mmm mmm mmm! Just think, the game is still in development too, so the graphics can only improve from here, now just imagine how much better everything will look upon release! The game is currently slated for a fall release of this year, so that it can go toe-to-toe with Call of Duty, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised, or upset if it got pushed back a bit since DICE has quite a bit on their table at the moment, and it's going to take a lot of work to get this all to run on the consoles.

Here's some information from an issue of Game Informer on the game:

-Aiming for CY Q4 2011 release
-Concept for BF3 has been in the works for years, waiting on proper tech to seamlessly come together
-Frostbite 2.0 is the culmination of this tech, entirely re-written
-Lighting sounds neat, one "probe" contains more lighting information than an entire BFBC2 level.
-Level destruction is going to be "believable" but basically everything is destructible.
-Character animations powered by ANT, what EA Sports uses.
-AI characters and multiplayer characters have different animation sets
-No more "gliding" animations that look off, animation realism is a focus
-Captured their own war audios (bullets, tanks, helicopters, etc) at different distances to ensure realism
-Better audio cues for certain actions, more easily able to listen for threats
-Plan on better, more immediate post release content
-More unlocks than BFBC2
-Dice trying to find a good balance between customization of your character and not having "pink rabbit hat(s)"
-4 classes
-Will talk about squads "later"
-Looking into a theater mode but can't talk about it
-Will have co-op
-There will be a kill-cam but it can be turned off
-BF3's team is almost twice as big as the team for BFBC2
-They want the pacing of the single player mode to be balanced, with highs and lows. Makes the comparison to a song vs a guitar solo.
-Part of the single player mode takes place in Sulaymaniyah - Iraqi Kurdistan.
-"Fuck" will be used often, so M rated for sure
-There will be an earthquake in a level. The destruction sounds very impressive. 7 story building collapses, looks very well done
-Significant narrative that goes with the SP mode
-More than one setting, you're not in the middle east for the whole game
-PC version is lead version
-Why 64 players for PC only? No complaints from the console crowd.
-No mod tools at release. Maybe none down the line either. Frostbite 2.0 is complex and mods tools would have to be dumbed down, so does Dice really want to put their time to that or would it be better spent elsewhere?
-Original story, not based on Bad Company at all.

Here's a link to the Game Informer scans if you want to read the whole story

It's all very interesting stuff, and DICE's claim of it being a next generation game, on current generation hardware seems quite accurate.

The game is getting a full reveal this week at GDC, so expect another trailer, and more news soon.

So, this is the official Battlefield 3 coverage thread, so if you find any news post it here. If a new trailer is released post it here. If you find a cool interview post it here. Let's keep this thread updated with all the news of the game as we prepare for deploymen to the third Battlefield!

Getting shot with something that actually hurts might be a little much. I guess it would encourage people not to get shot though haha. Could be cool, but it's a little much. I think having one's head in the game is enough. And maybe camera control through head movement like I experienced at SIGGRAPH would be cool. Actually walking though is too much.

@carlosrox

It's certainly not conducive to everyday play, but I think it has about as much appeal (if not more) as going to the movies. It's an experience (pain, physical exertion, aural stimulation, visual stimulation), typically for special occasions. I'd pay good money for that kind of experience.

Also, while paintballs hurt (they really do), it's nothing compared to actually getting shot. So I think it's a nice compromise.

Thank god they don't have a room like that for Bit.Trip.Runner.

Oh good God yes!

Uhhh it's everywhere! It's all over the place!

Holy Jesus. I still freak out every time I see the roof or ceiling cave in. That's unbelievable.

@Brick

Hot DAMN! That looks (and sounds) absolutely amazing! I need this game!

I'm having a weird issue here. Is youtube down?

Or has the IT department finally realized Firefox somehow allowed me past their block all this time?

edit - Heh. Back already.

Seems Carlos' skepticism may have been right as Battlefield on Wii U is "probably not Battlefield 3".

Just watch them make a version of Battlefield Heroes with the cartoony artstyle since it's Nintendo

@Brick
Battlefield 4 ?

Maybe it'll be a special edition or something. One with extra DLC/modes? It'd be retarded as shit to release the exact same game over half a year later though so I can't really blame them.

