PORTABLE 3D ENTERTAINMENT GOES EXTRA-LARGE WITH NEW NINTENDO 3DS XL

Larger Version of Nintendo 3DS System Launches Alongside New Super Mario Bros. 2 on Aug. 19

REDMOND, Wash., June 22, 2012 – A big year for the Nintendo 3DS system is about to get even bigger. In a Nintendo Direct video on June 21, Nintendo revealed plans to launch Nintendo 3DS XL, a new version of Nintendo 3DS with 90 percent larger screens. When it becomes available across North America on Aug. 19 at a suggested retail price of $199.99, the new system will create even more immersive entertainment experiences for users, delivering a wealth of games and video content that can be enjoyed on the go.

Nintendo 3DS XL features an updated form factor and will be available in Red or Blue. The new system's battery life outperforms that of the original Nintendo 3DS, and it comes bundled with a 4 GB SD card, which owners can use to store content such as downloadable games and videos from the Nintendo eShop. Nintendo 3DS XL launches on Aug. 19, the same day as New Super Mario Bros. 2, a new installment in the fan-favorite Mario game series.

"No other hand-held entertainment experience compares to the fun of Nintendo 3DS," said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. "With the launch of Nintendo 3DS XL on Aug. 19, consumers will be able to enjoy the great lineup of current and upcoming games on an even grander scale. Plus, Nintendo 3DS XL gives owners even more real estate on their screens to enjoy entertainment applications like Nintendo Video and Netflix."

@Scrawnton Where is all of this shitty reasoning coming from? What about people who have never owned a 3DS before now? You can't just expect them to also have an older 3DS model that includes a second analog slider.

@Deerock69 "Buck up and admit we're flat wrong?" Really? I was wrong, yes, but I don't consider that a good thing, nor something to be ashamed about. Rather, I feel bad for Nintendo for designing the 3DS in such an asinine way, and neglecting to fix it when given the chance. The longer they wait to make the second analog stick and additional shoulder buttons part of the actual system, the less compelled developers are going to bring out games that make use of those extra forms of input. Thus, it'll limit what kinds of games you'll be able to see on the 3DS, for no particularly good reason.

Nintendo's gonna be stubborn and win anyways. Vita seems right fucked right now. Nintendo will look like they're right, just like they did with the Wii and its flaws.

@carlosrox

The 3DS was always likely to outsell the Vita for many reasons. Besides, Sony is its own worst enemy. Currently they are marketing the Vita as a Play Station 3 Portable or as a controller for the PS3. That approach is fine by me, but I don't think the vast majority of people who want to play games like Uncharted 3 (where presentation and visuals are so important) are going to buy the Vita. Releasing games like Sound Shapes and Sly Cooper on both Vita and PS3 doesn't help either. Sony is actively cannibalizing its own sales.

As an early adopter I was pissed to see it come out so soon. Dropping 250 on a system that decreased in price is significant enough... a brand new shiny bigger, better system in a year and a half. I wish they had some hardware upgrade options for ambassadors.

Yeah...I'm a bit pissed too.. This is the first time I've ever bought a Nintendo handheld on day 1 - I didn't think they would do an XL so soon.... I bought the DSLite and was quite content...I'll probably buy this when my 3DS is old and the XL is way down in price. I'm not prepared to buy this....or it's accessories anytime in the near future.

I'm really surprised by all the whining, moaning, ect about the 3DS XL not including a 2nd analog slider. Seriously, so far there isn't one game that requires it. One of the few games that is supposedly makes control better is RE Revelations. I have that game I have played the game and at no time did I ever think the game would play better with a 2nd slider. The control is perfect in this game as it is.

Seriously, why would anyone care about this when only a couple games take advantage of the second stick. I guess cause people like to moan and groan.

I will be buying this bad boy on day 1 and transfer all my games from my Zelda 3DS. I still plan on keeping my Zelda 3DS and I will also just keep all of my games on that system as well. Of course any new games I download will be downloaded to the new 3DS XL.

I knew the next 3DS revision would be a larger 3DS. I'm really glad Nintendo didn't sit on their asses and make us wait several years.

I think the idea is more that developers don't even bother with making games that would use dual analog, not that any current games really need it. And that this scares off Western developers since that is their primary (only?) way of making games.

So, this thread is mainly about the 3DSXL, but I thought it was worth mentioning:

Top right corner: Nintendo Network logo. If this game has fleshed-out leaderboards, I'm in. All the way. Sell me all the DLC you want.

@Zero

Yea, actually I was going to mention the western developer's taking advantage of the 2nd slider. Seriously though, how many games for the DS was from western developer's? Maybe more than I can think of, cause typically, I don't care about the types of games western developers brings to the market.

So yea, western developers can all go to hell, except for Retro Studios. But yea, the rest can make games for that non selling Vita piece of plastic. Ha,ha..Vita...I feel sorry for the fool who buy Sony's handhelds. Yea, I went there, and I feel good about it. F'ck Sony.

@gamewizard65 No need to be a dick and make fun of your fellow posters just because you don't like the Vita. I happen to love mine, does that make me a fool?

Doesn't seem like it, sadly. But it'll have downloadable Coin Rush levels. (I thought Coin Rush was supposed to be a random selection of three levels!)

@Anand the coin level style of the game is perfect for leaderboards. It probably won't happen but it will be very nice if it does happen!

I care about one leaderboard: who on NW gets to 1 million coins first.

@Scrawnton
Oh, I agree. Leaderboards would totally make a score-attack platformer. I just don't think that it's going to happen.

@deathly_hallows
I dunno, FPS games take longer to develop? Look at Resistance, it obviously needed more time in the oven. Stylus + left analog stick will make for some very well-controlled FPS games on the 3DS, you'll see.

@Tranquilo
Circle Pad Pro's are not that rare, are they? If you want one you can get it from Gamestop or Nintendo.com. Who says dual analogs are required for Monster Hunter anyways? I did use the CC for Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii, but I know many were able to enjoy it with the single-analog wiimote/nunchuck scheme.

Go away for a few days and crap like this happens! I recall mentioning before that I loved the idea of a 3DS XL, and here it is. My only problem is that I've been holding off on the Vita so I can get it as a gift, and now I have another gift option. Damn my first world problems! I don't mind the color options, but I am currently using the Zelda 3DS and really like it. I would prefer to wait for some other limited edition bundle, but doubt I will.

As for the second circle pad, I'm glad they didn't add it. Like it or not, it does splinter the user base. Nintendo heavily leverages being kid friendly, and many Nintendo games and products are bought as gifts by less informed relatives. Having multiple versions of the same system out with different capabilities and games that could only play on one or the other could only end badly.

History is written by the winners. Always has been, always will be.

I've learned to love my 3DS cradle, I will definitely buy a cradle, all gadgets should have cradles.

The whole "no charger" thing is silly. Does it really save them that much money? Nintendo is so damn stingy, it's like when they took the 480P support out of the GCN. I bet the real reason there is no 2nd nub is because it saved them $0.22 per unit in manufacturing. There's no "split the userbase" concern, just pure penny-pinching.

Nintendo is now including 4GB with the 3DS XL. How's that Vita included memory doing for you? :p

Now. when I think about it... How am I supposed to fit this sucker in my pocket to carry it around? The size of the thing is a bit contrary to the Streetpass functions, for how am I supposed to take it everywhere with me if I can't even carry it outside my bag?

I can understand that the purpose of this big fella is to play 3D games at their peak of luxury, but, in my opinion, handhelds shouldn't be that big.

10 years from now, we will be using a new Nintendo handheld with the size of a netbook. Oh, yeah.
