Something must have gone sour between Nintendo and Ubisoft. Not even a timed exclusive, that's a massive delay.

UBISOFT®'S RAYMAN LEGENDS NOW COMING TO XBOX 360® AND PLAYSTATION 3®

London, UK - February 7th, 2013 - Today, Ubisoft announced that its forthcoming title Rayman Legends, already announced for the Wii UTM system from Nintendo, will also be released on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system. All versions will now hit shelves in early September 2013.

The Microsoft Xbox 360® and Sony PlayStation® 3 versions of Rayman Legends are being developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, the same team behind the Nintendo Wii UTM game. Rayman Legends has been praised for its stunning visuals and innovative gameplay by media around the world and labeled as one of the most anticipated platformers of 2013.

"We heard from many Xbox & Playstation owners and Rayman fans who told us they really wanted to play Rayman Legends on their current system", says Geoffroy Sardin, EMEA Chief Marketing & Sales Officer. "We decided to give the fans what they wanted while at the same time broadening the audience exposed to this innovative and memorable game."

Rayman Legends retains the fantasy appeal of its predecessor while adding a multitude of clever and entertaining gaming modes, new characters, new environments and a new soundtrack. The award-winning team of artists, designers and composers from Origins has also returned with an advanced UbiArt engine to include multi-dimension gameplay elements, an improved lighting system and updated game rendering that elevate Rayman's graphics to the next level.

Nintendo will be fine. They did okay with the Nintendo 64 and survived the GameCube era, so I don't doubt Mr. Iwata and the heads at NCL (and NoA) will figure out how to help the Wii U grow. It's got a lot of potential. Indie developers will prove that.

If anything, I think Nintendo has shown recently that they may be willing to do some heavy lifting to elevate the indie developers. Nintendo might realize how screwed up the current system is in regards to 3rd parties, and they might be harvesting a fresh batch of devs and ideas.

EDIT- The Facebook page is over 1000 posts, with about 98% of them negative.

This flared up old familiar fanboy tones in me (ones I don't like) so I'm going to sit with them for just a moment and say "Screw you, Ubisoft" and then move on. I have to say, this was a total douchebag move on their part, and I know they'll get away with it, but it still ticks me off because of old emotional attachments. The fact that they came out and lied about the reason (we hurt PS3 fans feelings? Uh huh. Yeah okay) just adds another level of insult. Not to mention that the actual delay might be Microsoft's fault apparently.

This is pretty bogus. I have no real valid reason to be mad, but I'm only human and I spent too many years as a Nintendo fanboy not to be pissed on some level. Nothing much I can do except not run my own company that way, I suppose.

This is perfect proof that there has been a complete fucking meltdown between Nintendo and third parties. There is no way Nintendo did not know about this. There is no way Nintendo does NOT do their third party Nintendo Direxct any day now. Ill be completely honest, Nintendo is getting fucked hard right now. The gaming media is trashing them, third parties are making excuses to NOT develop for them, and they are getting torn apart by other fanboys for their graphical and system capabilities. I love my Wii U, but it is honestly impossible to recommend anyone to buy it until at least November, but will anyone care at that point?

Nintendo is getting boned hard by the industry and I've no idea who is to blame anymore... Is there a conspiracy? Is it just all a coincidence? Is this solely Nintendos fault? Dark times are ahead this month.

Nintendo NEEDS to make a PR move ASAP before ps4 is announced in two weeks.
I completely agree with this post, I think Nintendo is really in trouble, Wii had left a bad taste in 3rd parties mouths because it was too weak to play the same games as the other systems so they couldn't easily leverage their properties across all platforms, but instead of fixing the problem this generation they did the exact same thing and released a "next-gen" console that is actually a generation behind in graphical horsepower... so in that sense I'm not surprised publishers are wary to support the system.

Like others have said, this news indeed feels like a kick in the gut, Nintendo seems to have lost EA but for some reason I thought Ubisoft would always have their back, they seemed truly excited about Wii U and behind it 100% with Zombi U and Rayman, but now it seems like they've had a loss of faith.

I think E3 will be very interesting, if there are a lot of 3rd party Wii U announcements then maybe it's not as bad as it seems, but if all the talk is about the PS4 and the next Xbox... then yeah... I hope Nintendo has a plan to fix this.

