Not sure how I feel about this. Excited, yet worried at the same time.

So when Stream or whatever it's eventually called is finally released and not everything is exactly as I hypothesized here, don't be shocked or disappointed. I just wanted to give you a taste of some of the rumblings I've heard, if only to paint a picture of what could be, regardless of how it ultimately takes shape. But I can at least assure you of two things: 1. This is absolutely the direction Nintendo is headed with its next console, and 2. Regardless of whether this all materializes in Project Cafe or in some console or handheld later, the future of social gaming as envisioned by Nintendo is sounding pretty darn exciting.

Absolutely ridiculous madness. I think it WAS written by someone on a forum and then re-posted or something. Nintendo doing that sort of thing? You must be out of your mind, Sam Kennedy.

I did like the end where he said "Don't be disappointed when this doesn't happen, BUT IT TOTALLY WILL HAPPEN", lol. It's fun to speculate on the impossible. Maybe Nintendo will make their next console FREE to anyone who wants it too! Hyuk hyuk hyuk.

Another image of supposed Wii 2 Hardware

K this is the same design as the one we've seen a few times already but with a different color scheme. According to the article it was a different source that sent it in and that this is nowhere near the final build (obviously). I can dig it. I believed it the moment I saw it and I still believe it now.
I could see this thing with a better material and more detail could be the final Cafe design.

Odd how that Jim Reilly guy said it was fake but he's the only source we got who denied it. From what I understand the GAF people said it was fake too based on the extremely flimsy argument that the Nintendo font was incorrect in the original slide images.

Maybe it's a stupid question but how would one fake that Nintendo stamp on the console?

Someone on Gaf mentioned that if Nintendo go with the name Stream, then the spelling might be Striim.

I like it.

@carlosrox

That one is a clear 'shop to me. The lighting is all wrong, unlike the pictures with the black version.

Shit just got real.

You know, I'm starting to think the same thing myself.

From what I'm reading, Nintendo seems like it's going into next-gen with eyes wide open and iron-clad plans to court core gamers. If they can pull it off, it could be the best of all worlds...Nintendo-branded Magic (tm.) in full HD, legitimate 3rd party support (rpgs, racers, shooters, sandbox, etc.), competitive online (though they don't have to best Live to still be successful here), and innovative control.

Cheese and Rice!

When you lump all that together on one console. Man, it kind of takes my breath away.

But here's where things get potentially even cooler. Imagine seeing your friend's game in one of the screens. You click on it, and -- provided you have the game too -- you then seamlessly join his or her game. No waiting until the next match and no buffering to sync up consoles. Just a seamless online experience, exactly as Nintendo would want it. And the beauty of this is that the concept extends to not only new games, but potentially Nintendo's back catalog of classics. Got a friend racing the AI in Super Mario Kart? What if the game was retrofitted so that you could hop right in at any given moment? That, my friends, may well be the promise of Project Cafe.

Ha. Sounds cool, but... yeah. That's definitely NOT gonna happen. Keeping dreaming, Mr. Kennedy.

Eh, I think his point was pretty clear. He basically said: "Remember when you first heard of the VC? Remember how it turned out? Remember when Nintendo talked about WiiConnect 24? Remember how it turned out? Remember when Nintendo revealed online play and level-sharing in SSBB? Remember how it turned out? This is what I've heard about Wii2. Let's see how it will turn out."

Lol, so like crap and a huge disappointment?

It didn't even sound like he heard all of that though. It sounded like he heard bits of it and then was like WELL, THEY COULD TOTALLY DO THIS TOO AND IT'D BE AWESOME!

Which, really, is kind of what is already happening all over the Internet right now, just taken even further. I kind of suspect that Nintendo is going to have something pretty cool come E3... that will still disappoint a lot of people who are expecting something that instantly destroys everything Sony and Microsoft have done.

Yeah I agree a lot of it sounded like pure speculation.

I try not to speculate much on rumors, but what about that rumored front facing camera? Besides mii making and other such games, could it possibly be used for video chat? MarioKart online where you can actually see your friends. Is something like that even technically possible on a console? I apologize in advance if this is stupid, but I'm stupidly drunk at the moment

@helaciouscrumb

That would be possible. Perfect Dark back for the N64 did it, but not in the final game:

wikipedia said:
A feature called "Perfect Head", which appeared in previews of the game but was not included in the final product, was intended to take customisation of multiplayer profiles further. This feature allowed the player to place a photograph of their choice onto their in-game character's face, via a Game Boy Camera combined with the Nintendo 64 Transfer Pak. The images taken would be uploaded to the cartridge and manipulated with a simple image editing program to adjust color and skin tone (as the Game Boy Camera was black and white) and add facial features such as facial hair. This texture could then be saved to either the cartridge or a Controller Pak and then loaded onto a player's character in multiplayer, thus creating a virtual representation of the player.[24][25] Although Rare officially said that the feature was dropped due to "technical issues", it was then revealed that the real reason for the feature's removal was due to "sensitive issues" surrounding the ability to attack images of real people.

It would definitely be possible a decade later. I remember Cassamassina writing about it. Damn that was so long ago.

Like a flux capacitor? The console will travel back in time and Ninterminate the PS1 at birth. The original Xbox too.

Of course the absence of their competitors from the timeline removes the motivation Nintendo had for developing a console with time-travelling capacity in the first place. The resulting paradox will destroy the very fabric of the universe.

NintenDOOMED. Way to go Nintendo.

EDIT: Thanks to the removal of Sony from the timeline, Sega doesn't die. Skies of Arcadia 2 for Dreamcast 2 CONFIRMED.

...then the universe explodes from Nintendo's aformentioned timeline meddling. Oops.

That's not really the same though is it? You were talking more like having a live cam built in while playing games so you can see friend's reactions?

That'd be interesting.

@Zero

Yeah, instead of just having voice chat between friends online, you'd be able to actually see them.

OK I can buy Nintendo letting go of Friend Codes to a system more like Xbox Live where we all have usernames, but being able to see each other, uh hello, this is Nintendo we're talking about, a company that is paranoid of pedophiles and feels the need to parent people's children for them! No way they would take that much of a leap forward; going from super nervous so they make us all a number, straight to, hey look I can see the 12 year old I'm playing against!

Stream sounds too much like Steam, seriously.

They should called it the Revolution. Thats a cool name, don't think anyone thought of that before.
