Nintendo E3 2013 Wii U: Mario Kart 8 announced (trailer + images inside!)

Another non-surprise, but it was still nice to get our first glimpse at the upcoming Mario Kart 8 for the Nintendo Wii U. The trailer shows off the return of bikes, as well as hover cars that ride along roller-coaster like tracks! Is this Mario Kart, or F-Zero?!

Mario Kart 8 is currently slated for a Spring 2014 release.

Apparently they were considering underground digging in the game?! Wonder how that would work. Or maybe it didn't, and that is why they didn't include it.


Mr. Yakuki: What about that underground thing?

Mr. Konno: Yes. In "7" we had the glider, and submersion in water, and so when we were also thinking about new ideas for "8," and we thought, "well, since we did all that, why not put a drill on the karts, and have them go through the earth somehow, subterranean racing." But, we kind of thought that's not such an interesting idea, and after that we hit upon the antigravity mechanic.

Sounds interesting, if they could pull it off. What would be really slick is if there was some sort of drill ITEM. So maybe certain walls or something could be drilled through, if you shot the drill item at it, and then you could use that hole. Then the course would change over the race, with many different openings popping up, like swiss cheese!

Might be too much for Mario Kart, but interesting to consider nonetheless.

I could see a Monty Mole type of item, but I suppose it wouldn't really function that much differently than a red shell. Maybe it would dig a little bit in front of the next kart, so that the person has a slight chance of avoiding it if they're good.

I wish they'd bring back character specific items. I liked how the Mario Bros. got fireballs, Peach and Daisy got deflectors, the Koopa Troopas were more likely to get triple shells, etc. I thought that was a great idea in Double Dash.

Keep the basic defaults, like mushrooms, starmen, bullet bills, shells, but give us back character specific items.

Oh no, I meant THE WALL. Like a cave where you could drill through the walls to literally create your own paths. :)

But yeah, a pitfall-like item could be fun too.

@Zero Sounds inspired by the Drill powerup from Super Mario Galaxy 2. I'm not sure how well the idea would work though, since you couldn't really launch items at others underground, so they made the better choice, most likely. I like @-JKR-'s idea of a drill item, though.

@ludist210 I like the idea of character items, but if they come back, they need to have better balance. Some are way too powerful and others too weak.
