Although we knew that a 3D Mario game was on the way for the Wii U, little did we know that it would be a sequel to Super Mario 3D Land on the 3DS. The Super Mario 3D World trailer shows off some, including 4 player co-op and a... cat suit?
But don't listen to me, watch the trailer below!
Super Mario 3D World is due out in December 2013, just in time for the holidays! Stay tuned for more details!
Some more information from GoNintendo:
- when working on Super Mario 3D Land, they thought multiplayer would be great - this didn't make the cut for the 3DS - they felt the power of Wii U could help them achieve this - is influenced by the eccentric and wild levels designs from the Galaxy - won't comment on story yet
No online would be disappointing but at this point I just kind of assume it. On Wii U, anyhow, for anything from Nintendo that isn't Smash or Mario Kart. 3DS titles get all kinds of random online for some reason.
Maybe it's because I prepared myself for the letdown of a 3D Mario future based on 3D Land's template, but I was pleasantly surprised by the trailer. Sure, the dull controls from 3D Land probably return, but the trailer shows levels are WAY less claustrophobic than 3D Land's sparse corridors, and it looks like the game has Galaxy's touch for creative gimmicks, like the Yoshi boat. Plus, multiplayer. NSMB's multiplayer is an absolute blast, and I expect the same from this. Lack of online is pretty stupid in 2013, but again, it's not like we weren't prepared for this.
I'm looking forward to playing this, and I'm also looking forward to the day we get a real Mario 3D sequel to Mario 64 and Sunshine. Something with WORLDS again, instead of just levels. Galaxy was close, but not the same feel as the other two, which were my favorites.
Let those dreams go, JKR. I have. And I'm much happier in this hopeless world. Really I am.
After the initial shock of this being the 3D Mario game, I must say this does look pretty damn good. The Nintendo Direct feed made it look like a 3DS game, but it looks a lot more open (like Nate said) that cat powerup looks ridiculous and kind of changes the game for Mario, and I'm sure it will be quality. I would have loved to see a Mario 64 type game, but this probably won't disappoint.
Now, why Nintendo is still unable to make these games online is beyond me. We have voice chat built into the damn gamepad, people can talk while playing online.
Now that the initial shock and disappointment has worn off, I feel better about it. I'm sure it'll be a great game and my girlfriend hopefully will have moved here by then so I'll have someone to play co-op with. If you're right though Carlos, I still would've much rather had the 64/Galaxy style game now and this later.
Yeah, this is definitely the Wii U Mario game... and the more footage I watch, the more excited I am.
I am very curious if this means that the other EAD Tokyo group is working on something else (not necessarily Mario at all)... they haven't released a big game since the original Super Mario Galaxy. What the hell are they doing?
Hmm, I don't see anything in the trailer that is screaming UBER CREATIVE the way early Galaxy videos did, and then again with Galaxy 2. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it will be a wonderful game (I liked 3D Land a bunch), just haven't seen that clearly unique "woah that looks like SO MUCH FUN" stuff yet.
Although I will say this, despite not caring about cats much and finding their meows in this game a bit annoying, the cat stuff does look fun.
