Jools is setting the standard! I'd go as far as saying Dementium 2 is in the top 5 as far as technical prowess on the DS. Gotta appreciate superb efforts from what truly has the feel of a garage developer.

The graphics in the little demo they had at the booth were great. Sadly, there was no gameplay. Just a boarded up church and a barn. You could enter neither, and there were no enemies. But the sandstorm effect and the textures looked great, the 3D looked great, and it was very smooth.

Yeah I'm really happy to just know this game exists, but I wonder why they demoed it so early if they don't even have at least part of a playable level completed. I mean are they planning to kickstart this thing?

Anyway, how did they have it set up for the demo, stylus aim or CPP?

They just wanted to show up the engine they've come up with to the media, so they whipped up a quick demo. It wasn't something playable at their booth, Jools was just handing it to the media for them to check out.

They were showing it on a regular 3DS with the CPP.

True true. I'm just worried some people might walk away with a negative opinion if there's nothing to shoot or at least smack with your monkey wrench. But I'm sure Renegade Kid fans are pretty savvy and forgiving in that way.

I'm glad they're supporting the CPP, it seems like it's the small, nimble devs like RK and Shin'en who are willing to support the thing even though Nintendo seemingly sent it out to die. I still have pipe dreams of Metroid Prime Hunters 2 or something of that nature but each day a little part of me dies deep inside and my hope wanes.

I've just edited my post: it wasn't really a demo for people to play. Only Mutant Mudds Deluxe and ATV Wild Ride were playable at the booth by everyone. Jools just trusts that the media understands the Cult County demo was a technical one, a proof of concept.

Cult County is no longer a 3DS project. Instead, Renegade Kid hopes to hit Steam, Wii U, Xbox One, PS4/PS3 and Vita.

Kickstarter here.

Weird.

Too early to say if they shot themselves in the foot, but it would have been nice promoting it as the FIRST fps on the 3DS, right?

Did you hear that? I think it was the sound of GameDadGrant screaming...because of the lack of 3DS support (at this point in time).

Yeah, I honestly don't know what to think about this. I really like Dementium and Moon, but to me part of their appeal was the dedication and ambition that went into handheld FPS games, and how Renegade Kid worked with the technical limitations to make something special for the DS crowd. I'm sure they could've done wonders with the 3DS as well, but can their small team really pull this off with all the extra detail that comes with HD console designs and so on? Not just on a technical level, but in terms of art and the rest of the presentation. The FPS starved 3DS audience would probably have welcomed Cult County with open arms too, if everything had gone as planned. Plus, even though I really, really like the thinking behind the project, I'm unsure if the team can deliver something capable of scaring me. The DS games' writing and pacing weren't exactly on level with the better horror games out there as far as I'm concerned.

On the other hand, I'm glad the Wii U is getting more love, I like Renegade Kid, and I like the ideas, so I'm still looking forward to this. Just not sure how much.

Well, I can tell you for a fact that I'm far less interested in this game, today. I would have embraced it on 3DS, but on Wii U I can't get excited about this. At least with off-TV play it's similar to a handheld experience, but I wanted some 3DS-specific features like stylus aiming, and 3D.

@anon_mastermind
Yeah, those old 3D screens were pretty cool from what I remember. Seeing it streamlined for a handful of platforms is definitely less interesting than seeing it utilize one single platform's strengths. If they'd promise us some creative GamePad use I'd be dancing (quite poorly), but that's not really a reasonable thing to expect.

@anon_mastermind Did they shoot themselves in the foot? They're bound to make more on their investment by releasing it on so many platforms, aren't they?

@PogueSquadron

Honest question: is Renegade Kid a big enough deal to request nearly 600k on Kickstarter and hope to break even on the project? The majority of their games are on Nintendo handhelds (the only two to appear on non-Nintendo handhelds are Mutant Mudds (multiple platforms) and Dimentium II (Windows)), and they completely alienated that fanbase when they announced this Kickstarter.

Dedicated fanbase with zero competition and small investment versus unknown status with hefty competition and large investment. You tell me.

I'm a bit concerned about this game now. $600K isn't a terribly HUGE amount of money to ask for...but what if the goal isn't met? Does that mean the game never gets made...not even the original 3DS version?

Geez, I have no idea why Renegade Kid did this. Why not just make the 3DS version like they originally planned (since the game was already using their engine, and had probably around a year's development time sunk into it already, and not had to do a Kickstarter for it) and do a multi-plat Kickstarter for MOON CHRONICLES instead?

I mean sure, MOON will be fun on 3DS, but...I mean, fans of that game that own a 3DS? THEY ALREADY FREAKIN' OWN OR PLAYED MOON. Why not port out the upgraded DS game to a bunch of platforms that never had a sniff of the game, and keep the new IP on 3DS? With far less hassle?

I'm so baffled by this turn of events. Like @Zero said, this is weird. @anon_mastermind makes a great point, too. Renegade Kid likely shot themselves in the foot with this move, if not the face.

@GameDadGrant
I saw a quote floating around on GoNintendo saying they would make the game even if the goal isn't met, but that it would take them much longer to do. Either way, it seems the 3DS version is taking the backseat.
