PORTABLE 3D ENTERTAINMENT GOES EXTRA-LARGE WITH NEW NINTENDO 3DS XL

Larger Version of Nintendo 3DS System Launches Alongside New Super Mario Bros. 2 on Aug. 19

REDMOND, Wash., June 22, 2012 – A big year for the Nintendo 3DS system is about to get even bigger. In a Nintendo Direct video on June 21, Nintendo revealed plans to launch Nintendo 3DS XL, a new version of Nintendo 3DS with 90 percent larger screens. When it becomes available across North America on Aug. 19 at a suggested retail price of $199.99, the new system will create even more immersive entertainment experiences for users, delivering a wealth of games and video content that can be enjoyed on the go.

Nintendo 3DS XL features an updated form factor and will be available in Red or Blue. The new system's battery life outperforms that of the original Nintendo 3DS, and it comes bundled with a 4 GB SD card, which owners can use to store content such as downloadable games and videos from the Nintendo eShop. Nintendo 3DS XL launches on Aug. 19, the same day as New Super Mario Bros. 2, a new installment in the fan-favorite Mario game series.

"No other hand-held entertainment experience compares to the fun of Nintendo 3DS," said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. "With the launch of Nintendo 3DS XL on Aug. 19, consumers will be able to enjoy the great lineup of current and upcoming games on an even grander scale. Plus, Nintendo 3DS XL gives owners even more real estate on their screens to enjoy entertainment applications like Nintendo Video and Netflix."

I'm pretty sure the 3D technology is the same. It just works better by virtue of the screen being bigger.

All I want to know is, why would Nintendo release only a blue or red version here in NA? Seriously!? Europe is getting a silver model, not sure about other parts of the world.

But how in the hell did Nintendo come up with the idea that either Blue or Red XL would sell the best in NA? Those colors sucks ass. And from most of the posts I have read across many forums, people in NA are not happy with those colors. How hard would it have been to give NA a silver version or even a black version of the 3DS XL.

Everytime there has been a poll on which color do people want, 90% of the time the black version wins! Seriously, I think Nintendo does this shit on purpose. They know people want a XL version of the 3DS, so they give us the shitty colors first, knowing people will still buy one. Then, mark my words, come holiday time this year, I guarantee here in NA, Nintendo will offer up more colors, like the silver one and a black one.

So, I guess I will just have to wait even longer for the XL. I don't want a fucking blue or red one. Plus, since I plan on keeping my Zelda edition 3DS, I guess I can wait until holiday time. Of course by then I will not give a shit, cause the Wii U will be released and then I will probably hardly ever even touch my handheld 3DS, esp while at home.

I went to gamestop today on my way to work and put $60 down on a Red 3DS XL so that I'm guaranteed a system. Can't wait! They asked if I wanted to reserve NSMB2 and I said no, I was going digital with it. The clerk looked so sad...

I seriously doubt that the clerk gave a shit about how you plan on purchasing your NSMB2 game.

Myself, I will never buy any games digitally, cause my sons always are borrowing my games or some games I end up selling later on. When you buy digitally, you are stuck with that sucker until the end of time, plus no one else can ever play it, unless you let them borrow your handheld.

I'm not saying you guys shouldn't feel the way that you feel, but honestly I don't really care about the color of my system. I'll play on anything.

...except maybe not puke color.

@gamewizard65 When you work at a place like that you have quotas for presales and your job basically depends on making those quotas. I'm sure they care a bit.

@gamewizard65 the clerk was sad because their jobs depend on their ability to get people to preorder games. I don't mind digital handheld games. It's better suited for me. I will always buy physical console games, though,

Going digital seems way more worth it on a handheld than it is on a console. I love that on my 3DS I have access to ten NES games, ten GBA games, a number of GB/GBC games, and original eShop content at any time without having to lug 30+ cartridges around. Being able to include retail games in that is a fantastic idea. If I could have Picross DS, Tetris DS and a few other games on my system at all times, I would be thrilled. Being that consoles are stationary and I don't have to carry the discs around, that advantage isn't as big a deal.

I'll continue to buy retail games (I ordered NSMB2 from Newegg for $29.99 for instance), but there will definitely be some instances where buying digital is the way I'll go.

@gamewizard65

Being able to play your entire library without having to lug multiple game cartridges is definitely a plus for me. Download only (done well) certainly makes a hell of a lot more sense for handhelds.

@rebonack

It can still be very handy on a console though, especially since you're dealing with DVDs that can be easily scratched, or take longer to load (even if it's just a little bit of time). It's also handy for pick up and play arcade games. I had gotten Pac-Man Championship on a disc for $5 way back, and even though I played the hell out of it, I haven't touched it since getting the digital version of Pac Man Championship Edition DX.

I am being given £90 for my old Xbox360 and £105 for my 3DS which will leave me with enough money to trade in for a 3DSXL and to pickup NSMB2. This makes me happy.

Not only that the store have said that I can pay for the console but take a receipt away stating how much I can get for the trade, take the 3DS and XL home, do a system transfer and then claim the money. Now I have to pick a colour to preorder, blue is tempting. Silver seems a bit boring to me.

@warerare That's really awesome that they let you bring it home! I couldn't live with myself if I just got rid of the system and didn't give it to my girlfriend haha.

Go silver, you're lucky to have that colour available day one IMO.

Damn I have to import that forest-green DSi XL someday. Kicks the shit out of the lime-green DS Lite we got over here.

Well my Red XL is preordered and I can pick it up on the 28th July. Stay tuned for impressions and pics that day.

This design has grown on me. After accepting Nintend's lack of a second circle pad (I still think it is a bad idea) I really want to purchase this model. This redesign (yes, it is a redesign) seems to correct all of the complaints I had about the original. Well, except of course the second circle pad.

They could have just made a bigger 3DS, instead they rounded the edges, made home,start and select actual buttons and removed the annoying green indicator on the depth slider. The hinges even seem to be more solid this time, it even has a new resting position. They've also constructed the shell with a matte finish. Then there is of course the obvious bigger screen which significantly improves the 3D effect (although it still remains to be seen how much) and the longer battery life. This is what the original should have been, except smaller and perhaps with a second circle pad on it.

@Tranquilo
Don't forget the dpad is supposedly better, more like the DSi dpad. Will be wonderful for NSMB2!

...damn, now I want one.

Yeah what is selling me on this model is all the other improvements other than the bigger screen. And the screen itself is supposed to be higher quality as well.

So I tried to preorder it a few weeks ago and for some reason they said no. Oh and I think they mentioned something about no longer taking preorders for systems? Terrified me. I need my Wii U on launch day.

This might be a minor complaint but the 3DS (well, at least mine anyway) takes like 7 seconds to boot up after pressing the power button. Hopefully that has been fixed as well.

@WrathOfSamus777

I'd almost want one with all the improvements but keep the smaller screen The more I see of this system, the more I want it. But I should probably hold off for better colors..
