On the Nintendo Direct, Reggie just announced a sequel to Link to the Past. Amazing. Will post new details as they arrive.

A New Game in The Legend of Zelda Series: Nintendo developers are working on a new game set in the world of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, which launched for Super NES in 1992. The game makes use of the 3D abilities of Nintendo 3DS, and allows Link to become a drawing and move along walls. A 3D video of the new game is now available to download in the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS. The game is scheduled to launch this holiday season.

From Polygon:

Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, says the 3DS sequel will "reinvigorate the flat 2D world of A Link to the Past with a sense of height and volume" by utilizing the stereoscopic 3D capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS. The game, which does not have a final title in North America, will feature "an original storyline and all new dungeons."

Update: Nintendo confirmed to Polygon that the new Zelda game set in the world of A Link to the Past is being developed by series producer Eiji Aonuma and his team at Nintendo EAD.

@Shadowlink You can't though, because the secrets aren't the same. There were big islands you had to scale to get to the top, pirate hideouts you had to clear out enemies, blah blah blah.

As opposed to, over and over, blowing up rocks to find holes with nothing in them.

@Zero

Big islands?

There were like three big islands in the game. The rest were tiny. They may have had giant billboards on them: 'SECRET HIDDEN HERE'

And there are just as many mook hideouts in the other games- Go back and play those games again. It's nothing like you're describing.

I guarantee you that there are more secrets to find through exploration with actual gameplay connected to them in Wind Waker (and Twilight Princess / Skyward Sword for that matter) than there are in Ocarina of Time. Not sure about Majora's Mask, I forget what it was like in that game.

I think I liked the overworld in Twilight Princess the most out of all the 3D games, oddly enough... disliked all the big empty horse riding space, but it did a fairly good job cleverly hiding heart pieces. Making you come back after you have a certain item and such.

"Majora's Mask" has tons of sidequests too, but they're mostly related to characters and less on exploration. "Wind Waker" and the original Zelda are at the top of the "I want to see what's there" trend in Zelda games.

If only the dungeons had been less linear and the sailing a bit more fun, it'd have been the perfect Zelda games (not to mention the art style).

Wind Waker felt way more. Sure technically you could just find the one island... but I'd often just start sailing without looking at the map and see where it brought me to. And when you found something, it was often substantial! Unlike OOT where 90% of the secrets were "bomb this huge rock that is in the middle of a field and obviously going to lead to a hole that has nothing in it".
This

Plus this

...As opposed to landing on this tiny island in the middle of the ocean that has nothing good on it

I can do this all day guys

Reasoning given.

I don't remember any Wind Waker islands that didn't have anything on them. I mean, some just had money, but by the time I was getting those charts translated by that extortionist Tingle, I needed all the rupees I could find. I think the big difference was that I didn't really have to hunt down a place to discover things; I knew every island had something to find. In Link to the Past, I'd go screens and screens without knowing if I should take a fine-toothed comb to the area, missing things, and spending time running into every. single. tree. For nothing but a couple rupees and the occasional bee. I also thought it was a bit weird how there weren't many enemies in the open areas of OOT, and it felt mostly empty. I bombed so many rocks unnecessarily.

@VickiL

That's exactly my point, it made it that much more rewarding when you found something. With the islands, Wind Waker basically telegraphs the locations, there's no thrill of discovery.

“This new title will feature lots of things that are new to the series; right at the start of the game, there’s a big surprise that will shock players. We started out with the new play mechanics, such as Link being able to become a painting and walk along the walls, and then figured out from there how to build a story around them. Rather than forcing elements of the original story into this one, we’ve instead focused on bringing back the characters, so you can see what happened to them after the events of the first game.”

What's that word for when a game takes place after the events of the first game again?

“Part of what made A Link To The Past interesting was the way you could move between the Light World and the Dark World and solve puzzles, and we’re planning to bring that back in A Link To The Past 2 for sure. Link’s ability to become a painting will be related to that

I wonder who the "Big Bad" will be for this game. Since Ganon is supposed to have been vanquished in the SNES game.

The word you are looking for is remake.

The new game (A Link To The Past 2) will play very differently to the original. I think the new additions will make players see the game in a different way. And, of course, we'll introduce even more unexpected elements in the Zelda game that we're making for Wii U.

He better not Aonuma up LTTP2 with things like sidekicks, hand-holding, and excessive story and dialogue. The whole reason I am excited about it is because I miss old Zelda games... the games that came out before he had anything to do with the series. In fact, I'd be more comfortable if Aonuma had nothing to do with LTTP2 at all.

@Hinph

A Link To The Past 2's gonna get Aonuma'd. Count on it.

Also, Aonuma'd is a verb now.

What about Fi returning?

*Dark World music starts playing*

*Fi interrupts gameplay*

"There is a 90% chance that this is the Dark World."

You guys are scaring me... Let's hope that he tries to make a faithful sequel to the game that he claims is his favorite of all time. We've got that in common!
