Good lighting can make bad geometry look good, but good geometry cannot make bad lighting look good.

I was a bit disappointed at first when rumors started suggesting that Nintendo would "only" be building an R700 chip into Cafe, but then I remembered that that line eventually spawned the then-excellent and still formidable HD4890. I loved that card. If they could build a super-customized version of that chip (40nm, replaced non-functional tesselator with dx11 class, 1GB memory (maybe I'm getting a little carried away here...) ), it would run circles around PS3's RSX, let alone the 360's R600 class GPU. Match that would a tri- or (dare I hope?) quad-core chip, and Cafe will be a beast (comparatively speaking).

@EarendilThis is soooo true. But the lighting has to be REALLY good to make you forget about the bad geometry.

I really hope all this is true and the Wii is at least slightly more powerful than the PS3. Which honestly it should be. By the time this thing comes out the PS3 will be 6 years old. If it can run Epic's next engine, that would be huge for 3rd party support.

@OldmanwinterHow great would it be if it was capable of running the next Epic engine (or a previous one), and Nintendo gave Epic the finger when approached for a development kit?

@OldmanwinterNot even the ps4/720 will be able to run Epic's next engine if it requires the power currently used to run it (the next-gen consoles are never going to be more powerful than a triple-GPU set-up in one of the highest-end PC cards). Let's hope they scale that down to reality.

Lol, well I suppose that's one way to look at it. If it can run ports of all the PS3/360 multiplatform games and is powerful enough to run slightly dumbed down ports of PS4/Xbox 3 games then 3rd party support is sure to skyrocket. Which would be a good thing even though I personally don't really support 3rd party multiplatform games on anything other than the PC. casper884 said:@Oldmanwinter

Let's hope they scale that down to reality. I'm no rocket scientist however I'm 100% positive it will run just fine on the next batch of system. Epic isn't dumb, they know what their bread and butter is and they want everyone who can rub two nickels together to be able to buy a dev kit and make games. Just like this gen with the U3 engine. They would be absolute morons to do anything other than try and recreate the U3 engine's success. I'm sure they made an asinine amount of money off of it if the sheer volume of games running on the engine is anything to judge by.

@OldmanwinterSo then you agree that they will scale-down/optimize their engine, right? Because as of right now, the specs require to run it will not be found in ANY of the next-gen consoles.

@casper884I don't think the upcoming Unreal engine is coded to work with current-gen consoles, but instead for the next round of hardware (barring current-gen high-end PCs).

@New FormsBut I'm talking about the next generation of consoles. They're not going to have 3 NVIDIA GTX 580 GPUs in SLI mode, which not even most high-end PC gamers have the luxury of running, and that's what's currently powering their 'next-gen' engine.

Oh, I thought you meant current-gen consoles. Well, I don't know what to tell you about next-gen platforms as it's totally a guessing game at this point in terms of release dates and specs.

@New FormsIt's not a guessing game that the next-generation of home consoles aren't going to outdo high-end PC gaming, it's common sense. Do you really think MS or SONY are gonna charge over $1000 for a home console??!!!

@casper884Haha! I thought a high-spec PC ran $5K these days. It's true. I read it on the internets.

@New FormsI'm talking about the PC's guts, not a full Home Theater PC set-up. EDIT: 3 NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 580's with NO OTHER COMPONENTS costs $1500. We haven't even discussed the RAM, CPU, cooling solutions, power supply, and other components. Not to mention that putting it in a console-sized rig would cause it to explode. So at the very least the console would actually cost over $2000. Not even MS or SONY are crazy enough to release a console with those specs. It would be dead on arrival.

The heat coming out of that system, if you could keep it running, would likely burn down your house.

@missypissyPretty much. A console with those specs would also be able to generate enough wattage to power an entire fucking village.
