NSMBW sells a million during its first month in NA

Nintendo hardware dominates. Various Nintendo software still selling.

Modern Warfare 2's numbers kind of sadden me, not that it's not a great game and all, but dang... it seems only shooters see those kind of first month numbers.

New Super Mario Brothers Wii off to a great start. And considering it sold almost a million its first week in Japan and NOA announced it has broken 2 million in the US, it's already up at 3 million between NA and Japan alone. I'm going to go out on a tiny limb here and say when all is said and done it will still come out ahead of Modern Warfare 2 worldwide. This game is going to keep selling and selling and selling.

Not much else surprising, I'm guessing Sony wishes their massively praised Uncharted 2 was still charting, but ah well, it still outsold the first I think... or will soon.

The part of me hoping for good WM+ support is pleased to see Wii Sports Resort still selling 3/4 million a month. (Plus it's a good game)

The Wii media/analyst backlash continues, despite the clear enthusiasm from the people with wallets. ::shrug::

It's still amazing (amazingly good) that the DS continues to mop the floor with the consoles. The only system that came close to matching its numbers is the Wii, and that's still a ways off. And... is my math right? Did the DS actually outsell both the PS3 *and* 360... COMBINED?!?

Nintendomination, indeed.

Too bad DS software doesn't sell as big (unless it's Pokémon or something). But I guess those titles don't have to sell as much to turn a profit and guarantee more support from companies and future sequels.

Top 20. Dang, Uncharted 2 dropped fast. It's so weird, the PS3 fanbase seems to be the only console fanbase in existence that seems to specifically shun exclusives.

Yeah, I am appalled that Uncharted 2 dropped like that. It's a damn shame too. WTF is up with the PS3 audience?!

And I said "WOW" at the DS numbers. GEEZUS.

edit - I think Matt's column affected me more than I thought.

Meh, Uncharted 2 will be fine, it's at 2 million copies sold worldwide.

I haven't even played Uncharted, but if it not selling so great moves developers away from the playable movie "experience" titles than good for us, as far as I'm concerned.

^ I don't think that got in the way of its sales at all though. As for what did, who knows? I honestly don't get the PS3 market. Some claim it's just a Blueray machine, but that doesn't explain why stuff like Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 put up respectable numbers. It's not like games don't sell on it, but 1st party games / exclusives haven't fared too well (outside of established franchises like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Gran Turismo).

Or maybe, in this case, it is simply that by breaking the buff, badass marine as hero mode Sony created a franchise that, while it gets massive praise from gamers, has characters and elements the masses just don't care about. Not that the game is doing terrible, it is edging up to a million sold in the US and seems to be doing well in Europe as well.

Boohoohoo @ everything

Hey come on Panda, we're generally pretty positive around here.

It IS sad that a game like A Boy and His Blob sold so poorly, but really, I think publishers and developers have to realize they aren't Nintendo and their 8-bit franchises died off for a reason (except maybe Mega Man, but then again, he never really died off). As much as I hate saying this, a game like ABAHB probably would have gotten more attention as a WiiWare or DS release. 2D on home consoles seems like something only Nintendo can find a big market for, especially classic (gameplay) 2D. Anyway, I bought the Wii game and would highly recommend it, it's not particularly difficult, but it is polished and unique and charming and clever (at times).

Good numbers for NSMB, I wonder if it can keep up the momentum and sell another million in December? Wouldn't be surprised to see it top the NPD charts next month, although Modern Warfare 2 will still sell close to a million. Uncharted 2, uncharted after 2 months. I'm getting it for Christmas, along with A Boy and His Blob!

I think NSMBW will definitely keep up the pace, that is, provided Nintendo gets enough copies to the stores. Though that probably won't a be problem since Iwata months back predicted it to sell on pace with the DS game, so I'm sure a boatload of copies were produced.

And yeah, it very well could top the charts next month. Both Modern Warfares will probably see a bigger drop than NSMBW, it's just a matter of how much bigger... the 360 version did sell a good 4 million after all, even with a huge drop-off it should sell alright in December. And I don't think there are any December games that can beat it.

Do those DS numbers include both Lite and DSi?

^ Yeah, and PSP #s include the Go, though I don't think anyone is buying the Go.

I'm not sure if it really tapped into the kid market though. Or ANY market. From what I've heard, it sold under 10k, which is atrocious. I'd bet a fair amount of those sales were to older, "old school" gamers who remember the franchise. But I think even many old schoolers find it tough to get that interested in full 2D games on consoles, whereas a $10 WiiWare game... sure. And DS has a much bigger 2D market.

Difficult to say for sure though.

Mind you, I'm not saying *I* want all these games to go to WiiWare. WiiWare is fun for what it is, but the games are almost over before they start. I've purchased three 2D (gameplay) games recently... New Super Mario Brothers Wii, A Boy and His Blob, and LostWinds 2. New Super Mario I have been playing over the course of weeks, ABAHB I just started days ago but am only about 1/4 through after a few sessions, and LostWinds 2 I already finished in a handful of sessions. I love the LostWinds games but it seems like right when they start picking up, they're already done.

I do think NSMBWii will top the NPDs next month. We'll see.

Has Modern Warfare started getting a backlash yet? Everyone bought it, because they have to, but a lot of people don't seem too happy with it.

I actually think that the lion's share of 'gamers' on the PS3 are not Sony fanboys, but 'PlayStation' fanboys. Sony had good games on the PS2, but, with the possible exception of Gran Turismo (which is, ironically, NOT a good game), they weren't the games that sold the system. These guys (who would've been definted as 'casual gamers' last gen) bought the PS3 to play their favorite 'PlayStation' franchises, which happen to mostly be multiplatform, like Madden, GTA, Street Fighter, etc. (Modern Warfare and Assassin's Creed 2 sort of fit the populist mold, as well), without even considering an Xbox 360. I don't think the average PS3 gamer is very discerning. I don't really have much to prove that, besides (quite a bit of) anecdotal evidence (like the guy I just met at Blockbuster who bought a PS3 at launch, but only owns Madden), NPD numbers, and general message board/feedback thread behavior (honestly, PlayStation fans on the net seem, on average, the most reactive, illogical, uneducated, and... just deluded).

That seems kind of harsh, but I dunno... I just calls 'em like I sees 'em.

Hmmmmmmmmmm. We should save the design for the big unveiling when it's all done! I think. That way it impresses everyone in one massive fell swoop. It's like how you don't want to release too much media of your game before it releases, otherwise people play it and go "oh, I already saw all of this..."

I want everyone hyped about the new design at the same time, IE also a time when everything WORKS so they jump into the new features at once. Negative World feature excitement dies faster than erm... Uncharted 2 sales do, in general. ZING. The only way anyone ever does anything around here is when you beat them over the head with it.

Plus too many people screwing around on the test part of the site could make our job more difficult...

Damn, I missed the chance to steal a peak at the new site design!

We keep things tighter than Nintendo up in this beeotch.

Well, maybe not.

No, probably not.

I bet Nintendo makes the same game twice sometimes, they're so secretive.
