Already, it's time to gather around and listen to another Negative World podcast! Jamie a.k.a PogueSquadron and Paul a.k.a. Ploot recorded with host Guillaume a.k.a. Guillaume to discuss Limbo, Mighty Switch Force, Super Meat Boy, Fluidity and Kirby Dream Land.

The crew then discusses how we see and how we think Nintendo will handle DLC and GOTY editions, the length of games, and Mega Man's forgotten 25th anniversary.

As usual, the theme music comes from Negative World's owner and dictator, Zero. The music throughout the podcast is taken from Mega Man 9. Comment on the topics, the podcast, the guests, the host, etc. on Negative World! Or, be a weirdo and post them on Facebook or Twitter instead.

I work early tomorrow so I can't check the podcast out till at least tomorrow evening, but there's an m4a version? You don't need me to do it?

Just finished listening. Pretty solid episode, guys!

You can definitely hear me laughing in the background when you are talking about Kirby sucking and spitting or something like that, haha. I'm very mature.

Also disappointed that none of us made the obligatory "It's not the length, it's what you do with it" joke.

@PogueSquadron
Heh.

Well, I am about a third of the way through it. Pretty solid so far!

I hope others give it a listen.

You guys are wild, haha.

I could've hopped in on like every topic.
You know, not well, but I would've been there.

I'll post my thoughts tomorrow. But now: Sleep!

Listened to the first half hour or so.

I'll chime in on Limbo. I really enjoyed the game, and the puzzles in that game are a nice reminder of how easy a lot of games have become, as Limbo had me stuck quite frequently. I'm okay with the gore, and I think it adds to the overall experience, particularly in the early-going. I wasn't anticipating it being that graphic, and the first time my character got dismembered, I felt quite a bit of shock. It hit me in a way not many games have.

As for the plot interpretation, I also did some reading up after beating it, but I'm not so sure that there is this deep plot, or a plot at all. A lot of this stemmed from when I read one of the designers talking about how, as the game development went along and they kept creating levels, they admitted to losing track of where the game was heading and just focused on making clever puzzle/platforming sequences. Which was fine by me, I had a blast playing it, but it's obvious that the game starts meandering quite a bit in the second half. The uneasiness I felt in the early going also went away, as the game shifted towards more industrial and less organic level design.

The 360 version I have (got it in the XBLA "Triple Pack") has a gore filter, and it's weird that this wasn't in the other versions. I agree with Pogue, that it probably wouldn't have made THAT big of a difference in the end, but it definitely adds to the experience at the outset and let's you know right away, "Hey, this is a dangerous place, so you better not screw around."

I recommend everyone to check it out, if they haven't. The puzzle platforming and atmosphere are top-notch.

Alright, thoughts on stuff. Of course, I can't remember what anyone talked about, ugh.

-I've never played Limbo, and I probably won't. You know how I operate.
-Is the dismembering WORSE because it is happening to a kid? If it were an adult, would the blow be lessened?
-Shorts games have their places. Remember that mostly everything on NES is super-short. Contra = 20 minutes.
-I beat Super Mario Bros. 3 within 4 days of purchase..
-And a friend of mine went to K-Mart, got Clayfighter after dinner, and had it beat by 7. With one of the guys.
-Anand gave me Fluidity. Its cool. I haven't gotten that far though. 2 things in? My first rainbow drop?

-DLC for skins..eh. Not really cool. The Mrs_ and I are playing through Marvel Ultimate Alliance now, and its cool when you get to a certain level/whatever and get a new uniform that you can put on. It would kinda stink if you COULDN'T do that without paying 2 bucks for it, or something. And if the DLC doesn't ENHANCE the game at all? Thats kinda weird. I can tell you thought that I have bought DLC (mostly every week for Rock Band) that hasn't done anything, like when I bought a little Orioles Hat for my avatar on Winster (check it out when you have an entire day to kill). It was a buck.
-More stages is cool when you absolutely love the game and you never want it to end. I don't know what they can do though. I DON'T like pay-to-play games, or getting in-game money with real money. Not sure what to think / expect.

