Disney has announced through its Fan Club newsletter that it plans to release Epic Mickey 2 this Christmas. The game will allow a second player to join in the fun with a new splitscreen mode playing as Oswald the Luck Rabbit, harnessing the power of electricity and flight. No online coop has been confirmed at this time.

The newsletter reads

"Disney Epic Mickey 2 is the latest game in the critically acclaimed Disney Epic Mickey videogame series. In this all-new action-platforming game available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii, Mickey embarks on an epic journey and is pulled back into a world filled with Disney's forgotten characters. Players can choose to play single-player as Mickey or for the first time players can also choose two-player split screen mode. In the two-player mode one person can play as Mickey wielding magic paint and paint thinner to dynamically change the world and the second player can play as Oswald the Lucky Rabbit - Walt Disney's first cartoon star - with the power to fly like a helicopter and use electricity to fight or friend enemies and solve challenges. Team-up and choose your path to save this forgotten world because the choices you make will alter the story and change the end of the game!"

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

I wonder if Warren Spector will be involved.

I got about halfway through the first game, but I sort of lost interest. I may go back to it again someday.

What's with cartoon rabbits having the ability to fly? Why does that come up so often?

Why is this game coming to PS3 and 360? Are they trying to pull a de Blob 2 here? And if so... WHY?

You know what system this game should also come out for? 3DS. and maybe vita?

I still need to play the Wii original. I got it Christmas day 2010, but got distracted by Donkey Kong Country Returns, which I also received that same day. Maybe I should get around to that? *shrugs*

Like @GameDadGrant, I got it for Christmas last year. I started it, liked what I played, but then got distracted by other games. I need to get back to it.

Also, will the game require Move and Kinect support? Just curious...

I would think that they would want the 360/PS3 versions to be the main versions so that they could easily do a WiiU port.

@PogueSquadron

Wii U uses the Wiimote too.

I still have only played the first level of EM at a friend's, and the pointer was definitely the best thing about the controls, so it takes a little imagination to see playing with a regular controller being an improvement.

@Simbabbad

I would wait to see holiday sales before I pronounced it dead for the crowd who most helped the original game sell 2.5 million. Have there been any rumblings on how well Wii sold this season?

Not to say it doesn't make perfect sense to bring the game to other platforms.

@Simbabbad

I dunno, Just Dance and games like that seem to continue selling well. Mickey games are always going to get people at stores recommending them to moms during the holidays and such.

And I really don't know if a "huge majority" of people who bought this game were disappointed in it. You're not going to get a reasonable sample size based on people posting on message boards when it was mainly kids playing it. My 15 year old niece didn't like it but my 6 year old niece loved it.

Anyway, Wii probably will be pretty much dead at that point since Wii U will be out, so it is strange they wouldn't make a Wii U version.

Will buy if on Wii U. Will not buy otherwise.

Sorry, Disney, but as much as I love you I just don't want to play games in SD anymore and my 360 has onset of RROD (and I don't even care because I turn it on maybe twice a year these days).

So I guess we'll see! Would be great, though, especially considering split screen co-op and I could play with my wife.

@Simbabbad

I just don't think the "Wii is dead" when it just sold 860,000 in November and surely more in December. And I'm reasonably sure Epic Mickey 2 will justify its existence on the Wii even with the Wii U already out.

But I think it would be smart to make a Wii U version as soon as possible to capitalize on launch and help build the casual base on Wii U.

It will sell decently on the Wii, mostly to parents buying for their kids who don't have a Wii U/PS3/360.

But it really should release on Wii U and be the best looking version. It probably will drop or at most have optional pointer controls anyways, so we might see some clever use of the touch screen controller.

Well unless dead means still selling millions, you're wrong.

How about we all agree the Wii is on its last legs? Seems like a well rounded assertion.

@Simbabbad

Do you think Mario Party 9 will sell? If so, I consider your view to be much more nuanced than "Wii is dead"

But you could say the same for the PS2. It's what's releasing on the system and the potential software sales that's relevant. That's my point.

I don't think the PS2 pulled those sorts of number at the end, but hey, I could be wrong.

Likewise releasing stuff for the PS2 towards the end still wasn't a bad plan, right? They still sold quite a bit to all those not ready to jump to the next level.

It'll probably be a case where there's a Wii and WiiU version, not unlike how games showed up on XBox and 360 6 years ago.

@Simbabbad I'd kind of half agree with you, except that Wii was already pretty dead when the last one released and it still sold close to 2 million copies. I think "Mickey" on the Wii can be like "Mario" on the Wii, IE it can sell when next to nothing else can.

I'm also not sure that the game shows that they struggled with the hardware. It more shows that they struggled with a style and genre way different than anything they had ever attempted. You often see this happen when an otherwise great developer tries something completely different than what they are used to.

I haven't actually played it, no. A lot of the complaints I heard seemed related to trying to make a platformer, like camera controls (which barely matter in most games nowadays) and jumping mechanics and all of that. I suppose you could be right about them struggling with the hardware but really... why would Warren Spector and his team struggle with hardware that a bunch of unknown/b-level developers have put out great games on? Isn't he supposed to be some techy god? I imagine if they were making some kind of FPS or something they would have pulled it off better.

Was that Christmas really that healthy? I remember a lot of people talking about how the Wii was going to get destroyed. And it sort of did, except for DKCR and Epic Mickey and the stuff that always sells like Mario/casual games.

@Zero

Destroyed? It sold the most consoles, didn't it? And DKCR, Epic Mickey, Mario games, Just Dance, Michael Jackson Experience is a huge chunk of games, so that seems strange to say.

I'm interested in how people think Mario Party 9 will sell. If the Wii is truly dead, with casual gamers having moved on to Xbox 360 and Kinect and gamers anticipating the next generation then you'd expect the game to do pretty poorly, right?

I mean in software, and not hardware. Or to be more specific, "core" software, because of course it sold (and still sells) a lot of Just Dance and the likes. Basically a lot of people expected Epic Mickey and even DKCR to take a beating, but they ultimately both sold great. It may have been the last Christmas that this was possible though. We'll see how Skyward Sword sells, it will of course sell millions when all is said and done, but I don't think it will come close to Twilight Princess sales. I expect more like... Majora's Mask sales. Which is ok I suppose, but I think Nintendo put a lot more work into this one (or claim to have anyway.)
