@kriswrightBut..what happened exactly is what people were clamoring for. "Give us a Mario game at launch!" It happens, for the first time since N64?, and complaints abound. Ya know? I'm not nutso about NintendoLand either, but Renjaku refused to play anything else for weeks. Sooo..SOME people liked it. @VickiLI can say that I think everyone should experience Lego City Undercover (again, I don't recall a funnier game ever), and Monster Hunter 3U, even after stinking a boatload of hours into Tri, 3U still feels FRESH and has me wanting to "find all the things" again. @AnandHA! It IS a Sonic thread. Wow. Uhhh, I love the Blue Dude with the 'Tude. I also want to see he and Mario team up in a sidescroller, and Tails and Luigi. Imagine the funny looks 'Weege'll get from Tails when he's in his Fox ( Kitsune?) outfit from 3D Land. Oh, the hilarity!

@Mr_Mustache The problem with that new Mario game was that, to the naked eye, it practically looked exactly like the last couple Mario games. There wasn't anything exciting about it at all. The novelty, I'm sure, of a new retro Mario game has kind of worn off to a lot of people. It was the first Mario game to launch with a console since Mario 64, but what does that matter if people look at the game and don't see anything exciting about it? People didn't complain because we got a new Mario game. They complained because we got a new Mario game that didn't really offer much that was all that new.

@PogueSquadronWhat can they really do to spruce up (BESIDES AWESOME SUB-CON) New Super Mario Bros? Someone though "I got it; make it so you have to get A BILLION COINS," but missypissy didn't like it and that's enough for me. Surely they'll make another one, yes? What can we expect next time besides more of the same? I am kinda getting sick of the Koopa kids though, especially since they're pretty clone-y in my short term memory. They might actually have different gimmicks, but you still gotta stomp 3 times, know what I mean? I remember them being very different in Super Mario Bros. 3., more different than now. So (BESIDES SUB-CON), what can they do to reapply some freshness?

it can get more creative with its "story" like Mario & Luigi series does. I was about to say time travel but thats kinda been done already. Unless the was in the future, the koopa kids are grown ups and Mario and Luigi have hero sons and daughters and you have your 4 players to choose from. Nah they wouldn't do that. Maybe have Wario and Waluigi as the villains?

@Wellsy529That's actually a really good idea. Not only would it change the overall impetus of the game (going up against Wario/Waluigi instead of same-old, same-old Bowser), but it more importantly could be an excuse to create whole new tile-set of environments to traverse. In essence giving the game's presentation and immersion a whole new fresh coat of paint.

I'm also imagining Wario and Waluigi using the power ups in the game for evil.

I don't know what to think of this right now, it could be cool but it doesn't really excite me. It looks like they are taking a lot of inspiration from Super Mario Galaxy to me.

@warerareSuper Mario Galaxy inspiration, no annoying sidekicks in sight, and no guitar masturbation with crap vocals. I think I might be game for this.

It -does- look kinda promising, and I've never been a big Sonic fan.

Mario Galaxy was the first thing that I thought of watching that too. It could be a fun game.

Looks very promising... We'll have to wait for hands on impression to know if it feels good though. I'm definitely interested. I'm still hoping Nintendo is providing feedback on development. Sure would be nice to have two high quality 3D platformers to look forward to. I'm perfectly fine with them stealing Galaxy design concepts. That is the new standard after all.

It reminds me of the old Sonic X demo. That's a good thing.

I love that they have the old 16-bit designs of the animals, environments and chopper fish in there, all crammed into this Super Mario Galaxy style world, with those six freaks, who look pretty nifty too. My hope is rising.

@Mr_Mustache If you want to spruce up New Super Mario Bros, you could always not call it New Super Mario Bros. to start. 1.) Beef up the graphics. Make it easy to read but still make it eye popping. Maybe even do a whole game that's sprite based, like Wario Land Shake It. Either way, NSMB just looks kind of generic. I get that they want to make the art look like their official art, but something about it just lacks personality to me. 2.) More set pieces. Bosses that amount to more than just "hit this guy three times on the head." The last bosses of NSMBW/U were awesome - let's have more of that kind of stuff. 3.) Less, if any, emphasis on multiplayer. Make it more of a single player experience like Super Mario World, and not restrict the level design. 4.) New music 5.) Online leaderboards for speed runs 6.) More powers that are fun to use. Something similar to the cape from Mario World. The powerups in the NSMB games haven't really done it for me 7.) DIfferent playable characters - let us play as Toad or Peach, with their strengths/weaknesses from SMB2. 8.) More freedom - let us have Yoshi throughout the whole game, or let us flick shells with our capes/tails. Let us throw stuff upwards. 9.) More secrets - put more stuff to find in each level, like secret exits or treasures. The Star Coins are a nice carrot, but they aren't terribly interesting. NSMBU had some more secret exit stuff, but it didn't feel as well thought out as Super Mario World. Basically, if you want to spruce up 2D Mario, I think that basically Donkey Kong Country Returns and Super Mario World need to have a baby.

Only concern about Lost Worlds is Dat Camera. There better not be too much of that "Sonic Runs Toward The Player" gameplay. At some point SEGA has to learn that lesson.

@kriswrightAgreed. It was cool having a killer whale breathing down your neck in Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast, but those ten seconds were pretty much all that trick was good for. I can tolerate an instance or two.

@kriswright "Sonic Runs Toward The Player"... gameplay? That's a charitable way to put it...though it's par for the course in a series that takes control out of the player's hands at every opportunity.

@nate38...I'd shout at you for that one if I wasn't aware you were a big-time Sonic fan. There are parts of Sonic games where it takes control from the player, sure. Those are no different, by the way, from those moments in Galaxy where they take control away from the player to whizz around space for a few seconds. They're "beauty shots" and a reward for playing the game, as far as I can tell. If the dynamic camera angles we're seeing here are just from automated sections like that, I'm ok with it. But there certainly have been Sonic games where you've had to run toward the camera and those sections have pretty much always been terrible. I just hope we're not seeing more of that, here.

@kriswrightI agree with your assessment. The difference is that Galaxy gave you, in a way, a heads-up as to when you were going to get control of Mario back. I never once lost a life because of one of those events. With Sonic (the 3D games, not the 2D games), some of those shots didn't give you much warning as to when they were ending. If you didn't know when to anticipate that, you'd lose a life easily. I remember strongly disliking Sonic Adventure at times because of that. Generations at least improved on that a little.

@ludist210You know, that'd be a pretty good study: When do the automatic sections of Sonic work and when do they not? I've never had a big problem with the "roller coaster" sections of the Sonic games I've played, because, you know, roller coasters are fun. But when I hear complaints, usually from Mario fans, that Sonic plays itself, I understand the argument. And when it doesn't work it can be frustrating. Crack that code and you could go work for Sonic Team.
