The Last Story becomes XSEED's most successful title to date

It seems that Project Rainfall may have justified itself yet again! Executive Vice President Ken Berry revealed that the RPG "has become our most successful title to date." XSEED declined to offer specific sales numbers. I'm not entirely sure what "most successful" means, but hopefully it will open up a good relationship between Nintendo and XSEED and perhaps lead to more future collaborations.

The Last Story is also getting a reprint, and price drop to $29.99.

That's really awesome for them! And I may bite at $30.

Nintendo, third party publishers, etc., take note.

I'm glad to see that the game did well.

That's amazing! Really glad. Couldn't have happened to a nicer game.

Awesome. At least its easier to find than Xenoblade, which was the better game, imo. Both were amazing though.

Supposedly it's around 50,000, and if that's the most copies an XSEED game has ever sold... then wow. No wonder their stuff can be hard to find. I kind of wish I had waited now so I could get the game cheaper.

@TheBigG753 Take note of what? That the game didn't sell very much as Nintendo predicted?

@Mop it up Where did you get the 50k number from?! I know XSEED is far from a big publisher but it would be a little surprising if that is the most that they have ever sold. Either way, it sounds like they sold out their shipments and are producing more, so it did better than Nintendo / XSEED expected.

I still think that this game could have been pretty big if Nintendo themselves had gotten behind it and stressed the "exclusive from the father of Final Fantasy" part.

@Zero The 50k is supposedly from a leaked NPD statement, so it isn't confirmed, hence why I wrote "supposedly." And to be fair, "most successful" is vague enough to mean anything, it doesn't necessarily mean it sold more copies than any other XSEED game. It could mean other things, like maybe the first run sold out faster than their other games. Or maybe it received higher review scores. We really don't know.

I don't think 50,000 is better than Nintendo expected, in fact that's probably exactly what they expected. If they had localized it (meaning not using the Europe localisation) and had a little marketing for it, 50k would not have been profitable for Nintendo. Now, I'm not defending Nintendo, I think they should be releasing both niché games and the big hits. But from a business perspective, I can understand why they were hesitant to release these two games.

@Mop it up But if Nintendo had released it, it would have sold more, I guarantee it. Whatever the case I think it is definitely more than expected, because publishers don't like relying on reprinting games, there is an additional cost involved to opening up production again. With smaller titles they try to just nail the production first try and let it end where it ends, which is why a lot of games like this end up hard to find, because they never end up justifying another production round. But this one has, so there must still be a high enough demand.

@Zero The fact that it almost didn't get released here is better marketing than anything Nintendo could have cooked up, so I don't think it would have automatically sold better with Nintendo's name on it. I know the only reason I bought it right away was for that reason. There's no way to know for sure of course. I agree that it's more than XSEED expected, but as a publisher of niché titles their expectations were very low.

Hmm... should have bought the old version with that art book when I had the chance! Damn!

I don't think I quite agree with that. Operation Rainfall certainly helped, but Nintendo could have taken that momentum and done so much more with this title. Instead they let it slip out quietly through a publisher who certainly couldn't afford to market it big, a half a year after it released in Europe.

I actually saw two of those at a local store the other day. Just sitting on the shelf. I almost bought 'em. Not sure what for...maybe sell one for a profit, and maybe keep the other as a collector's item. I dunno.

Either way, this is good news for XSeed. Whatever "successful" means for them, I'm inclined to think this is a positive thing for the company.

Why isn't this more common in video game marketing in general? Hollywood has been using this tactic to increase popularity of films forever.

If we swap more games, I'll send you mine, now that it's just an empty shell without the game (which I traded in)

Now that you all bought Last Story keep supporting XSEED and buy another amazing gem of theirs: Fragile Dreams!

Gameplay is bad, but the story is absolutely everything this trailer teases and more, I promise you.

@deathly_hallows

Anand certainly has one in mint condition, sealed. Talk to him.

@GelatinousEncore

I'm glad you prefaced that 'gameplay is bad.' Well put, sir.
That said, I was engrossed by the story and captured by the atmosphere. It was..very offputting and lonely (by design).
Could've done without the ASS backtracking though.

(And if you're wondering, that isn't an anagram, its just ASS in CAPS.)

@GelatinousEncore This isn't the first XSEED game I've bought, Rune Factory Frontier and Little King's Story are some of my faves on the Wii. I haven't bought Fragile but it's on my list of games to check out.

That's great news!

It's a wonderful game and I'm proud to have it in my collection - artbook and all

I've bought a few other XSEED games, like Little King's Story, and Fragile Dreams, but I ended up not caring for them. I want to get The Last Story, but haven't gotten around to it. I'm glad it's sold well though, even despite my not following through on buying it I'll totally pick up the reprint when it comes out at least, because $30 is much more attractive than $50.