Response from Ubisoft about the outcry.

Thanks for all your feedback regarding Rayman Legends in all of its forms. We have heard you and we will continue to listen. We understand your frustration and that you want to get your hands on the game.

We are working with the development team to provide you with a new, exclusive demo for the Wii U soon. Stay tuned for more.

@-JKR-

Welcome back!

But if that were the case.... they should have released the Wii U version THEN announced the other platforms and that rule would have applied because the ps3 version would have come out the same day as the 360 version.

@shinriley Wow, an exclusive demo, releasing when the game should be releasing. I'M SO EXCITED.

A demo? Ubisoft screwed this up. They should have just released the game, it would have sold well. In the Fall they could have released a "deluxe" version for the PS/Xbox platforms and included some extra content, sold it for $40, and made a little extra from those who are Rayman fans but didn't have a Wii U. I don't get it.

Could it be that Nintendo just doesn't really care about third parties? How many people are going to stop buying Nintendo games and hardware even if there's no third party support whatsoever? How about the average person on the street? The only system selling third party game for Wii was Just Dance as far as I can tell and I don't see them in any position to lose those kind of games. Nintendo is not going to change their hardware design strategy just to appease these companies that have shown themselves to be fickle time and time again.

If they have anything to fear it's that their first party stuff won't be enough to make the necessary sales to support the company. Wii U might not be Wii, but it doesn't have to be. It can be Gamecube and Nintendo will continue to roll along. 3DS doesn't have to be DS, it can be GBA (although it's looking like it might match DS after all).

If you are holding out on buying a Wii U until there's amazing third party support, it's probably just time to move on.

and the fact that they used Nintendo like a cheap whore and Nintendo gave them the exclusive spot for demo units..... hopefully Nintendo has changed them already. I would like to hear their comments on this as well but maybe they figure they're better off not saying anthing so maybe they'll get their other games

@Jargon
I know there a lot of gamers out there who buy Nintendo consoles and are only interested in specific 1st Party games, but I can guarantee you Nintendo wants the revenue that comes from robust 3rd party sells, not just in licensing fees but in consoles and peripherals sold. Nintendo definitely cares.

Nintendo should just.....buy them out haha

I'm sure they care to an extent but it's pretty clear it's not a priority in their strategic planning like cheaper internal hardware is. They're always going to pay lip service to third parties and make a token effort, but they're going on 4 generations now without a strong third party presence and they're doing just fine.

Plenty. It's a myth that "only Nintendo games sell on Nintendo systems". They're the biggest sellers, sure, but in the end they make up something like 25-30% of the overall game sales on Nintendo platforms. You can't just throw away 2/3 to 3/4 of what is selling on your platforms and expect everyone to stick around.

And it seems like Nintendo has been reaching out to 3rd parties a lot more lately.

@Zero

Look at this list of the top-selling N64 games. Sure there's a few third party games on there down the list, but I don't think people would have no longer bought the system if they weren't there. And Nintendo offers so much more content on its own now than it did on N64, with more games, downloadables, Virtual Console, non-gaming services like Netflix. I think there'd still be plenty of sales and Nintendo could continue to operate.

But if you disagree, there's no point to continue arguing because it was by design an extreme example. There's no real chance of Nintendo losing third party support altogether. Instead it illustrates that Nintendo really isn't going to bend over backwards and create the possibility of losing money on console sales or shelving ideas like the Gamepad just because third parties want parity between consoles.

Well if the story about Microsoft's rules is the true reason, I hope pissing off the Nintendo fans that were excited about the game is worth the 25,000 or so copies they'll probably sell on the 360.

Some people are pointing to this as the reason for the delay.

Below is an excerpt from Microsoft's Content Submission and Release Policy, which reveals how it deals with third-party publishers and their titles.

"Titles for Xbox 360 must ship at least simultaneously with other video game platform, and must have at least feature and content parity on-disc with the other video game platform versions in all regions where the title is available," it states. "If these conditions are not met, Microsoft reserves the right to not allow the content to be released on Xbox 360."

Still, would Microsoft really say no to a major Ubisoft game? I mean, does Microsoft really enforce this in any strict manner?

@Jargon The N64 is precisely the console where Nintendo lost a massive amount of marketshare to the competition. Massive. I'm not sure that this is the best example.