That's why I still think Wii U shoulda released this year. 2012 is a pretty shitty release date IMO. Won't all the big games have blown their load by then? What are the big games we know of for 2012? At least mid-late 2012? And even then, we might be looking at the "risky business" bullshit for Nintendo again and they may hold off new IPs and shit. There won't even be any big IPs ready for release at that time.

I never really pieced it all together til just now with this post, but I think 2012 is a shit release for Wii U unless some big guns happen to release around the time it releases.

@carlosrox

No one is talking about games coming out in 2012 yet. There will be a bunch of big name titles.
10/21/11, 09:33
@stephen08
Are we sure? Like what? They blew their load this year and this gen's consoles are dying so I find it hard to believe they'll have anything as big for 2012. They have to prepare stuff for 720 and PS4 (and yes, even Wii U, I still know it'll be treated as a second class citizen in the end).
10/21/11, 09:36
Yeah, I really can't imagine much effort being put into BF3 on WiiU. What would be the point from EA's perspective? The demographic that this game is going for is going to sell to PS3, 360, and PC gamers. By the time BF3 comes out on Wii, you'll be able to get it on 360 for $30 somewhere, or Steam will have it on sale from time to time. If the majority of people interested in BF3 haven't bought it by November 2012, then I think they'll still want to get it on one of the current systems. I can't imagine the tablet functionality being enough to make a significant amount of gamers wait a year to play it.

I'd like to say the same thing about Batman as well...but the thing about Batman is...he's Batman. So many people love Batman. I think a WiiU version of Arkham City, at launch, with WiiU specific modes (asynchronous multiplayer, for instance), could actually sell surprisingly well. BF3? I think that ship will have sailed by then. And anyone looking to get aboard that ship, likely won't be getting on board with the WiiU version of the game.
10/21/11, 09:44
First 10 mins of BF3 are up. Looks pretty awesome (IMO, though I know people will say it looks like generic shooter, blah blah) though DICE has already been caught in a lie.

The game pretty much starts off with shooting even though they claimed it'd be at least 5 mins in before the first shot was even fired.

They've also copied Black Ops heavily. If you see the vid you'll know what I mean.

Edit: Didn't post vid cuz it's leaked and will prob be taken down by the time anyone sees it. It's up on Kotaku via Youtube and the sound and video quality are pretty shit. It's off the PS3 version.

@PogueSquadron

Well, lucky for the WiiU owners, it appears Steam will never run a sale on BF3.
10/22/11, 03:56
@carlosrox

Mass Effect 3, Hitman Absolution, Halo 4, inevitably another CoD game, BioShock Infinite, Soul Calibur V, Tomb Raider, Counter Strike: GO, Ninja Gaiden 3, Prototype 2, Far Cry 3, Darksiders 2, and Prey 2 for starters. Again though, we aren't going to know much until this holiday season is over. Publishers want people to pick up stuff that is coming out now so they try not to distract them with stuff too far out there. Look back over the past few years. I cannot honestly say there has been a single year where there was not a wealth of compelling content to play.
10/22/11, 07:37
@missypissy Haha, it was really just reflex for me to write Steam. Freakin' Origin.
10/22/11, 08:02
@stephen08
I didn't know Halo 4 was coming to Wii U, not to mention CS:GO, Bioshock Infinite which ATM have no plans for Wii U.
10/22/11, 08:31
@carlosrox Look who's being Mr. Negative now!
10/22/11, 10:45
@carlosrox
You can't change the goal posts like that. Clearly if we are talking about publishers pushing out all the good stuff this year we are talking all platforms and not Nintendo exclusive. Hell, even if we were talking about that I'd predict that Wii U launch means more great games than the Wii had this year.
10/22/11, 10:52
@stephen08

I've personally released more great games this year than the Wii.

Anyways, bought my copy of BF3 for PC with release date delivery for $30 :D They had the Digital version on sale for $50, with pre-loading, but you can't use Amazon credit on those (why?) so I just figured what the hell, go for the physical copy. Will probably save me time since it would take me a day or something to download the game.
