Nothing about Cult County says it couldn't be Dementium 3. Did you play Dementium 2? There's a scene very similar to the CC demo except you're in a remote snowy landscape with creepy derelict buildings instead of a remote sandy landscape.

That's what I mean though, I like the whole Texas-ish vibe more.

I understand wanting to have an FPS on 3DS but to me, a good game is a good game. Either it's fun and worthy of playing on any system or it's not. I don't see anything about the trailer that would make it interesting on 3DS but not on PC. At the same time, the concept could turn out cool, no matter what system it's on.

As an example, Amnesia:The Dark Descent could surely run on 3DS and it would be cool if it could, but the fact that it's not very technically impressive hasn't stopped it from being a hit on PC.

3DS added under the minimum funding goal.

Howdy Cultists!!

We have a little treat for the Nintendo handheld fans out there.

NINTENDO 3DS IS IN THE HOUSE!

You spoke. We listened. You want Nintendo 3DS as an option for Cult County? You got it!

We sent the call out on twitter, and we got a tremendous response. 248 retweets and 47 favorites later we hear you loud and clear.

If the minimum funded goal of $580,000 is reached, you will be able to choose the Nintendo 3DS as your platform of choice for your download code.

WANT EXTRA COPIES?

Some Cultists have asked us if they can somehow add extra copies of the game to their pledge!

Absolutely! Once you've selected your reward tier, you will see a text field where you can enter your total pledge amount. For each additional download code, please add $20 to your pledge amount. Additional copies can be for any available platform of your choice.

Thank you for your amazing support! Please continue to spread the word of Cult County. We have an uphill battle to reach our goal, but miracles can happen! :)

I wish they'd done a better job of pitching the game. I know their pedigree but I can't really tell what they're shooting for with this and I think that's what's hurting them.

Take for instance this game with a much more modest fundraising target, outpacing Cult County. It has a really clear video explaining what's unique about it, what the goals are, there's gameplay footage. Kickstarter is an amazing platform but you have to do a better job than this of pitching your idea...

A good game is a good game, yeah, but putting it on a system that's already oversaturated with first person games? It'll get buried in their respective stores, might not make back the initial investment...it's a risk. It needs to be different, and nothing about Cult County screams that it will be different enough to stand out right now.

In terms of sales, you definitely have a point, but I just meant for my personal interest in the game. If it comes out on both PC and 3DS now, the 3DS version won't be more appealing to me just because it fills a void on the platform.

I pledged just now, but funding doesn't look like it is going so hot, eh?

I pledged some cash now that the 3DS version has been added (re-added?). But yeah, this KickStarter isn't going to succeed.

It's interesting that the 3DS was added to the list of platforms, but the KickStarter goal wasn't increased at all. Does it cost zero dollars for them to make the 3DS version...?

If I had to guess, I'd say they realized their core fanbase comprised mostly 3DS users, and that they wouldn't stand a shot of reaching their goal without that fanbase. So I see this as sort of a last-ditch effort to hit that goal--580,000 and being over-budget would apparently be better than not hitting the goal at all for them.

@TriforceBun

Yeah, it's certainly a last-ditch effort.

Kind of makes me upset/confused as to why Renegade Kid even went to Unity and KickStarter for this game. I mean, they started off saying that the project went "beyond what the 3DS could offer" or something like that...but now suddenly the game CAN be done on 3DS. It's like...wha...? Renegade Kid, what are you even doing?!?

They must've known, somehow, deep down, that their fanbase was on Nintendo's handheld. That's how their company became what it is. Why move away from them? Especially after announcing this game? I'll admit I was disappointed (and maybe even a little bitter) that the 3DS was losing a very cool-looking exclusive. But I wasn't really upset that the game would be available on other platforms - I was upset that it was suddenly NOT going to be on 3DS. Being offered something cool and then having it taken away...kinda hurt. I guess? But that "pain" was lessened due to the developer saying they wanted to make the best game they could, and moving it off of 3DS was how they could achieve that...so whatever, right? That's a good thing...yeah, go ahead. Make a better game. I can still end up playing it on Wii U, so...cool.

But now it seems there was never a reason to NOT do a 3DS version. It's just baffling how this all came to be. Maybe hindsight is 20/20 (or maybe it's easier for me to say what a company should or shouldn't do when I'm over here on my couch and not in a board room with them) but I'm thinking it would've been smarter for Renegade Kid to release the 3DS version of Cult County like originally intended, THEN port it to Unity and the other platforms. Then they could have the benefits of the revenue of the 3DS game, plus the (likely) critical acclaim that came with it...win/win, right?

But no, first they had to piss off their fanbase, then they had to create an over-priced KickStarter, and now that campaign isn't going to work out for them, even after crawling back to and pandering to that same fanbase that they likely squandered any good faith with. Bah. Just...so confusing. Though I do wish them the best, since I do want to play this game. I just wish they handled this better.

Anyway, I'm rambling now. Enough.

Adding 3DS support at this point is too little too late. This Kickstarter was ill-planned and way too ambitious. They should have asked for something humble like $50,000 to help finish the 3DS game they had already announced, and then added a $100,000 stretch goal for a Wii U version. They could have ported it to PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Vita later. Or just started making Cult County 2 for the 3DS. What's wrong with developing for eShop first? Seemed to work out fine for Mutant Mudds and Steamworld Dig.

Completely agreed.

I agree. The asking price was a bit steep, and stripping the 3DS out of the equation entirely was a head-scratcher. I'm not sure Renegade Kid knows where they want the project to go, honestly.

I'm guessing they like the Unity engine, and the potential to release their game on as many platforms as possible was very appealing.

But this just wasn't the right move - @deathly_hallows is absolutely right, they should cater to their fanbase first, then port to other systems as needed/wanted. It worked for them with Mutant Mudds, after all. I'm kind of surprised they would deviate from that plan after seeing how well it worked the first time.

I'm curious how they'll handle Cult County going forward now.

My best guess is that they'll have to scale the game back down to its original concept, release it as an eShop title, then if it's successful, work on implementing more ideas into a follow-up title that may or may not have its own Kickstarter..

@TriforceBun

Renegade Kid did say that the game would still come out as planned in the KickStarter, it would just take a longer time to come out. Whether or not that includes the 3DS version is up in the air...though I would hope it's still planned to come out. They obviously know people want the game on Nintendo's handheld.

I'm guessing sales of MOON Chronicles will play a factor on Cult County's release as well.

Clearly their Kickstarter was overly ambitious (and their pitch not very effective), but its likely failure doesn't mean that things would have been different if it was a 3DS exclusive. A small developer doing an ambitious project has got to limit overhead and maximize revenue streams, which made the choice to use Unity completely logical.

@GameDadGrant

They know 248 people want it on 3DS (want it enough to click a button at least). Not exactly compelling evidence that a 3DS version would be financially successful.

@Jargon

That's funny. Someone on Twitter mentioned that they had 162 (or so) retweets earlier to Jools (before the 3DS update on Kickstarter) and he said there had to be many more retweets before they considered it...apparently, less than 100 = many more.
