On the Nintendo Direct, Reggie just announced a sequel to Link to the Past. Amazing. Will post new details as they arrive.

A New Game in The Legend of Zelda Series: Nintendo developers are working on a new game set in the world of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, which launched for Super NES in 1992. The game makes use of the 3D abilities of Nintendo 3DS, and allows Link to become a drawing and move along walls. A 3D video of the new game is now available to download in the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS. The game is scheduled to launch this holiday season.

From Polygon:

Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, says the 3DS sequel will "reinvigorate the flat 2D world of A Link to the Past with a sense of height and volume" by utilizing the stereoscopic 3D capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS. The game, which does not have a final title in North America, will feature "an original storyline and all new dungeons."

Update: Nintendo confirmed to Polygon that the new Zelda game set in the world of A Link to the Past is being developed by series producer Eiji Aonuma and his team at Nintendo EAD.

Oh that music! I love how it gets quieter when you become "Hieroglyph Link".

Since I'm the one who said it was minor you might as well have directed this at me. None of the 3d in any game is required for anything on the 3DS. If it was required, they wouldn't let you turn it off. The 3d might be amazing, but any of these titles could be played without the 3d on the Wii U eshop.

I think this is something that could help sell Wii U systems. Hell, they could take it further and make a game free if you own it already and let you swap saves via sd card. I still want console vc games on the 3DS as well.
If they really wanted to, they could make people pay for the "3DS emulation" even if it wouldn't actually be that

Same boss fight??

@r_hjort Mmmm, that's exactly what I wanted to see. Looks AMAZING.

But what struck me most, oddly enough, is how awesome those weird flat clouds looked spinning around the tower as Link scaled the outside.

Reggie Fils Aime said:
While this game is set in the world of A Link To The Past, it features an original storyline and entirely new dungeons.

This quote from Reggie in the Nintendo Direct, paired with the proof of the same boss in this thread, I really hope some magical way that this game CONTAINS the original Link To The Past done in this style with the new game... or at least, it seems it might have us revisit dungeons while playing all new ones for the story-based ones. Ah who knows.

Time will tell.

This game does look awesome..I can't wait to play it..

Hearing that classic dungeon music from A Link to the Past... it's one of my favourite themes ever. I agree, it's amazing.

I also like how Link as a drawing is the same art style as the prologue drawings in Wind Waker.

Edit: At Dr. Fink: I was thinking the same thing - a remastered original Liink to the Past would be a huge bonus

That's probably too much to ask for... a lot of work. It would really be something, though!

@DrFinkelstein
That boss fight is part of a totally new dungeon though.

That would be cool however!

@DrFinkelstein I think what this will probably be is something more similar to Final Fantasy IV:The After Years or possibly Pokemon Black 2. Same world basically, but with new content, new story, new things to discover.

Basically, maybe someone is trying to revive Ganon a few years after LttP. We see how the world has changed for good or better, and set off on a new adventure.

Can't wait. I feel like this is what Four Swords Adventures should've looked like. This would be awesome with four players.

The question for me is whether I should replay A Link to the Past before this or not. Been about ten years since I last played the game.

So Reggie says totally new dungeons and new story. Unless the overworld is exactly the same with the same secrets, same dungeon locations, and same progression then that's a sequel, no way around it.

@DrFinkelstein

The same boss is at the end of a level that is completely different from the LttP level, so it doesn't really provide evidence for your hope (although that would be cool).

I'm thinking it will be like Kanto in Pokemon Gold and Silver.

@Jargon

I have no memory of how that particular dungeon lays out and I know there was some multi-level gameplay. For all I knew it was the same but different. It's likely merely a homage then.
