REDMOND, Wash., July 28, 2011 – Nintendo of America today announced plans to drop the suggested retail price of its portable Nintendo 3DS™ system to $169.99 in the United States, as new games based on some of the world's most beloved video game franchises head to the system. The new price, down from the suggested launch price of $249.99 and effective Aug. 12, makes an outstanding value even better and sets up a strong holiday season for the system.

"For anyone who was on the fence about buying a Nintendo 3DS, this is a huge motivation to buy now," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "We are giving shoppers every incentive to pick up a Nintendo 3DS, from an amazing new price to a rapid-fire succession of great games."

I bet Christmas. Probably the ocarina bundle that Aus. got. Or something similar. Gold 3ds would be so awesome.

Apparently it only costs 101 dollars to make a 3ds. So 3.61 million times 101 is a whole lot. Also Sony must be shitting their pants. 250 for a vita doesn't look so good now.

Goddamn, that's amazing. This move does reek of desperation on Nintendo's part however. While this makes the system more appealing to me, it does make me wonder if it will be enough to save the 3DS in the future.

It's sold 3.6 million units so far. Only half a million short of their goals. They were over priced as it only costs 101 to manufacture and the library has been lacking big time, but still almost hit there sales goal. This is going to take off from here like crazy. This will be very close to what the ds did after a year or so of being out.

Sooo, anybody who ALREADY OWNS a 3DS gets 20 free games, right?
This would NOT apply to price drop purchases..

1.Starting Sept. 1, Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors will be able to download 10 NES™ Virtual Console™ games at no charge and before they are available in the Nintendo eShop to the general public. These games, including Super Mario Bros.™, Donkey Kong Jr.™, Balloon Fight™, Ice Climber™ and The Legend of Zelda™, are slated to become paid downloadable games, but Ambassadors get them early for free. Once the paid versions of the games are posted to the Nintendo eShop later in the year, the updated versions will be available to Ambassadors for download at no cost.
2.By the end of 2011, Nintendo will provide Ambassadors with 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. These include games like Yoshi’s Island™: Super Mario™ Advance 3, Mario Kart™: Super Circuit, Metroid™ Fusion, WarioWare™, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario vs. Donkey Kong™. These games will be available exclusively to Ambassadors, and Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future.

Whoa.

@Mr_Mustache

Almost makes you feel sorry for those losers who *don't* have a 3DS.

....Oh.

Seriously, 20 free games? Way cool. I probably won't care about half of them, but still.

I agree. It's kinda ouch for Nintendo but it's a good move. Let's just hope it works out for them. If they continued to not sell well at this price that'd really, really suck.

I'm shocked by this. I don't really own one yet (both brothers do) so this is great for me. Isn't this a really quick pricedrop? They didn't even wait for the holidays!

$170 is a lot more tempting but so far there is still only OoT that has my interest. I hope those GBA games become available for purchase for new owners though. Some great titles in there.

I've thought about this a little more, and personally, since the 20 "free" games and the price drop cannot be had simultaneously, I'm still not sure when exactly I'll get a 3DS. Plus it's not like the GBA games are exclusive, since... you can still get them for the Game Boy Advance. Plus Legends 3 cancellation

That's a huge move! Considering the 1st party line-up alone that's coming, I wouldn't have been surprised to see Nintendo only drop the price a little or even stick to 249.

At 169 it becomes a family friendly device. They still need to get the right advertising campaign, but it's a big step in the right direction.

Holy shit. Big move... but the thing was over-priced for sure.

20 free games makes me pretty happy, though... just a shame you have to choose NES and GBA titles only.

I also like this because it probably means that they will be a lot more careful with the initial pricing of the Wii U.

Gimme a decent price here in the UK Nintendo and I'll buy one and a copy of DOA the morning of the drop.

£150 for the system and a game would be Golden.

Got mine OoT launch. I got fucked.

NES and GBA games, no selection. Great.

Woooow. Color me surprised. I've been on the fence since its release ($250 is a lot for me, 'cause I suck), but figured I'd just go ahead and take the plunge sometime later in the year when all the big games have surfaced. But now, this little nugget of information has swiftly eradicated any wavering thoughts I may have had regarding a potential 2011 purchase; make no mistake, the 3DS will be mine.

Having said that, the price-cut coinciding with a flippin' cool, cherry-red skin tone would just be the icing on my strawberry cake

Knowing this now, I think I would've rather waited for the price drop. The free games are a nice gift but only one out of the ten titles kind of interests me. I wonder if they plan on having any kind of wait for us to sort games in the future. Having 20 titles clutter up the menu will be annoying... not to mention how fun all of that will be to download

I'm confused.

I thought the 20 free games were for everyone who already bought the 3DS and anyone who will buy it soon after the price drop. As in "early adopters of the newly price dropped 3DS", but it's just for people who already own the system?

Or ones who already own it/buy it before the new price drop?

Which is it?

How about making some actually awesome 3DS games? I'm still not interested.