-I'm a huge Mega Fan. I grew up with the series, I've beaten every game up through 8 and X4 (or X5? I can't remember). Mega Man 2 was actually the first game I played, and I was surprised when I saw Mega Man available for rent one day. What the heck is this? And why are there only 6 guys?
-Mega Man (1) is by far the hardest of the original, classic series. Mega Man 9 has overtaken it (on purpose), haha, but that first game is just dastardly. I think they made Mega Man 2 so easy so people who were scared off by the first one would/could enjoy the 2nd one. That said, its my favorite Mega Man game, bar none.
-Someone mentioned Mega Man X and how it was closer to Mega Man than 7 was? Yeah, I can agree with that. How did they F up 7 (suddenly I want a 7-Up, hmm) so much? I agree with everything that had been said about it. Except for the Dr Wily stage music. It was "cool," I guess, but I don't even like that better than anything out of Mega Man X, and certainly nothing out of Mega Man 2.
-I own the first 7 cartridges, X and X2, the Anniversary Collection, and the X Collection on GC.
-The jump/shoot being reversed IS annoying, but you CAN get used to it. And remember what was big around that time? Metroid Prime. How do you jump and shoot in Metroid Prime? Jump with B, Shoot with A, the same way you do in Metroid Prime. And you charge up your Buster/Armcannon the same way, too. I think thats what they were thinking when they made it; makes sense to me, and I'm DEFINITELY more used to playing Mega Man than a Metroid GC game, trust me.
-Instead of another 8-bit Mega Man game (which I WOULD love), as a more fitting 25th Anniversary thing, I'd LOVE to see a new 16-bit X game.
-Playstation F'd up everything Mega Man. Notice that all of the games that are farther away from NES/SNES are declared the worst? Soccer Balls? Gimme a BREAK. (I'm aware that there is Mega Man Soccer on SNES, and its horrible!)

I guess thats it? I can't remember anything else. If you want specific feedback on something, ask me!

No, no, no, no, NO. It's not the same at all.

- You lock on in Metroid Prime. That means whatever height the enemy is, you're hitting it. In Mega Man, you have to be at the exact same height.

- You don't "hop" in Metroid Prime. When you jump, you jump. In Mega Man, you need to hold down the button but not so in MP.

Those two things make all the difference in the world. MP and MM's controls are not analogous in the least.

Pfffft, whatever dude.

What did I just tell you? I played Mega Man more than ANYTHING when I was younger (more than Mario. Well..), and I made the switch without many problems. Of course, I'd still PREFER to play on the NES pad. Heck, I have more trouble playing Mega Man 9 (control scheme) than I do with the Anniversary Collection. Really!

I have to hold my hand totally different!!

EDIT- I should also add that the last time I played Mega Man 2 (far removed from "practice") on the Anniversary Collection, I breezed through it without having to spend a continue. If it were disturbingly awful, theres no way I could've done that (and I played the games in order, of course!).

Listened to the next third tonight. Great discussion on game length. I went through a super gaming funk between '08 and early last year, to the point where my backlog has gotten ridiculous (all those games I skipped over). I was playing through Assassin's Creed 1 back in September and just got bored and didn't play another game for a few weeks. Then I just went to some other, shorter games. .

I just have so much to play, and yet I have less time for it than at any point in my life. As a result, I tend to prefer games in the 8-10 hour range. I'd rather games be shorter and be better paced, than to drag on. I don't feel like a game needs to add padding to justify the price. If the 8-10 hours of gameplay is excellent, then I think it was worth it. Gosh, Skyward Sword absolutely did not have to be a 40 hour game. At 25-30 hours, without a lot of the fluff, I'd probably be a lot more favorable about it. Good example of where longer =/= better.

Can't think of too many games that come across as "too short" anymore, but that may just be because shorter games suit me better today than they would have when I was younger.

One thing about the deleted scenes comparison is that a deleted scene can still be really good, but it just destroys the pacing of the movie. If Skyward Sword's last third had been cut out, polished up and sold as DLC, the game probably would have been better overall.

Oh, right! Deleted scenes!

Yeah, I don't very often go "oh man, they shoulda left that in!"

Have you seen the Star Wars: Episode I deleted scenes? There is one right when they get to Naboo, and they're on this waterfall or something. Its..horrible. I mean, what do you expect of a DELETED SCENE from the worst movie in the franchise?, haha.

..So, is anyone seeing the 3D one? I heard its the Game of the Year Edition, or something..

@TheOldManFromZelda

Haha, I want to go see the movie and yell that there. It'll be like the new Rocky Horror.

We can throw pizza rolls at the screen, too.

I listened to this today. Good discussions people. I wasn't able to write all my thoughts down as they happened so this is a tiny response lol but I definitely want more Mega Man, both how Pogue said it and more like MM10. However, with Fluidity (thanks for the shout out) I would like to mention, that inconsistent jumping mechanic is totally noticable in the final boss room. And the "checkpoints" aren't consistent. I got so sick of the combination of the one-hit-kill then having to repeat a tedious section. So annoying. Such a turn off. As for the concept of short games, it's an interesting point. We go to the movies for a 2 hour full experience right? Why not in gaming? Why does everything have to take days to complete? However most short games tend not to be that satisfying, a trend I think that's changing slowly.

C'mon guys, give this one a listen (and comment!) before a new episode is recorded tonight...

I will add that I did in fact beat Fluidity. There was a means for my new checkpoint and that made it a lot less tedious near the end. Plus, I think I just had gotten a bit better at it. I think I was watching Die Hard simultaneously.

I just started this one. Interested in hearing what you guys have to say about Limbo, it's on PSN now so I could buy it.

I still think the newest episode should always be stickied. Maybe once the donation drive goes down.
