The 360 had more than 3 titles in the top 10, I wonder why they did that press announcement and only mentioned 3?

MY ORIGINAL POST:

I'll edit with the numbers once they're out, but a lot of info is slipping early. Apparently Nintendo dominated. Here is some early info:

Xbox 360 sells 1.9M units

The interesting part there is that, including multiconsole, 360 only had 3 of the top 10 games. I doubt Sony had any exclusives, which leaves the remaining 7 slots for Wii/DS games? I wonder which ones, evergreen titles or a few new ones slipping in? We'll see soon enough.

From what I've heard PS3 sold much less than 360. Like, poorly. And Wii sold much more.

It's so weird that 3rd parties are basically abandoning the Wii, because whatever lulls it had, it seems to still be strong on top. I'm not sure if Nintendo will feel much pressure to release a new console anytime soon, even with the 3rd parties essentially gone.

Not sure how this was put together, or how accurate it is, but I found it...

Yaaahhhh for Epic Mickey and DKC Returns!!

And Nintendo pwned another Christmas.

Well the DKCR numbers are certainly up from the previous month, so that's good.

Yeah but in part I also feel this way because I don't see Skyward Sword getting here until Christmas, at which point the Wii may be very much on its way out. And I don't think it is going to sell poorly per se, I just think Zelda may not be one of Nintendo's biggest sellers anymore. In fact, it is almost guaranteed not to be... no way will it touch Mario Kart, New Super Mario Brothers, Wii Fit, Wii Sports Resort... probably won't touch either of the Galaxy games or Mario Party 8 either. I'm not even sure if it will match Twilight Princess sales on Wii (despite those sales being split on Wii/Gamecube...)

Zelda is intuitive as a concept for those who know about it, but it is tough to explain in a 30 second commercial how it is a non-linear quest involving an overworld and dungeons with puzzles/etc.

Hmm, and here is an interesting tidbit:

822 000 PS3 sold in France in 2010 Sony France has revealed sales in France for 2010 : 822 000 PS3 and 8 million PS3 games (+40%). Sony took the opportunity to reveal that the PS3 has sold 50% more than the Xbox 360.

Interesting only in that Sony probably wouldn't be talking about their France sales at all if they had done better elsewhere, heh.

And another random fact:

With regards to the single-SKU chart...

How did Wii Sports do over 3M if there were 2.36M Wii sold in Dec? Wii Sports Resort, NSMB Wii, Mario Kart DS and Mario Party DS make sense if you count bundles.

And...Just Dance 2 > COD BLOPS 360???? Wow.

Edits:
GoldenEye...not there? It did under 200k in December? Ugh.
Kirby > 300k, not bad I guess. But should have done better.
Mario vs DK Miniland Mayhem did very well, but no Layton to be found (though it did come out in September)
Sonic Colors DS > Wii?

Well that chart I posted at the end isn't "official", so it could be way off.

One thing I think it is safe to say... Microsoft has (for now) successfully cracked into the Wii market. Sony has not. Microsoft has Kinect Adventure, Kinect Sports, Dance Central, Kinect Joyride, Kinectimals and Your Shape: Fitness selling while Sony really only has Sports Champions selling.

I hope this is the start of many new DK games!

Looking at these sales I'm almost positive we will see a DKCR 2 at some point, this is probably going to be the best selling Nintendo franchise on Wii without "Mario" or "Wii" in the title (maybe behind Zelda...) Although, like the first Metroid Prime, I think a great deal of the sales are just the fact that it's been so long since a DKC game, and there could be a sales dropoff in a sequel (like Prime 2 and 3.)

This is the conclusion I have come to as well. As long as Kinect continues to have decent support, it should do well. But traditional games will flop on the device, even harder than the most high-profile "hardcore" flops on Wii.

The worrying thing for Sony is that they don't seem to learn. The PSP, Move and the upcoming PSP2 all seem to be designed in the same way. They'll have lukewarm success, and wont be labeled failures, but they wont come close to the market leaders. Like Nintendo 10 years ago, how many devices can they release that make money, but continue to enjoy a smaller and smaller market share? It's a worrying trend for them.

I won a Kinect and 360 bundle on a Coke bottle and I am actually enjoying it. Kinect Adventures is pretty boring but Dance Central is a lot of fun and The Biggest Loser is a great workout game. Lost 8 lbs in weight this week too

2011 woould be a good time for Nintendo to release Fatal Frame 4, Xenoblade, Lost Story and get Namco to release Tales. They would serve as good fillers. Oh yeah and Disaster would be useful too.

It's nice to see DKCR selling well. It shows that good games can sell on Wii without having Mario on the title. One thing you have to do is advertise, however. Then there's the nostalgia factor...

So Goldeneye must have bombed. That sucks, I'm just playing through it now. It's a great shooter by any standards, I'm really enjoying the single player a lot more than I thought I would. Very well done game.

The apparent success of Epic Mickey is another data point in the counter-argument against "The Wii can't sell third-party games." Michael Jackson and Just Dance and uDraw are more asterisked points (all from Ubi?). But no one of importance will point that out in any highly-publicized way. WHATEVS.

Where the hell did you get that list?

Also, I don't feel like GoldenEye actually bombed. I'd like to see some hard numbers. It had to have handily beat Bloodstone, at least.

@anandxxx
I agree with you in that I won't wright off GE as a bomb just yet. I think this one will remain a slow burner for a while.

Is it even a slow-burner? Anecdotal observations can be misleading, but I witnessed many empty shelves post-release. Maybe the initial shipments were small...

Holy shit, those Just Dance games are selling like 4-5 million copies (LTD)?! I knew they were big, but I didn't realize they were that big.

So glad DKCR is selling well. Amazing game. And even though I hate Epic Mickey, I'm actually glad a core, third party Wii game is selling, so I can't really complain.

It's amazing; as great as the 360 and Kincect are doing, Wii still sold half a million more units. Very impressive.

@Orbital74
I think a 500 million dollar marketing blitz is really doing an effective job mudding up the waters as to how well Kinect is actually doing. This peripheral is the fad that they claimed the Wii to be for the last five years, but this time it is for real. They will not be able to sustain it.

EDIT- And yes, I too witnessed many empty shelves in regards to GE; it does not have the trappings of a 'flop'.

@Simbabbad
We'll just have to agree to disagree on that. It will not, as you have pointed out, be sustainable. But hey, it will be a mighty successful, half a billion dollar advertising budget peripheral. Nobody will care about it when the 3DS launches, though. That thing will pull the wind out of their sales (and put a pretty huge dent in everybody's gaming budget) like nothing else.

The way I look at 2010...just look at how much money Microsoft poured into re-branding and re-imaging their tired old console, and what did it net them in the end? Second place. Same as always. That was their last gasp for this system.
