Some interesting news for all you DuckTales fans out there...

OpRainfall said:
Ducktales Remastered was announced by Capcom today at PAX. It’s being developed by WayForward, all the sprites will be hand-drawn and strewn about a 3D world, Disney’s authentic voice-actors will all lend a hand in making this game everything it can be, and the game’s original 8-bit songs are going to be remastered by WayForward’s Jake Kaufman.

Also interesting to note is that the game will feature authentic Disney voice acting...so get ready to hear some new dialogue from Launchpad, Huey, Duey, Luey, and Uncle Scrooge himself.

Headed to XBLA, PSN, and Wii U eShop this summer for $15. Capcom's Ray Jiminez says "It will play just like you remember."

Let's all hope we see a trailer as PAX progresses!!!

Still fairly amazed this is actually happening.

@GameDadGrant

The terrible part is those screens DO look amazing. And then you see it in motion and it falls apart with the flat, flat 2D sprites on the super-hit-you-over-the-head 3D backgrounds. 3D backgrounds could work alright, I suppose, if they didn't hit you over the head with them! In screens - beautiful, in video - awful.

And seriously, does anyone want to defend those garbage gem models? Because at least we can agree on those, they are abysmal when you set them next to Scrooge. They look like first-time-iPhone-game assets.

The 3D backgrounds would work a lot better if they didn't scroll so much. They move far too much for how far Scrooge is moving so it looks like a cheesy 3D movie effect instead of a believable backdrop. That's my only problem with them. ...Not really gonna bother me too much, though. I never bought much stock in the "OLD GAMES LOOKED LIKE CRAP SO YOU USED YOUR IMAGINATION!" train any more than any other silly claims.

@-JKR-

You think the gems don't look...like gems? Or something? I mean, yeah, they aren't...detailed or anything, but do you really WANT them to be? This is DuckTales, not Uncharted - the assets are gonna look cartoony.

I'm just more annoyed that those are the only collectables they showed. I mean yeah, there were a lot of gems in the original game, but I seem to remember Scrooge picking up stuff like ice cream cones, cakes and...crowns, I think? Man, it's been a long time since I've played that game!

@GameDadGrant
I played it right after this announcement hyped me up! He picks up gems mostly, but also cakes, ice cream cones, Scrooge 1Up dolls, and the treasures from each level.

Also, I played it on EASY difficulty, after being thwarted on NORMAL. What's happened to meeeeeeeeeee?!

What the...!

You play NES every day, but you don't bother with SwapNote? WTF.

Do you have Castlevania III? That's my favorite NES game ever.

I just hope it doesn't become another TMNT: Reshelled.

@GameDadGrant
As for Castlevania, I only have Castlevania 2 for NES. Blah!

I love Castlevania 3 though, so I will get it someday.

Swapnote... grumble...

I'm actually with JKR. It half looks fantastic, half looks meh. I agree it should just be fully 2D.

Remaking an NES game is seriously commendable, and for that alone this is really cool. But I do wish just a tiny bit more effort was put forward. And by that I mean more than they already have, not that they haven't at all haha.

I kinda wish it was sprite based though.

Hey! Hey! Quit being glass-half-empty people! If you need me to tell you that then we're in bizarro world! Imagine if the backgrounds were beautiful and 2D and Scrooge was some lame half-assed 3D model running around!

@GameDadGrant

There is at least one ice cream in the trailer for the new one, so fear not. Look at marker 1:05, it only appears for about 2 frames before a cut.

And regarding the gems (and other assets that totally look out of place next to Sprite Scrooge) it is not their complexity/non-complexity I am taking offense to, but the STYLE. It does not even a tiny bit fit next to Scrooge.

Did you ever see Initial D? It's some older anime with a horrific art style (but ignore that, that isn't my point) where they put early 3D in along with the normal anime 2D. The end result is a vomit-enducing mess.

Those two things do not belong in the same universe. They are night and day different. Same goes for Scrooge and those gems/chests/backgrounds. They do not belong together.

That said, you CAN combine both 3D and 2D with lovely, style-concious results. Just look at Futurama.

Some times it sticks out a bit, but for the most part things blend wonderfully. Because the style matches.

Same goes for the original Ducktales game. The world is cohesive. Scrooge fits perfectly with his 8-bit self next to his 8-bit chests and gems. (Now obviously this is because in those days you had no choice, but the point remains.)

Anyway, my qualm is with the lack of attention to cohesive style choices with this remastered version. I can tell you with no doubt in my mind the gem assets were not handled by a skilled artist given the opportunity to succeed at making it blend with the sprites. They were not. And Capcom KNOWS they will make a killing from releasing this, so they could absolutely put in that effort. They have the funds, artists, and time to do so. They chose not to. And that is frustrating to me. The lack of effort is monstrously frustrating.

Are there bigger injustices in the world? You bet. Daily thousands of kids are dying for lack of 50 cent medicine or mosquito nets. In the long run, this is meaningless and silly. We all have our passions, though, and one of mine is 2D animation. When I see stuff like this, silly as it is, it makes my blood boil.

Sweet review! I think I'd give it about the same score as you did, too. I was lucky enough to get the game as a Christmas present as a kid, and even though there were cooler 16-bit games around -- as you point out -- I had an absolute blast with DT2, just like I had with the first game. Since the games didn't have a way of saving high-scores I made my own high-score table with markers and Disney stickers, and pinned it to my wall next to the TV. Good times. I think those high-scores are still crammed inside the DT2 box. Maybe I should check that out and try to beat my high scores, twenty years later.

So I was worried about the intrusive cutscenes in the Duck Tales demo, and then I read this, and wtf how could WayForward miss the mark by this much? No one cares why there are rats on the moon, don't stop the game to a grinding halt to explain it. Also, it's because it's made of cheese, morons.

There's a demo?

I'm not against cut scenes in this game, in theory. I mean, it's DuckTales. It was a cartoon to begin with. And the NES version is out there already if people are worried the scenes are gonna cramp their flow.
