62,000 DSi LL's in a week, really? Is this Golden Shower week or whatever it's called in Japan?

Ew.

Even though that's a big number for Japan, it's such a nothingth of what consoles sell in America (NPDs showed the DS at, like, 1.7 MIL for November (holy fuck)). Japan really is kind of an academic curiosity these days (except for the impact of Japanese sales on Japanese development decisions). Then again, the DS is a strange case, because the software seems to sell proportionately better in Japan. Some of it, anyway. I'd like to see an in-depth study. The DS software market always seems really unhealthy to me. A few standouts, and good software, overall, but so many great titles go down in flames.

Yeah but remember November and December are not really the "norm" for NA either, whereas I think what we consider the holiday season isn't that big in Japan. Vgchartz (lol) has Japan at about 20-25% of DS sales, which I guess isn't too bad considering The NA and European markets are growing while Japan is sort of floundering.

It is true that DS games sort of fill up the charts in Japan while here the software sells a ton but the games rarely chart (outside Mario/etc.) It's bizarre actually, I wonder if the software tie ratio is low in NA or it is just spread out among a ton of titles.

Well, that ties in to what I was saying. Decent-selling Japanese games sell a tiny fraction of what decent-selling American (or European, I guess) games do. These days, a game charting in Media Create doesn't necessarily mean much, if anything. The lower end of the Top 30 list is usually in the hundreds. Games that don't even make the Top 20 NPD can still sell far better than games that seem successful from browsing the weekly Media Create sales.

I mean, Japan might have 20-25% of DS sales, but that is, like, THE system over there. Here, it's just The system.

Japan is just a much smaller region. It used to account for a disproportionately large amount of game and console sales (and probably still does, to a lesser degree), but gaming just isn't as big there anymore.

Oh, and also, I think Japan's best period of sales is also around this period. Isn't Golden Week around this time? Too lazy to Google.

Ooooh, Golden Week...

That was an embarassing mistake!

Hasn't it been pretty neck and neck with PSP in Japan all year though? Whereas here it just dominates.

^^^that's just this year though... and even then the DS as still fairly close. I think. Maybe.

I might be wrong on that but I'm too lazy to check right now. Maybe later.

Yeah, the PSP has had a good year in Japan, but 1) the DS is still ahead for the year, I think; 2) the DS is much more healthy for software NOT named Monster Hunter; and 3) handhelds have a much higher profile in modern Japan, in general.

Oh, and I checked. Golden Week (ゴールデンウィーク, Gōruden Wīku) is around May. But I'm pretty sure that Japanese consoles get a boost at Christmas, as well. Just not as big of a boost.
