Press Release said:

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The next title in SEGA’s Sonic the Hedgehog franchise will be exclusive to Nintendo’s Wii U home console and Nintendo 3DS portable system. Nintendo Global President Satoru Iwata announced the details of a new partnership with SEGA during a new Nintendo Direct video announcement today. Sonic Lost World is a new action platforming game, and more information about it will be announced before the E3 2013 video game trade show begins on June 11.

The Nintendo Direct also announced Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games for Wii U, and revealed that additional SEGA Game Gear games would be coming to the Virtual Console service for Nintendo 3DS. Outside of SEGA news, Nintendo announced that select Wii U games featured at E3 2013 will soon be playable at participating Best Buy stores, the launch date for New Super Luigi U, new Pikmin 3 game details and additional information about a variety of previously announced Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games.

“The onetime rivalry between Mario and Sonic has grown into a friendship that has never been closer,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “These announcements in conjunction with SEGA demonstrate the commitment we have to bringing great games to the Wii U platform, and set the stage for our upcoming announcements at E3.”

What do you guys think?

@kriswright Thinking the Sonic Cycle has finally broken seems like... something that may soon have to be added to the Sonic Cycle.

I think this news is rather cool, actually. Many grumble that Sonic the franchise is a lost cause worth forgetting about, but I think there's always potential for it to regain some of its lost ground. I think it did so with Sonic Colors, a surprisingly fun game. It's actually the only 3D Sonic game I have enjoyed. Sonic games usually sell best on Nintendo systems, so this news really makes quite a bit of sense. I could do without the party games, but they have their place I suppose.

I cannot remember the last time Sega published a game that I cared about enough to buy. Anyway, it's good for Nintendo to have them supporting the Wii U.

3 actual Sonic games or 3 oddball games?

PS. I count anything that isn't a platformer an oddball game. If this is 3 crap games of little quality then the deal isn't shit. And one of then is already this Olympics game right?

I guess I didn't read the damn OP haha. Well that confirms at least one "real" Sonic game.

Also, this basically confirms playable Mario and Mario Kart at Best Buy, right? Please be true. It'd be all kinds of amazing if true.
And please come to Vancouver. I don't remember the last time a kiosk had so much potential. I mean, the Rayman one was awesome, and seeing King Kong and Kameo on 360 blew my MIND years ago, but even then, I don't think those topped playing Turok 2 at Toys R Us or even the almighty Mario 64 at Toys R Us.

I remember my little mind being blown right to hell. I even held the N64 controller wrong haha. Reached my thumb across the entire controller I reach the analog. Was too used to the SNES. Heh, can't believe I was so silly.

After playing Generations, I'm excited about this game. I wonder if Nintendo will have any creative input, because that could only help these games.

Would you say...there could be some NINTENDO MAGIC involved?

A little help from Nintendo would, indeed, be an amazing thing.

Generations was definitely on the right path... a pretty damn fun game for the $15 I paid for it. Never tried Colors, but I'm willing to now.

@chrisbg99 I think the reason they want to keep it the Olympics is because the brand recognition of the Olympics likely draws in a lot more sales. And if they licence the name of the Olympics, they have to include the regular Olympic events, as well. I mean sure, it'd be nice if it were all fantasy events, but I understand why they don't do that.

That's a funny word, exclusive...

Well, the Sonic games might stay exclusive. Or maybe there will be a shitty HD version that Nintendo doesn't get. Which is fine.

I still haven't picked up a Mario & Sonic Olympics game, but I'm ALWAYS tempted. The demos/rentals have been surprisingly fun.

Haha, how is the Wii U "obsolete?" Its not even a year old!

You know, if people are BITCHING about the Wii U library right now (which LAUNCHED with 23? games), what the hell are they going to say about those other consoles when they launch?

I hope you like Peter Jackson's King Kong 2013!

Guys, you dont understand.

The Wii U is my new home, it's the only console capable of enough blast processing to allow me to go the extra fast I need.

Then again, the thought that my series shouldn't be exclusive to one system IS pretty outrageous.

I dont think I've had even ONE game that has been exclusive in the past 20 years.

I have many fond memories of playing through Sonic 3 on the Super Nintendo, Sonic Adventure 2 on the Xbox and Sonic Colours on the PS2.

I'm sorry guys, you were right.

The Wii U is no place for my games.

Every one of my games shall be made for every single platform from here on out, no matter the loss of overall quality when porting to other systems.

Thank you my fans, you have opened my eye.

I've never played a Speedy the Porcupine video game, or any video game for that matter, but it seems a lot of people are upset about more of them coming out! My grandson's played all the Bluie games, and I guess he's played enough, because he's been complaining about 3 of them coming to that new-fangled Wii tablet doohickey. This old man thinks it'd be wise on Nintendo's part to cancel all three games and use the extra money to focus on reviving Matlock. That way we can stop focusing on these silly games and start complaining about those stinking hipsters! Take a bath!

Because I love Sonic, and i don't want sonic games to be released on a console with no 3rd party support in future. if Sega stops this partnership, maybe Bayonetta 2 can go multiplatform, too.

Welp, at least they're informed.

Probably something like, "Oh, so THAT'S what third-parties were doing!" Not that I care about third-parties. And I also think that people who say the launch lineup sucked are crazy. It had a variety of games of decent quality. And not too many stinkers, really.

I'm not sure how many games one needs at Launch. I always just got 2 or so, but I got a bunch more with Wii U (Mario, NintendoLand, ZombiU, Batman, Madden; cripes), and people were still bellyaching. You can only play one at a time, folks, haha.

Yeah, I already have a healthy Wii U backlog. Seriously.

And I still have some titles to pick up, like Tekken Tag 2.

Plus, Monster Hunter will ensure that the backlog only increases from here on out.

I thought the launch was good. It's the six months since then that's sucked the air out of the room.

Anecdotally I've noticed quite a few people say they'll get a Wii U for the exclusive Sonic games though. Every new game helps.

If Nintendo can build confidence with their E3 games reveal, hit a better price point and hire a marketting company that's worth a damn then there could be a radical shift in the U's fortunes by the holidays...

I wouldn't argue with that. But I have seen something of an internet consensus on the topic of the Wii U launch sucking. Or at least an internet quorum.

Regarding marketing, it almost seemed to me that Nintendo intentionally held off on marketing the Wii U until it had more games. I've seen absolutely no ads. Granted, I no longer watch television...
