PORTABLE 3D ENTERTAINMENT GOES EXTRA-LARGE WITH NEW NINTENDO 3DS XL

Larger Version of Nintendo 3DS System Launches Alongside New Super Mario Bros. 2 on Aug. 19

REDMOND, Wash., June 22, 2012 – A big year for the Nintendo 3DS system is about to get even bigger. In a Nintendo Direct video on June 21, Nintendo revealed plans to launch Nintendo 3DS XL, a new version of Nintendo 3DS with 90 percent larger screens. When it becomes available across North America on Aug. 19 at a suggested retail price of $199.99, the new system will create even more immersive entertainment experiences for users, delivering a wealth of games and video content that can be enjoyed on the go.

Nintendo 3DS XL features an updated form factor and will be available in Red or Blue. The new system's battery life outperforms that of the original Nintendo 3DS, and it comes bundled with a 4 GB SD card, which owners can use to store content such as downloadable games and videos from the Nintendo eShop. Nintendo 3DS XL launches on Aug. 19, the same day as New Super Mario Bros. 2, a new installment in the fan-favorite Mario game series.

"No other hand-held entertainment experience compares to the fun of Nintendo 3DS," said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. "With the launch of Nintendo 3DS XL on Aug. 19, consumers will be able to enjoy the great lineup of current and upcoming games on an even grander scale. Plus, Nintendo 3DS XL gives owners even more real estate on their screens to enjoy entertainment applications like Nintendo Video and Netflix."

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

I can carry the DSi XL around. I can carry this.

@Guillaume, same here. That's why God invented cargo pants!

...Really?

I guess I'm too used to wear jeans tighter than usual (too lazy to buy new ones). So cellphones and handhelds feel bigger than usual when I'm wearing those types of cloth.

I say that because my 3DS already feels too big. I better get used to looser pants.

EDIT: Or maybe I should lose weight too.

@HammerLord

Don't worry, you're not alone. My jeans aren't tight either but I guess their pockets are just designed small. Nintendo should come out with a brand of clothing specifically designed to carry around their larger portables!

Cargo pants are a creation of the Devil.

@Renjaku

Seriously! Just put in a global leaderboard for each player's coin total. In five years there will be people with a BILLION coins!

Doesn't mean we have to like it.

This is what I was expecting to happen, though not quite when I expected it. After no sign of it at E3, I thought it'd be a while yet before it was revealed.

I may get one down the line sometime, being bigger would somewhat help my issues with handhelds. But it'd have to be in some sort of sale, and those colour options aren't attractive either.

@anon_mastermind

It's not required, but it is more productive. It's kind of like playing Wii Remote only in Smash. You can technically get it done, but it is very restrictive as some moves are automatic.

I hope, I pray that most games are playable with only one circle pad. Hopefully they control well without sacrificing 3D, because I shouldn't have to make that compromise. We can all agree that releasing it with only one circle pad was a bad idea.

I'm tired of this subject. I've already said my piece. Deuces.

@WrathOfSamus777 This isn't really a revision though. Revisions tend to change actual functionality in some form. This is just a bigger 3DS. With a better battery, I guess.

Would you consider the DS Lite a revision? Technically all that changed was the system's form factor and brighter screens, and I would absolutely call that a revision.

You will still be able to buy the first model of 3DS, the XL won't replace it. So it's an alternative.

They're still both hardware revisions that do little to change the actual functionality, that's all I'm saying. But yeah, the XL is clearly not a replacement (like the Game Boy Micro and the DSi XL).

@carlosrox

The Supreme Court has a name for that: dissenting opinion.

Actually, so does Tom Cruise: Minority Report.

On a different note- just plunked down 50.00 on this sucker. I'm not going to trade in a damn thing to get this beauty. Once I heard it will play DS games natively on roughly the same size screen as a DSi, it went from a maybe to a no-brainer. I've got so many DS games on backlog, the 3DS XL just became my baby.

@anon_mastermind

Look at that thing! It actually has more screen real estate then the DSi XL due to the widescreen aspect of the 3DS. GLORIOUS!I just wish it had better color selections...

@Deerock69

Like there won't be a special edition/new colors released within a year.

That's exactly why I'm holding off, I don't like the red and blue (and all black inside) colors. I mean, within 15 months the original 3DS has seen aqua blue, cosmo black, flame red, pink, purple, and the Zelda one. So I'm not too worried.

I really hope that white one comes over here.
