Unlike someone on this board, I’m not a huge sports fan - unless it has to do with football. I mean the real version - the one you play with your feet. (Soccer)..
However, back in the early 90’s, I was actually into Major League Baseball in a big way and there were two reasons for that:
1.There were no soccer leagues/teams to join in my new neighbourhood where I was growing up. Softball was it (which was fun and played it for 10 years) so I was at least participating in a sport very similar to the main game.
2. The Toronto Blue Jays were kicking major ass.
When it came to video baseball games, Ken Griffey Jr Baseball for the SNES was really good but the baseball game that sticks out in my mind - the one that just seemed so outrageously awesome - was BaseWars
The loose story of this game is that the owners finally got sick and tired of paying the outrageous salaries of all the major league players so they replaced them with robots.
Cool.
So you get your basic human cyborg, a cyborg that’s crossed with a tank, a hover type cyborg and finally one that looks like it’s combined with a motorcycle. When you win games, you win money to upgrade your players armor and..... weapons.
That’s right sports fans, it’s a fighting game too. So there are exaggerated pitching speeds, running speeds and overall athletic abilities but fights happen a lot because it determines wether you are safe or not if there is a play at one of the 4 bases. No need for instant replay here. You want 2nd base? Then fight for it...
Here is a video for you:
So there you have it - a great game to play with your friends if you want a little sport..and also want a little action. Heck, when a robot takes enough of a beating, he even blows up. How cool is that? You could actually win the whole game if you blow up 3 robots so that gives everyone motivation to rumble. Add in some customization (want all cycle bots? no problem!) like changing the length of the game and this game, to me, is a classic that should be played. Baseball fan or not.
