End New trailer and info June 7

Rumor no more. Castlevania Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate has been officially announced for the 3DS via Nintendo Power. The game will star Trevor Belmont and feel feature deep combat mechanics, light & shadow magic, and much more. You can view scans for the game below. If you haven't played it already, you may want to play Castlevania Lords of Shadow for the PS3 and Xbox 360 because this sounds like it's going to continue the story line established in that game.

Thanks to @anon_mastermind for the heads up!

The latest issue of Nintendo Power is out, and some subscribers have already started to receive this month's edition. So what's on the cover? None other than that rumored Castlevania game for 3DS the internet has been buzzing about.

The game is called Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate. Try saying that 10 times fast. The magazine reveals that Mirror of Fate's Belmont of choice will be Trevor Belmont. He will fight using his version of the Combat Cross, Gabriel's weapon from the original Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

Other small details unveiled by the magazine (thanks to GoNintendo for the above scan) include the fact that light and shadow magic will be returning from the original Lords of Shadow. Using the L, R and face buttons, players will be able to attack with various weapons, grab enemies, block and dodge. Earning experience points will unlock the ability to execute combo moves, like launching enemies into the air, smashing them into the ground and so on.

For all your Belmont needs, keep it locked on IGN.

Will buy if linear.

@Zero

I thought the combo system was fine, and a bit more interesting than your garden variety combo based brawler.

But I don't think the game ever really feels like Castlevania. It wasn't conceived as a Castlevania game and it shows.

The one thing I like about Lords of Shadow is that it's (mostly) pretty linear. If they can do a really good, linear 3D Castlevania game, then I'm down. I was one of the few that actually enjoyed the N64 game(s) and I think if they expanded on that concept, they could have something really fun and unique.

The PS2 games were decent, too. They get more hate than they deserve, IMO.

@Kal-El814 agreed. LoS was the best GoW clone I've played, but it didn't feel like Castlevania at all, and I don't want it to be the series's future.

I actually wouldn't mind having two Castlevania franchises. The original main franchise and the Lords of Shadows franchise. Kinda like the Spider-Man and Ultimate Spider-Man.

I should probably give the Castlevania series another chance, all I have played are II and III on NES, and the two on the N64. I've been hesitant to do so since I liked the N64 ones and not the NES ones, but the newer ones seem like they may be different than both, so they're probably worth giving another chance.

For 3D Castlevania games they need to take a look at Metroid Prime and its level design. Maybe Lords of Shadow's combat is the way to make 3D whip battling work, but as for as bringing Metroidvania level design to 3D worlds, Metroid Prime did that already 10 years ago, so why hasn't Castlevania learned from that yet?

I'd say Castlevania has it even easier, because Metroid is often about traversing in odd ways and all whereas Castlevania doesn't really have as many "secret" ways to move around the castle, it's just... you run into a room, you can see a few ways to go, you pick one.

Shouldn't be too hard to pull off in 3D. Albeit with 3D you have to approach the design a bit differently.

I want a 3D action-adventure Castlevania... think Metroid Prime, only third person action.

@Mop it up Check out my reviews for all GBA and 2 of the DS games here. I'll review the third DS one after I'm done with Chrono Trigger DS.

looks 2.5D or 3D, not sure. Screenshots can be found at gonintendo

I was hoping it would be 2D (stereoscopic spritework ) but I'm still looking forward to this, especially if it's 2.5D. Looking forward to seeing more at E3!

@anon_mastermind
OH SHIT!!

So.

This is a western Castlevania by the guys who made Lord of Shadows, it's a Lord of Shadows side story, on 3DS, is a 3D action game ala Ninja Gaiden, and has Trevor Belmont in it??

Not sure if want!!

Link to pics please??

Edit: I don't care about anything right now, the return of a classic Belmont is fucking awesome.

This rumor piece has been upgraded to a news piece. Thanks @anon_mastermind for the heads up!

Now, time for wild speculation:
1. If this game involves Trevor Belmont, does this mean that Alucard, Sypha, and Grant may be in it as well? Will they join your party?
2. Is this a remake of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse for the NES?
3. If they are going through characters and games in the original timeline, does this mean that we will eventually see Simon Belmont.
4. Will a remake to Symphony of the Night be that far fetched now?
5. Will we ever see games in the original timeline again?

And some observations:
1. The game looks like it will play like a 3D third person action game (God of War).
2. There's some whip swinging mechanics like in Super Castlevania IV.
3. The character art looks nothing like the in-game model. At least clothing-wise.

So it's not 2 games after all? It's just the one 3DS game? Interesting.

Interesting.

The 2 screens look more "Castlevania" than the overwhelming amount of Lords of Shadow. The skeletons look like traditional Castlevania skeletons, the castle architecture looks more Gothic than most of the stuff in LoS did.

Obviously those pics are a super small amount of content and generalizing from them is foolish, but... it's all we've got. :p

I know. While I'm happy we're getting a new Castlevania game, it makes me worry about the future of the original story line.

@sirmastersephiroth

It's been confirmed to be toast, right?

Not that I don't have an attachment to it, but after 19 plot-canon games, the original storyline was a frigging mess.

Toast? As in over? I have no idea. If it is, then the only thing that I will always regret is not seeing the Battle of 1999 in a real game.

AWESOME news that the 3DS game is confirmed as being real!

... kinda disappointed it's a 3D game, not a 2D one. Still, it's Castlevania. So...
