What The Smerd? A Link to the Past turns 20 in NA

April 13th was a good day: In 1992, A Link to the Past came out.

Some of you played it on that day but I was not that lucky. I had not recieved a SNES until Christmas of 1992 and only read my NP magazine over and over again as well as the free players guide that I received from renewing my subscription.

The stories that were written up like a history book of sorts in this guide kept my interest up for months - I was just amazed that I had somehow missed playing the original Legend of Zelda.

Anyways, my parents were very hesitent on upgrading my system from the NES but with the help of my grandparents, Christmas morning I was able to see this:

Me and my cousins played this game for hours - lighting torches/expanding rooms for the first time, cutting suspicious looking grass and collecting rupees.

It's the best Zelda game of the series in my opinion and the one game that got me hooked into the adventure genre and more importantly, the Zelda Universe.

This month, why don't you boot this game up. Play it on SNES if you still have one, the GBA port, or the Wii VC. Call yourself a gamer? Play this game.

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

You SOB... cause maybe I will... as if I didn't have a big backlog already.. but if it's the 20th...

I bought this for my girlfriend for a surprise bonus christmas present, on the WiiVC... but maybe I should get it for myself.... or drag out my SNES... it works still....

Hmm.....

Great post Smerd!

Edit: Though on second though, perhaps you could either re-think your intro or just combine your first few sentences, cause remember how this looks on our front page? It just says "Oh yeah..." and that's it. For editorial content that'll be displayed on the front page, we should make sure it's not just a one or two word blurb. And the grabber takes the first paragraph usually. Just a suggestion. The title alone probably will grab people though.

Greatest game of all time.

First game I ever completed by myself. Just so sad it all went downhill from there...

@DrFinkelstein

No..you're right. I typed this up in a bit of a hurry because I had almost finished it the first time then completely lost my whole article by a silly mouse click.

@missypissy

By that comment do you mean the Zelda series, or the fact you have had trouble finishing the games in your library?

If it's the Zelda series - why do you think it's gone downhill?

Really the game that feels like a classic in the series to me Maybe a replay is in order soon! It would be a good time to announce a "sequel" at E3 if Miyamoto's comments are any indication of one.

I have such fond memories of playing LttP first time through.

I was working as a clinical tech counselor in a series of half-way houses in our community. Since I was still in school, I was working the graveyard shift and one of the houses I stopped by every night had a client with a SNES. I basically beat LttP in 4 hour sessions in the middle of the night.

Being that it was the holidays, all of our houses were decorated with trees and lights, etc. So long after the clients went to bed, I would be in the living room with only the holiday lights and the tv on, playing LttP. Thinking of the joy I felt playing LttP in that still environment bathed in red and blue light makes me feel not only nostalgia for the game, but also an age of youthful innocence and optimism. They're all wrapped up together.

You know, I really have no problem with this statement.

To each his own, but I don't even consider A Link to the Past to be the best Zelda game. Still a great game though.

20 years eh? I only played this for the first time a few years ago on the VC. I really liked it, and I'll try to run through it once more this summer.

20 years ago, on Christmas Eve, the game of A Link to the Past and of course the SNES dominated my thoughts as I wondered if I would get them on Christmas morning. However, when I went downstairs after not getting much sleep - it wasn't there. My parents had decided to hide it till the last minute - after all the other presents were opened. Sheesh.

20 Years later around the Christmas Holidays - I'm playing this game. After playing a few new VC titles last night, I went back to this game and continued on my quest. I'm now at the "last dungeon" - it's very comforting playing a game you love so much - especially during the holidays. You can put the recent life stresses behind you, and continue on the adventure you love so much...

How did I miss this thread back in April?

Either way it took me a little bit to final get to this particular Zelda. Link's Awakening was my first full Zelda experience and it made me ask for ALttP for Christmas and since then I've beaten the game so much, it is kind of silly. One of a few games that I'll replay on an at least once yearly basis.

Yup. I have played it at least once a year as well, and I still marvel at its design perfection every time... seriously, the game doesn't have one single notable flaw. The current Zelda team should really go back and study it, along with every other developer really.

I'm hoping that the sequel thing they were teasing actually stands a chance of happening.

Took me years to play this as I wasn't even born when it was released. I played the GBA version though and I loved it. Not my favorite Zelda, not my most remembered and nostalgic Zelda, but still a darn good Zelda.
