Well I played a bit and did the quest where I had to restore the village or whatever by going out and defeating carnivores. Seems like a fun game so far though there's a lot to learn, that's for sure. I switched over to that big iron sword I had in my stash... it's so slow. I'm not sure if I'll stick with it. Definitely seems like you need to learn how to use it and when to attack your enemies without leaving yourself too open. I'll probably play some more tonight.
I wouldn't suggest starting the game off gunning because it is terribly expensive. Also early on the monster parts aren't that profitable and you need all of them to make weapons and armors. In my opinion, rathian is the first monster that you can easily and effectively sell parts.
Weapons aren't that expensive early on, so it's still possible to experiment within reason, maybe one of each weapon type (sans bowgun).
I agree that it's probably not profitable to use a bowgun early on because of ammo. Selling monster materals for profit is something that is hard to do early in the game as well. I was just speaking for myself. What I do now to fund my massive spending (hey, all that armor and weapon upgrades don't come cheap). I just bought Sinister Saints for 50k a few days ago.
Usually when I'm running low on money I sell some monster materials I know I have no need for. For example, a few days ago I sold a lot of Agnaktor+ parts. I had a lot left over after upgrading all of the low rank pieces, and forging the full + set. Of course I didn't sell valuable items like beaks and claws+, just things like hide+ and fin+ which are more common.
By the way, I'm about to log on for about 2 hours right now.
Get your feet SOAKED (way more than "wet!") in single player before even thinking about going online.
If you go online out of the box, you're going to have a whale of a time, and you're either going to: -Hold people back (they won't say it though!) -Frustrate yourself
Online guys are tougher than offline guys, too. They're meant to be hunted in packs. I think I hit Online for the first time around the 50 hour mark, actually.
Actually I don't. It doesn't really matter though. You can just type with the on-screen keyboard. I don't think a KB will be necessary. By the way, I'm about to log on right now.
Is there any point in keeping all the monster materials you pick up? I'm getting a bunch of fangs and just putting most of them in my item box. I'm almost not really done with the "tutorial" I guess. I just got done hunting underwater and decided to check out the forest some more to hunt breeding spots for the carnivores. That was a heck of a lot of monsters! But I collected some iron ore, upgraded a sword and was able to dispose of many of them easily enough. I managed to get around 1900 gold (or oz?) so that was a nice run.
@VofEscaflowne Yes, absolutely! Keep all the materials that you can, because you'll use them later to craft stronger armor.
It should be time for you to take on the Great Jaggi! This is where you'll get a real taste of what this game's all about. Bring potions, learn his patterns, and good luck!
Well dammit I only sold a few that I can easily get anyway. Guess I'll have to find another source of income... farming seems to maybe work? Assuming I can find something that actually sells for a decent amount. Those Exciteshrooms could be easily farmed I guess while I go out and hunt.
I've done about 6 or 7 of the 1 star quests, and I'm starting to get a hang of the game. There are still a few things I'm not too sure about, like charms and skills and so forth. I've been storing most of the materials I've gathered, because the item box holds a ton of stuff and I'm not sure if I'll need it later on.
@anon_mastermind I still haven't come across the Great Jaggi. Perhaps soon?
@Mr_Mustache Yeah, there was one quest where I had to defeat a few Jaggi, but not THE Great Jaggi. I assumed this was a giant boss-like monster, but maybe I just misunderstood.
I'm not sure if I really enjoy it THAT much yet. It's fun, sure, but it feels so... Japanese? I guess of course that's to be expected I mean you have a pick axe, spears to hunt underwater, bug nets, etc, but they can all break on you. Then your weapon also needs to be repaired... I mean progressing is still fun but there's nothing terribly exciting yet. Maybe once I get past the fetch quests but again, they just consist of running around hunting for items which is not fun. Argh
Anyway, this is enough for tonight before it puts me to sleep.
Great jaggi is a two star quest. Money shouldn't be too much of a problem once you fight real monsters. If you try to get the rarer materials you will need to kill the monster multiple times. I only sold parts till after i made the armor. Even then i only sold the common things, like hides and scales. If relying on the farm for cash i suggest seeds. they cost little resources and net a solid profit.
@VofEscaflowne Leather armor helps keep things from breaking on you. A trader should come soon and then you could trade commodities for Mega Pickaxes, nets, and spears, whigh break even less often.
Oh, so the Great Jaggi quest is 2-star? Hm, then I guess the whole of 1-star quests is basically a tutorial (sorry, it:s been a loong while since my 1-star quests). The 2-star quests are where you'll see what the game is all about. Hunting large monsters is the most satisfying gameplay I have experienced in quite a while. It requires skill, knowledge, and perseverance. Good luck!
