"After announcing Runner2 for XBLA & PSN, we got so much incredible hate mail from our Nintendo fan base that we had to release this game for Wii U under fear of death!" -@AlexNoisy

They also released an image of what appears to be the new retro challenges:
Neuse answered some questions over on the Runner2 blog:
Although where's the 4x4 retro font? That's just the standard 8-bit font on that retro challenge. And the Commander's sprite looks different from his usual pixellated appearance...
@VinLAURiA, we're goin' in a new direction with the retro stuff this time around, to keep in line with the new stylings of the non-retro aspects. Trust us, once you see this in motion, you won't miss the old and blocky as much.
I think Sega gonna sue ya'll for stealing Wonder Boy graphics (referring to the above screenshot).
@Chris, GAH! Crap, we missed our mark I guess! We were hoping to get sued by Hudson for stealing the Adventure Island graphics! But I guess we'll accept getting sued by Sega if we have to be sued by someone.
Think you can make launch?
@Secret_Tunnel, we're gonna try our damnedest! But we will not sacrifice the quality of the game to hit launch.
