A very special episode of the Negative World Podcast this week! Special guest Julius Riecke talks about the ongoing development of his homebrew NES game, Super Bat Puncher! Play the demo now to have fun with physics and punch bats with a giant spring-loaded boxing glove! And don't miss bonus Riecke after the closing music...
Then, Guillaume and Stephen a.k.a. DrFinkelstein find themselves alone to talk about Mario Kart Wii, Picross DS, Layton and Kirby.
Moving on to the topics, Stephen hopes to discuss The Legend of Zelda franchise with other excited fans, but finds himself locked in a room with only "killjoy" Guillaume. To make matters worse, Guillaume then decides to rant about an iPhone game no one cares about, and proceeds to mercilessly attack the capitalist system in Animal Crossing, another one of Stephen's favorite franchises!
Most unusual: the theme music comes directly from the Super Bat Puncher soundtrack by Dave Harris. The end music turns out to be an OCRemix by our very own Cubed777! And of course, the music throughout the episode comes straight to you from the Zelda franchise.

Excited to hear how I sound cause frankly, it's been a while since I've done one of these. My intro itself is awkward cause for a second I forgot how to introduce myself, lol. I'll do another episode much sooner than the gap between this one and my last one.
Plus, I thought of a really nice topic to discuss for the next time and it's timely.
Thanks! We discussed music, so it fit. Not sure I'm gonna make it a recurring thing, however, it was a lot more work than expected. And getting the music to not drown out the talk, but still be audible? I don't know why but it's really hard to do with Audacity. I have simply next to no idea how the mix will be until I do it.
Excellent interview! Very good questions, I found this quite informative, to say the least. Honestly, I never really paid attention to homebrew games for one reason or another, but hearing Julius talk about his passion for making an NES game was really cool and interesting. To top it off, these games are eventually fabricated on real NES cartrdidges! Awesome. I should really check out the demo. As was mentioned in the interview, if only he could get the game on WiiWare or something. It'll probably never happen though.
Mr. Mustache indeed has been handling the Mario Kart League very well.
Ah, Stephen's discussion about the Zelda series was very good. Gui, you did a great job with the music overlays, I didn't find it too obtrusive or overpowering at all. A nice broad range of Zelda music was discussed; it makes me want to go to the 25th anniversasy orchestra concert more than ever. I have to completely agree with Gui, Phantom Hourglass had a pretty bad dungeon theme song and is probably a big reason I didn't enjoy the game as much.
OK, I was seriously thinking to myself 'that's how how I feel when I play a Metroid game' while Stephen was discussing how he becomes immersed in Hyrule, and it turns out Gui was thinking the same thing!
I do love Twilight Princess and am replaying it for the third time, this time playing along with my wife. There are many amazing moments in that game. I easily get lost in that game (in a good way!), straying off the path and exploring.

Jetpack Joyride doesn't sound too good, this is the first time I've heard of it. It seems a bit ridiculous to have all this extra content you have to pay for. It is pretty bad that the game makers prey off of people. It's hard to believe this constitutes a game nowadays. I can sort of see Gui's point when comparing the game philosophy to Animal Crossing, but you don't have to pay real money for the extras in AC.
I enjoyed hearing Cubed777's (Adam Prack) Majora's Mask remix once again. And as we've said before, congrats on making it to OC Remix! I don't know if it's just my ipod but the volume seemed to go down a little bit during that ending song.
Damn! This podcast went up fast as hell! Listened to it at work today.
Man, this guy Julius, is wasting all his talents if he is just going to release this game on an actual 8 bit cart. I mean, thats all good and all, but he should also release the rom with an emulator as well, but only in a way that people would have to pay for it. Releasing a rom with less features is just a bad idea. If I was going to buy the game, I want the whole thing. And even if it would be free, I don't want some stripped down rom to play.
Not sure why he wouldn't at least try contacting Nintendo to try to get the game on the VC. Hell, show them the game and sell them the rights to it or something. And if they wouldn't want anything to do with it, well at least he tried. Then, Im sure Xbox or PS would probably buy it up. Also, I loved all the talk about the Legend of Zelda!!! Made me even more hyped for the game!!! I hope some of the stuff comes true that you guys mentioned, like being in a dungeon, but not knowing it, ect. I hope this Zelda game does break the typical Zelda mold. Not that I would be upset if it didn't, but a change is in order.
One of these days I am actually going to have to try out a Kirby game. I did buy Epic Yarn last year, but I know thats not a traditional kirby game. I think I feel the same way as Stephen. Kirby games, at least the way I look at them, are for little kids. Its like, I never ever saw myself playing a Kirby game and if it wasn't for the cool graphical effects in Epic Yarn, I wouldn't have bought that game...but I am glad I did.
From what I've heard about Skyward Sword, it's supposed to be really breaking the mold a bit. To the "forest" example I used? Maybe not but apparently it's a step in that direction. We'll find out soon enough I suppose but I am psyched to find out.
And I don't know if I would ever say Kirby is for kids, but I think subconsciously that's where I stand. That I simply wont be satisfied from it. But I am prepared to take the challenge and see if anything changes for me. I own the original on Gameboy (or did that come after the NES one?) and I did enjoy it but I realize now I've never ever beaten that. I suppose I owe it to myself to see.
Well, I listened to the podcast! Great show you guys. Here are my thoughts:
1.) Maybe that Super Bat Puncher game will end up being better than I initially thought. When I first saw it, I thought "meh" but... maybe I was wrong. Julius seems quite passionate about what he's doing, and he's very open about taking suggestions from players and adding ideas to his game. And he's planning on putting this on an actual NES cart? That's... kind of awesome. Perhaps I'll have to check it out after all.
2.) Totally agree with Stephen on Zelda's music. It's awesome, and it can really transcend from just being "video game music" into something more. As Gui pointed out, the opening for Link's Awakening was completely awesome, and I knew after watching it and hearing the music, the game was going to rule. I've been known to listen to Zelda music when I'm driving around in my car, and it's fantastic. Almost makes me feel like I'M going on an adventure, lol!
3.) I don't think it's wise to ask for hate mail at the end. Because the ones out there that really hate the podcast? They're going to NOT send mail or post here just to spite us.
Nice job, again! You get (another) 5 stars on iTunes!

Yikes, I hope I didn't edit out the part where DrFink says the exact same thing by mistake!
I feel similarly about certain soundtracks while driving. I have the Smash Live CD that Nintendo Power gave out a long time ago, and it starts off with the orchestrated "Corneria" from Star Fox 64. Man, watch out for me on the road during that. Should be illegal.
