New Pokemon - Mewtwo-esque Pokemon (A New Form CONFIRMED)
News reported by

Nintendo announced today, via their official Pokemon youtube channel as well as their website, a brand new Pokemon to be featured in the upcoming Pokemon X and Y games. The Pokemon has a strong resemblance to the classic Mewtwo, but with a head that is much more elongated. Perhaps this is a brand new Pokemon with a whole separate line, or perhaps it is an evolution of Mewtwo. The latter would be rather fascinating to take such a prominent Pokemon and give it an evolution.

Perhaps this also means that Team Rocket is back and these upcoming games could play into the originals story-wise. Little more is known, but the video itself is exciting enough.

October cannot come soon enough for Pokemon fans, no?

Pokemon.com's Description

Edit: Nintendojo reports that some Japanese publication indeed confirms it's another form of Mewtwo. Not an evolution. Not another Pokemon. It's the lamest possible answer. I think he looks cool, but meh...

Ahh genetics! I hadn't made the connection between X/Y and chromosomes. assuming that's intentional

It's confirmed to be a new form of our little Pokemon #150.

I'll get over it eventually, but like I said in my last post, that really is my least favorite of the three possible options.

Why is it that no one likes forms...?

Sooo it's a Familiar Pokemon with a New Look.

Eh, I'll take the regular Mewtwo over that. Mewtwo is awesome.

Why does it have a handle on its head btw?

@GameDadGrant - I like some forms, but some just seem unnecessary or poorly designed.

For example, I think Giratina's alternate form looks awesome, even if I don't understand its purpose. And I understand why Rotom's alternate forms exist; it makes sense that an electric ghost might possess other electrical objects. However, this new form of Mewtwo's doesn't really make sense to me right now (especially when a Mewthree would make more sense), doesn't look particularly good to me (seriously, I saw a picture where the new form's head tail had been Photoshopped so that it was now in the place an actual tail would be, and I thought it looked so much better), and it's just so overdone at this point, especially when the form adds nothing to the stats or elemental typing. (And maybe this one will affect the stats in some way, but it looks like it isn't affecting Mewtwo's typing at all.)

Some forms are just stupid to me. For example, look at the new forms for the three genies or whatever they are from Black and White.

Transforming three human-like creatures into three beasts (at least one of which still retains far too much of its humanoid nature) just seems like poor design to me, even if it does grant them new abilities and minor stat alterations.

But I also think Gamefreak has just gotten a little too form-crazy. There's really no need at all for Keldeo to get a new form just because he learned a new move, for example.

The new Pokemon game is about genetics.
Mewtwo is the genetic Pokemon.
Reason right there,

@Pokefreak911 - That's not a good reason though. Deoxys is the DNA Pokemon. Ditto and Mew are literally able to alter their genes on the fly. Mewtwo just doesn't live up to those if the reason was "we're doing genetics, so let's give Mewtwo a new form before these other Pokemon that have closer ties to genetics". The species tags don't really mean a whole lot anyway. Mew's species is supposedly "New Species", but it hasn't been new since Red and Blue.

Why would a clone that has completely escaped and evaded all humans since its creation (excepting potentially Red) suddenly get a new form? It's extremely unlikely that its genetic code was programmed to suddenly mutate at some point later in its life, and if it was, and such a mutation is permanent, then that's an evolution, not a form. The only other way we've ever seen a form being acquired is through the use of an item, which would require Mewtwo leaving the Cerulean Cave, which, as of everything we know right now, he should have no reason to do.

@V_s
So you are saying there is no reason, when the game he is going to be in and the movie he is going to be in haven't even been released.

@V_s

But he has left the Cerulean Cave. He sure as heck isn't there in Gold and Silver...

@Pokefreak911 - Right. As of right now, based on everything we know so far, there is no reason. That doesn't mean that we can't get a reason for it eventually, but to say there's a good reason right now just doesn't make sense.

@Shadowlink - Hm. It's been a long time since I've played those games. Were you even able to get to Cerulean Cave in those games? (According to Bulbapedia, Mewtwo IS in Cerulean Cave in HeartGold and SoulSilver...)

Mewtwo isn't in Cerulean Cave, he's in my master ball.

@V_s

Hmm. I was remembering original Gold/Silver where instead of Mewtwo, you could find the Berserk Gene item in that spot. But apparently he was catchable in the remakes.

I agree with the Dr. I honestly don't care much for multiple forms in general in Pokemon, a MewThree would've been much better. I personally didn't want an evolution, just a new clone of Mew or something. An evolution would've also been fine, though weird considering MewTwo is a legendary. Aside from Manaphy I don't recall Legendaries evolving. What we got is cool, but eh.
