Thanks @kgtennispro for the heads up.

Pokemon producer, Junichi Masuda, has promised a BIG Pokemon announcement on this Sunday's edition of the Pokemon Smash show. He said it will be a "very important announcement." Could it be Pokemon Gray or a new generation game for the 3DS? We'll have to wait till 5:30pm EST today to find out.

No. This is not an image of the new game.

For anyone who's been dying for the next big bit of Pokemon news - it's time to get excited. Earlier today Pokemon producer Junichi Masuda took to the GameFreak blog with the tantalizing promise that he would be making a "very important announcement" on the Japanese show Pokemon Smash.

Here's exactly what he had to say:

"On this coming Sunday, Februrary 26, 2012, from 7:30 A.M,
I, Masuda, will be appearing on TV TOKYO's Show, "Pokemon Smash!" Not only that. And there… I will be making a VERY important announcement,so be sure not to miss it!! Watch it live on TV!

And, for those of you who can't watch television on live, I will announce the same information right after the show via twitter!! Everyone, I hope you all enjoy the show!! Ciao!"

For those of us Stateside, that translates to 2:30pm PST this Saturday, so keep an on IGN tomorrow for all the breaking news.

While we won't know for sure what Masuda will announce until tomorrow, it wouldn't be a stretch to expect the third installment in the Black and White set of games (Pokemon Gray?), or even perhaps news on the next generation of Pokemon titles. After all, the first glimpse we had of Pokemon Black and White was a silhouette of Zoroark on the Japanese show Pokemon Sunday. Still, with all the Pokemon spinoffs in existence, anything is possible.

Or perhaps it's Pokemon Snap 2... (Oh please, oh please, oh please!)

In any case, stay tuned to IGN for all the latest Pokemon news as it breaks.

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

Ds games... Ugh... Big mistake, I guess Nintendo doesn't want the 3ds to explode over summer.

I don't get it. Black & White 2? So instead of just releasing one expansion (Gray), they're going to release two?

@Secret_Tunnel

Well boo.

That kinda takes away most of my excitement

Yeah, I don't get why it's a DS game rather than a 3DS game. Just got a 3DS too, was hoping for the latter.

Of course I'm still likely getting one of the two, but just such a weird announcement. I don't see the reason for making a sequel on the DS at this point.

Update #2. Picture of new legendaries included.

So wait, are they actual sequels, or more like the regular upgrades we usually get? Really, why aren't they doing Grey/Gray if there is a third legendary?

I think it means it's going to be a new adventure set in the same universe. I'm all for it.

Hmm, I was really hoping for a 3DS game. I may sit this one out.

So I wonder, aside from these legendaries, which look like they've fused with the third one, I don't know its name, Binladenmon I'll call it since it's a reference to 9/11, if there will by any new Pokemon, which if there are, doesn't that mean this is a new generation? This is weird.

@Brick This is pretty unprecedented. It reminds me of the time when Square announced Final Fantasy X2 since, until that time, there had been no direct sequel to a main game in the series. I too wonder what they are doing with the third legendary and the starters.

I still don't know what's more mind blowing, that there are two of them, or how they are DS games...

I'm gonna wait till they announce "Pokemon Gray 2". Then I'll bite.

It kinda explain why it took so long to release Meloetta, Genesect & Keldeo. I guess they'll be released in the next game... it's a bit of a shame, but if they're tied to the storyline, it's better.

Well we can play it on our 3ds but I don't know why they didn't give the 3d treatment to them. I guess as DS games they will sell a ton more copies since its a much bigger market right now. Probably a smart business decision.

Ok guys, I have a confession to make. I have yet to buy or play Pokemon Black (the version I was gonna buy). I wanted to for a long time now, but was waiting on the 3DS version. It doesn't look like we'll be getting a 3DS version anytime soon, so I guess I'll just go ahead and purchase it for the DS.....

Sometimes I wonder why I even bother hoping......

I'm... I'm not sure how I feel about this.

This is the first time Nintendo's done this, right? Making a DIRECT sequel to a Pokémon game?

Interesting that's it's for DS. That thing still sells and prints money! Looks like I'll have yet another game (or two!) to purchase for the ol' girl.

So...this isn't going to be for 3DS? Wtf? Wouldn't they want to drive 3DS hardware sales?

Guess this rules out any possibility of having 3D battles too. I was very likely going to pass on this anyway, but now I'm definitely out.
