Hey guys! It's time again for a brand new episode of the Negative World podcast. This time, NinSage tells you all about how he literally 'caught em' all" and DrFinkelstein gushes about Lego City: Undercover. Later, the Duck Tales remake announcement is discussed which leads into the whole "remake" phenomenon in general.
Another stellar podcast! Congrats on catching them all, NinSage! When X and Y come out, I'll give those Pokemen another chance. And I love the impressions of Lego City. Don't have it yet, though. I did just download the 3DS game (the $30 price point made it more of an impulse purchase) and I like eventually upgrading to the console version rather than the other way around.
As for remakes, I usually dig them. The Resident Evil Remake on GameCube really is the gold standard when it comes to this kind of thing, but I also really like cleaned up versions of the games you loved, a la Ocarina 3DS. Sometimes, though, remakes only push me back to the originals on the systems they were made for. More than anything, part of me likes using the controller the game was designed for in the first place.
Let me know how the 3DS version turns out! I was a skeptic but as I saw more of it post-recording, I was thinking it wasn't going to be so bad. I wont get it because I'm done with that world for now, but I hope it's a good game. You can tell me.
I think the reason why the backgrounds are 3D in DuckTales Remastered is because it's cheaper to do, and this is a $15 downloadable game. Wario Land could afford going with hand drawn backgrounds because it was a) backed by Nintendo and b) a $50 title.
With a couple hours in, there is plenty off fog, characters pop in all over, and it is piss easy. Right now, I'm mostly critical patching the game and I'm not really sure how much I can just do what I want. All that said, I'm thoroughly enjoying my time so far. It is such a relaxing, pleasant and charming experience. I haven't seen many cool references like those that seem to be peppered through the big game, but there is plenty of humor, especially in cut scenes. What you see looks fine, you just never see much of the city at all. I really do look forward to the better looking Wii U game. Until then, though, I'll spend plenty of hours with this game.
Congrats on catching them all Joe! That's quite an accomplishment that few of us would dream of achieving. That's some Pokemon dedication right there!
I still haven't played Black/ White Version 2. The Pokemon fan inside me also really wants to check out Pokemon Conquest.
Lego City on Wii U sounds awesome (of course, I already knew this from all the positive buzz on the forums as well). I look forward to having more free time one day and being able to buy and play it!
It was interesting to hear Stephen's reluctance to fully embrace DuckTales Remastered based on what's been shown so far. I'm excited for the remake, but in all honesty I'm the kind of guy who will simply wait for the final product and not spend too much time analyzing preview videos to look for flaws. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with doing that though, and perhaps being a big DuckTales fan results in greater scrutiny because you are so passionate about the original and have your own notions of an ideal remake. Which, as you guys discussed at length, is a reason it's difficult to appease all fans whenever a remake is made. Also, Stephen made it clear he's not totally down on the remake; he's just not fond of the art style being used, particularly the 2D and 3D mish-mash.
I actually haven't played much of the original NES game. I think I played it one day at a friend's house when I was a kid, and that was it. It really impressed me though.
Speaking of remakes, I knew this sounded familiar, and yep, remakes were a topic of discussion in episode 12 (almost 2 years ago!). But it's ok to revisit the topic; Stephen and Joe weren't on that episode.
I'm cool with remakes, especially for bringing back a game that had a great concept but didn't get much recognition at the time. I've played quite a few great games that can be considered remakes, and they definitely have their place in the industry, as long as they don't impede developers significantly from creating original content.
You're absolutely right about me being so passionate about the Ducktales game. It is one of my favorite NES titles of all time. That episode was definitely about judging the book by it's cover and of course more could be done in the coming months that could change my opinion. I'm nothing if not open-minded.
Both Ducktales games are great. You really should play them if you ever get a chance, and while I'm not convinced on the art style here, if it ends up being the only way you're able to play Ducktales, and the gameplay is spot on, then by all means I can't wait for you to play it.
And yeah, the whole thing kinda evolved into a remakes discussion from the news, but I too think it's fair. The topic hasn't really been touched upon in two years, but a lot has happened in two years in the gaming space, and Joe and I have never had that discussion. I enjoyed it and I hope everyone else did too.
I appreciate you listening and for always having such lengthy impressions/comments. It means the world to us to see fans like everyone in this thread who comment to us. Thanks! We're recording tomorrow, so keep an ear out for the next episode soon!
LIstened last night while doing some WOODS in Monster Hunter, and it was a pretty entertaining listen.
Your banter about the worst Pokemon (AND BOTH OF YOU KNOWING ANY OF THEM) was pretty funny, though it probably shouldn't have been. The only equivalent I can think of is if I was rattling off NASCAR Pit Crew members by name and job per team. Hmm.
Finkmonger is a big LEGO fan, I can tell. I'm enjoying the game, too, and its unfortunate that what is said about the game ISN'T enough. You should really PLAY it yourself to get the full picture. Nutty!
Towards the end of the podcast, I got up to get a bowl of cereal, and came back to hear that I'd be the Kramer-type character. What did I miss?! POOP!
Also, Nikki is NUTS about that Candy Crush game. I asked her which level she was on: 147.
