On the Nintendo Direct, Reggie just announced a sequel to Link to the Past. Amazing. Will post new details as they arrive.

A New Game in The Legend of Zelda Series: Nintendo developers are working on a new game set in the world of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, which launched for Super NES in 1992. The game makes use of the 3D abilities of Nintendo 3DS, and allows Link to become a drawing and move along walls. A 3D video of the new game is now available to download in the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS. The game is scheduled to launch this holiday season.

From Polygon:

Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, says the 3DS sequel will "reinvigorate the flat 2D world of A Link to the Past with a sense of height and volume" by utilizing the stereoscopic 3D capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS. The game, which does not have a final title in North America, will feature "an original storyline and all new dungeons."

Update: Nintendo confirmed to Polygon that the new Zelda game set in the world of A Link to the Past is being developed by series producer Eiji Aonuma and his team at Nintendo EAD.

@TonIttou You bought a 3DS, sold it to get a Vita, then sold that to get a Wii U? Wow.

I know, I know!

My Wii U is very dear to me, though!

I did briefly own a silver 3DS XL but my pushchair broke and forced a replacement with money I didn't have.

@TonIttou

You should probably sell your Wii U and buy a 3DS now.

Thanks Grant! (I recognise you from D1P btw)

Nah, I'll be keeping my Wii U, Windwaker, Rayman and Arkham Origins are coming to it this year!

I'll just save for the 3DS this time!

I am a little disappointed with the art style. On the one hand it is a faithful rendering of A Link to the Past in 3D but something about it didn't carry over. If it were up to me the sequel would look something more like a Street Fighter 2 HD remix type update to the graphics rather than the NSMB style of making 3D models and presenting them in a largely 2D environment. Of course the shifting in to walls ability sort of makes that idea impossible but I have my suspicions about that mechanic as a whole.

Regardless, it looks like it will be a good game. Hopefully this one turns out well unlike the past couple portable Zelda games.

@Zero

Halo 4 maybe.

Oh I meant the entire series of games. Is less than one handheld Zelda game.

@Zero

Ha not likely. Halo 2 even managed to out-train Spirit tracks by having a multiplayer map with a train on it that would run down inattentive Spartans.

I didn't like any of the Halo games or Spirit Tracks! Yay me!

@Stephen Eh. The train element was actually one of the weaker / non-essential parts of Spirit Tracks. I feel like they pushed that so much as the unique element that people missed the major element that was new AND fun (the tag-team puzzle solving with Zelda's-spirit-stuck-in-armor...) And the puzzles were just plain done well, some of the best in the Zelda series, period.

Not that all of the train stuff was bad or anything, it just wasn't particularly inspired.

Hmm. That's debatable. ST left a bad taste in my mouth. Although I supposed if you cut the stupid songs out, it's a decent game.

Phantom Hourglass>Halo.

NOW We're talking.

I found both Legend of Zelda games on DS to be excellent adventures. To the surprise of absolutely NO ONE.

Anyway, can't wait to check out this new game. I hope it's better than A Link To The Past - it's pretty easily my least favorite of the franchise. At the very least, it should be more of a "Zelda" game than the last game we saw (Skyward Sword) which pretty nearly removed the element that makes "Zelda" what it is. And that element is, my friends, called exploration.

Spirit Tracks was rather linear to begin with too, but at least if you did side missions, new areas of the map would open up and allow you to go off on your own a little bit. Skyward Sword had you stuck in four areas for the entire game.

The last Zelda portable game I enjoyed was Minish Cap. I HATED THE OCEAN KING TEMPLE!!! I'm sure most of you can figure out why. And I never wanted to play Spirit tracks since I thought I heard it was the same kind of stuff.

Nope. Can't.

Every complaint I've seen about that temple has been seriously flawed.

Spirit Tracks had an issue for an entirely different reason though.

-I'm not a fan of being timed... it has had its place in previous Zelda games but not this much or to this extent
- Having to SNEAK around WHILE being timed, must have drove me bonkers at least a couple times
- Playing the same temple over and over and over and over again. Especially when I got through a part I found difficult or annoying then would have to do it AGAIN. I know that it got easier when you got new items....but I just feel like that ruined the whole game for me. The rest of the game wasn't too bad though although I got far in it I definitely didn't want to finish it. I'm playing Zelda for Zelda gameplay...not for speed running or stealth.

Pretty good analysis video...

@Wellsy529

That's just it though, it didn't just get easier as you got new items, it made it so you didn't HAVE to do stuff over and over again. There really shouldn't have been much repeating of that temple at all, unless you were going for a speed record.

And the timer stopped in the safe zones, giving you time to plan your next move. It really wasn't the big deal everyone makes it out to be IMO.

eh whatever....I don't imagine myself ever going back to play it. Maybe I'd give Spirit Tracks a shot

Love the video they're seeing a lot of similarities I've been noticing. But yes some parts I think they're looking too deeply into it.

Yeah, enemy placements and whether or not the tree being back indicates that it is a prequel... looking into it much too deeply.

I wasn't into either of the DS games. I couldn't be happier to see them going back to oldschool style Zelda with this handheld iteration, though. I seriously haven't been this excited to play something since... Super Mario Galaxy 2? I will probably care less about Zelda U when it is announced, unless it also brings back some classic elements.
