Something must have gone sour between Nintendo and Ubisoft. Not even a timed exclusive, that's a massive delay.

UBISOFT®'S RAYMAN LEGENDS NOW COMING TO XBOX 360® AND PLAYSTATION 3®

London, UK - February 7th, 2013 - Today, Ubisoft announced that its forthcoming title Rayman Legends, already announced for the Wii UTM system from Nintendo, will also be released on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system. All versions will now hit shelves in early September 2013.

The Microsoft Xbox 360® and Sony PlayStation® 3 versions of Rayman Legends are being developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, the same team behind the Nintendo Wii UTM game. Rayman Legends has been praised for its stunning visuals and innovative gameplay by media around the world and labeled as one of the most anticipated platformers of 2013.

"We heard from many Xbox & Playstation owners and Rayman fans who told us they really wanted to play Rayman Legends on their current system", says Geoffroy Sardin, EMEA Chief Marketing & Sales Officer. "We decided to give the fans what they wanted while at the same time broadening the audience exposed to this innovative and memorable game."

Rayman Legends retains the fantasy appeal of its predecessor while adding a multitude of clever and entertaining gaming modes, new characters, new environments and a new soundtrack. The award-winning team of artists, designers and composers from Origins has also returned with an advanced UbiArt engine to include multi-dimension gameplay elements, an improved lighting system and updated game rendering that elevate Rayman's graphics to the next level.

The devs don't seem to be too thrilled by the news.

And what we can take away from this is that YES, the game was essentially finished.

@Guillaume
Can you sum up what is in that neogaf thread. I'm at school and it's blocked.

@Pokefreak911

Translation of a post made by a member of the dev team:

Ubisoft employee said:
I completely understand you but you have to understand one thing. This is not a decission taken by the development team, this comes from really really high up, so please don't pick on the game.

If you're pissed, imagine how we feel. Think on the situation, we've been making overtime with this game practically since May preparing E3, and then almost a demo per month (gamescon, Wii U presentation, shops, eShop, etc...) and at the same time trying to actually finish the game. We had a first delay because it was obvious we couldn't finish on time but we gave it all to be there on February. What face do you think we had when the week we had to close the game we're being told it's not going to be released? I couldn't believe it.

For practical matters, you'll have to wait for some months for the game to be released and will most likely serve for more content to be added and do it better. For us, this means we've spent 6 months barely seeing our wifes, kids, and friends for nothing because, after all, such a haste wasn't needed. Believe it, it was a hell to swallow these news.

Even then I'm firm in what I said back in the day, Rayman Legends is an excellent game and will still be, and the team that's making it doesn't deserve to have your back turned on them just because some men in ties one day took a wrong choice. This industry is really that shitty

Thanks BigG

And this further rebuffs the fact that developers have no control anymore in the game industry. I am sorry but game publishers need to go, they are ruining this industry and everything good about it they are sucking out. Take EA and Activision for example. They would rather sell the same game over and over with no innovation ( although Activision is more innovative than EA, take Skylanders for example).

@Renjaku

Neat vid. The crazy thing is that I posted my pic 4 hours ago, and the vid only goes to 2 hours...so there's at least TWICE as many Miiverse messages about the delay as seen on that video (and really, much more since mine was hardly the first Rayman-related message). This whole thing seems like a PR nightmare, and I really hope Ubi opens their eyes.

@Guillaume

I knew it! It's aggravating because the game itself is shaping up to be excellent, and I know the devs are putting their all into it. But the suits sure are making the company as a whole hard to like.

Sucks to be them. There are about 600 posts on Ubi's facebook page (mine is one of them), and about 500 of them are for cancelled pre-orders. That's just one outlet.

This is really taking on the feel of a watershed moment. Rayman might prove to be the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back, and he is mad as hell and not gonna take it any more! I sincerely doubt they expected this kind of backlash.

Ubisoft will have to release Rayman Legends earlier now, they will lost way too much money if they don't.

@TheBigG753 Who said this? I would think speaking out publicly like that would be a no-no.

Anonymous poster on a forum who is (supposedly) a Ubi employee. I guess enough people know him/her to be legit.

oh I figured the developers wouldn't make such a dumb decision it'd be some suit that doesn't even understand how hard they've worked

Here was my post on Facebook, since it's clear this is the publisher's fault:

Lewis B. said:
How dare your higher-ups make such a bone-headed decision? Nintendo put one demo on all launch Wii U store units: Rayman Legends. Nintendo could have demoed the system with New Super Mario Bros. U or Nintendo Land, and in hindsight, maybe they should have.

Going multi-console is fine. I don't think the majority of people complaining here are sore about that. Rayman Legends getting in more people's hands is great, but pulling the rug out from under your fans who were highly anticipating Rayman Legends on Wii U (which is a finished product, not something that still needs to be completed) so that the ports could be completed and launch alongside it is absurd. Did you wait for the Wii U version of Assassin's Creed 3 to be completed before launching the 360 and PS3 versions? Because I'm pretty sure you didn't.

Not to mention I was planning to buy this as a late birthday present for myself (my birthday is February 10). Now I'll pick it up after New Year's once the price inevitably drops to $20 or $30. Better yet, I'll pick it up used so you don't get any of my money.

Ubisoft pledge 'pipeline of quality games' coming to Wii U, says Nintendo will make 'necessary' Wii U changes

"We have a pipeline of games of very high quality coming on that machine, like Rayman Legends, which makes fantastic use of what the machine can do. (Nintendo) will make the necessary changes to the machine to make sure that it continues to grow fast on the market." - Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot

This game is going to die in September next to GTA. Aside from shafting the Wii U, they're killing it with that release date.

It's as we feared: Ubisoft confirms the game is finished and is only delayed to release with the PS3/360 versions.

This is the stupidest publisher-related move I've seen in a very, very long time. Maybe ever? It's not even a kooky experiment like the Virtual Boy or anything--it's just a horrible decision with no upside and tons of bad PR. Awful.

I wonder if there is any way that they would reconsider the release date. Probably not, but this backlash is pretty huge and they have to be seeing it. You know that you just slit your wrist, do you sit there and watch it bleed out?

In fact they're already releasing PR to try to explain it.

@TriforceBun

That's the thing that's most annoying out of all of this. I really couldn't care less about what system it comes out on. If it was coming out as a PS3 exclusive in 2 weeks, I'd get it for PS3. That's what's so maddening about it -- it's a game that I really wanted to be playing in 2 weeks, and is a game that I could be playing in 2 weeks because it's done, but instead it's being delayed. Not to make the game better, but to also release the game on a bunch of other systems I already own!

I'm still going to get the game at some point for some system, because I know it'll be great, but like hell I'm going to run out and buy it on day 1. Honestly, if I only owned a Wii U and had been looking forward to this game, I'd certainly remember this the next time a Ubisoft game came around. That's really such a terrible way to treat one segment of your market. It'd be one thing if they didn't come out and say the game was done, but to handle it the way they did...it's just really bad.
