Via a firmware update which will also include the Browser, and the ability to transfer your DSiWare games over.

That's unfortunate, but like some others said, I'd rather have it this way than have the hardware delayed

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

Yes, unfortunate. I have my 3DS pre-order and I'm excited for it, but it kind of sucks I won't have more to play other than Street Fighter IV.

Yeah, that's pretty lame. Oh well. I'm guessing they decided that they wouldn't be able to meet their target launch. At least that's better than delaying the hardware.

I guess that leaves me a little bit more time than I thought to write that "DSiware games new 3DS owners shouldn't miss" post I had planned...

Hmm, and it's cited at "late May" which means there's a two-month gap between the launch and this firmware update.

I wonder why the delay, though? You would think this kind of thing would be a priority for Nintendo. Get the eShop working at launch... seems like common sense to me. I wonder if Nintendo considered delaying the hardware two months? That way they could have all functionality working, out of the box. I don't think a two-month delay would really hurt hardware sales.

My guess is that their projections didn't line up with the rate in which they were designing the interface and content.

At some point they are going to have to make the call. I'd rather know now that it's delayed until May than 2 days before launch.

Rushed launch is rushed.

I'd go ahead and post it anyway. You could update it at launch if necessary. That way, we could actually start to make a budget early. I know at least two titles that will make that list: Shantae 2 and Dark Void Zero.

Nintendo wants as many units sold as they can possibly pump out. I really don't understand the issue here. Its not as if we won't be getting a shop, after all. Once the shop goes in place, hardware from that point forward can simply have it installed out of the box. This is nothing.

@Deerock69

I think the issue is that many people aren't too impressed with what appears will be the launch games and they were hoping at least the online shop would allow them something to play.

@DrFinkelstein

Agreed... Although I know I have lots of DS games that I have yet to buy/play so I'm not too worried about it. I just want to play the damn thing and see what all this hype is really about. Pre-ordering is still the best way to guarantee a system.. If this thing flys as much as the Wii did people will have trouble finding it.

Agreed. The only launch game I'm exited about is Super Street Fighter IV. And that is a "launch window" game. I was hoping that I would be able to buy Super Mario Land and Link's Awakening at launch or at least be able to transfer my DSi games immediately. I guess I'll play some Pokemon Black and AR games in the mean time (assuming I have the money for the system, which is looking doubtful right now).

I read this a few days ago. Bummer, but at least we know now rather than at launch.

What makes this news worse is the fact that Link's Awakening DX is supposed to be a launch title for the service. Available Day One. I think many of us would at least be content with that if the launch titles didn't spark our fancy.

Not based on the way they have been treating downloadable games so far...

Anyhow, this is kind of sad news to me. Because, frankly, the 3DS launch lineup looks weak, but I still want one at launch. And not owning a DSi, I was planning on using DSiWare to kind of give the platform more value at launch.

Nintendo keeps giving me incentives to not buy a 3DS at launch. Fine by me!

Well there's all kinds of apps that will be there on day 1, including a proper mp3 player (with 3D visualizers!). Face Raiders and AR games are fun. Then there's the whole DS back-catalog, which will benefit from the new OS features.

I'm pretty exited for the system, even though the launch titles are lacking. I just hope Nintendo makes up for it when they open the store in May. Maybe I'll finally finish Link's Awakening.
