Metroid-style platformer, The Cave, is making its way to the Wii U eShop, according to developer Double Fine Productions.
The confirmation came from a representative for the title, telling Joystiq the news during a demonstration of the game at PAX Prime.
The Cave is directed by Ron Gilbert, the mind behind Maniac Mansion and The Curse of Monkey Island. It is scheduled for release in early 2013.
This marks Double Fine Productions first title on Nintendo hardware. They previously released games like Psychonauts and Brutal Legend on other systems.
Hmm, game oozes atmosphere and charm, but it doesn't look very Metroidy, there doesn't seem to be very much action or precision platforming. Maybe it's more about exploring and story?
For anyone interested, here is an episode of Up at Noon with Greg Miller where he interviews Ron Gilbert about this game. Turns out it's not a Metroid style game, it's a pure adventure game that just happens to be in 2-D. Looks super cool though. (the Ron Gilbert section begins around 10:20, the first half of the show is a mildly entertaining gameshow about Die Hard, ha)
Uh oh, Sega released a press release confirming the XBLA, PSN and Steam releases for next week, and saying the Wii U release date "will be announced soon". http://www.gonintendo.com/?mode=viewstory&id=194268
I hope Ron Gilbert is right, but the 22nd is a Tuesday...
I've heard various reports stating it's online, and a few that say otherwise. So which is it?
After how amazing Trine 2 was, (especially online with bro) I am really hoping this game delivers a similarly great experience. Some of the character designs are wack though (and IMO the same can pretty much be said about Trine).
I got this game yesterday on several twitter recommendations. I was in the mood for a good puzzler and this seemed like the perfect match. I never played a double fine game before and the last "adventure" games i played were the Strong Bad ones on wiiware (i do not count the walking dead).
I played through to the first puzzle where you actually enter "The Cave." I picked the Knight, the Monk, and the Hillbilly. The introductory puzzle made the game seem like it is going to be tough, but I welcome the challenge. I will play more tonight...
... I wish it had off-screen play though.... I am not really sure why it doesn't. The gamepad screen is not used in any manor and i cannot use the pro controller....
I liked the game more and more as I played more of it. Actually, my second playthrough was more fun than the first, which is surprising because the game does ask you to repeat some puzzles you've solved before. I think that could have been handled better than it is.
@Guillaume hmm. can the game be played with just one person or do you need to make a party? Also, without spoiling anything, should i be walking around with a post card like i have been?!?
