I've heard that Wii Speak support isn't the greatest in Monster Hunter. Is this true? I don't even have the device, but my sister does, and if it works really well I may consider buying one. But I'll probably just use a keyboard since I've already got one of those.

I've only used Wii Speak once, with Anand. It worked fine, I guess, but his voice was kind of muffled, like someone put a plastic bag over his head (I hope he's ok). Keyboard is fast and efficient.

The other guys could probably give you a better run-down on Wii Speak. I just recently got mine on Boxing Day (10 dollar AC bundle). If you're able to use the telephone or Skype instead, those may be a better option.

I'll be online in a sec

I was gonna ask this earlier but I forgot. Classic controller or Wiimote? I heard varied opinions around launch but is either better than the other?

@VofEscaflowne

I have had no major problems with my Wii-mote. I haven't bought a classic controller yet, but i suggest going for it. The wii-mote should work in most situations, but the common criticism is that the positions aren't always read. I agree, but I got used to it after a solid chunk of time. The classic controller insures that you will do what you intend. The wii-mote causes the most problem with lances cuz you need to hold the wii-mote perfectly upright to counter which is hard midcombo.

Didn't you get the bundle? It comes with the game for a reason
01/22/11, 06:45
@Wilie345

Thanks, I guess I'll start off with the classic controller. I just read the manual and thought I'd maybe start playing a bit tonight but damn, this game looks so overwhelming. I think I'll keep it for tomorrow

@anon_mastermind

Yes but if people were arguing about which was better (and many people do have a classic controller) then I thought of all help, you guys would know for sure here.

Well, I haven't tried the Wiimote/nunchuck combo. That's because the CC Pro feels really good to me. I know Simba prefers the W/N combo, but I think everyone else is rockin' the CC.

I just bought Monster Hunter. How do I join?

What do you mean? Join the thread? You're already in!

If you're asking how to go online (or when), you should follow Anand's advice up there about the One and Two Star Quests offline first.

Mh3 was ment to be played with the ccpro :P

Look for me online
01/22/11, 09:24
Look for me online as well. I'll be happy to help. RgR HR (Hunter Rank) 83 or so I think.

@canonj
I think one- and two- star should take... 3-5 hours?

You guys are totally getting a good n00b group together. I'm envious of your fresh perspective!

I like the CC Pro. It's just good to have, since it's so much better than the CC. I found W&N a little difficult to get used to. And it lacks a dedicated camera stick.

@VofEscaflowne
The game is definitely confusing at the beginning. Hell, I've been playing for over 3 hours and there are still things I don't understand.

@anandxxx
I think it's going to take me a bit longer than 5 hours, since I've been playing for over 3 hours now and just completed my first real quest.

I have another question: Is it best to stick with the default knife and shield weapons at the beginning of the game? Or should I already be experimenting with other types of weapons, like the big sword or hammer?

WELCOME!

Yeah..I can be up for some noob MH hunting whenever... with Okami and other games (and life) taking up some time I haven't played MH in awhile.

Play the offline for a bit first - get some basics down with combining items etc - it will catch on eventually. I still don't know half this game...

I forgot to tell you all that you need the secret password to join but I guess I'll let this slide once

Have fun and post your conquests! (and failures too)

Yeah, to be honest, I don't remember how long it took. Probably not too long, though.

Keep in mind, the first quests are just introductory stuff. Later on in the game, it's all action. You're not going to have to, like, forage for mushrooms.

Also, you don't NEED to understand all of the systems right away. But if you have questions, you can ask us.

As far as weapons, sword and shield are a good starter. But play with whatever you want. Everything's manageable in the beginning.

About choosing a weapon, i only recomend sticking to one till about lagi. There isn't enough money to upgrade every type as you go early in the game. To decide which weapon type i suggest forging the first iron weapon of each and killing jaggi in the forest. Test them out and get comfortable with one.

Also I found that growing stormsender seeds in an upgraded farm can yield roughly 30,000 zenny every ten day cycle. if anyone is ever press for cash.
01/22/11, 18:29
anand is right.... this is the perfect time to experiment. you should buy one of each weapons now and figure out what's ur favorite
01/22/11, 18:32
@canonj

I started playing online well after 20 hours. Although I probably unlocked it way before then. My point is, take your time. As far as weapons go the best advice I can give you is experiment. It took me a while to find a weapon I fell comfortable with. Up until then I had been using the standard SnS, now that's probably my least favorite weapon. I've really taking a liking to bowguns, they're a whole different ball game. Every weapon has it's advantages and disadvantages. Find what you like.

@Wilie345

I've started selling monster materials for cash. I think it's better than farming goodbugs or seeds.

I also agree that starting offline is a good way to learn the game. I also put 10 hours offline before realizing that it wasn't for me
