@anandxxx

Yeah, the 8 gig Touch is $225. Should be enough for lots of games and music.

@anandxxx

I probably have a bias against iPhone gaming despite my best efforts not to. All I played on one are that crappy kart racer I mentioned and Angry Birds, which I wasn't impressed with either. Then again maybe it's simply because I sucked at it.

I can't think of a valid reason why I'd enjoy something like Trajectile and not Angry Birds, when they're sort of similar except the latter is better-looking and more charming. Must be bias.

Anyway, I cannot think of 10 games I'd actually want to buy an iTouch for. Even Infinity Blade which has been described as similar to Punch-Out!! All I can think of when I see it is "Grinding: exactly what PO!! needed" while rolling my eyes; or when looking at video reviews: "So these dudes complain of Wii waggling all the time, but the equivalent on an iPhone is not a problem as long as it's got UE3 graphics!?".

I know you have this gift certificate and all, but... if you're craving a new GnG that much, wouldn't a PSP be a much better purchase for you?

Sort of. It definitely has more games that I want. But I feel like this would be a really stupid time to buy an OG PSP. Sony is all over the place, but the PSP2 has to be imminent. And I'm pretty familiar with PSP-type games. Getting an iTouch would allow me to access a different dimension of gaming.

Also, it's not like I have a Sony Gift Card. And there are TWO GnG games on the iPhone, I believe (har har).

As far as Trajectile and Angry Birds, they are similar. (Spotto is kind of similar, as well.) Angry Birds seems like a much more limited, tiny version of the concept. I mean, it was decent. I just don't see it (or Trajectile, for that matter) as any kind of game-changer. Aura-Aura Climber, on the other hand...

I think you could probably find 10 iTouch games just in the point-and-click adventure category, right? (ScummVM?)

The lack of buttons and a pad does bother me. If I wasn't so fucking lazy, I'd probably just liquidate the Gift Card on eBay or the Amazon Marketplace. I might just do that. But I need a good portable media player/recorder solution as well, so there's that.

I guess I feel that if the iPhone / phones in general had any killer games, gamers would be talking about them all over the place. And yet I never hear anything, even from iPhone owning gamers, other than a couple of half-hearted comments about a game here or a game there. You can tell when the hype is there and when it isn't, and people just aren't getting that excited over any specific iPhone games. Sure 8 billion people are buying Angry Birds, but is it a must play game for gamers?

Ok, I realize it is a different platform, it is more tuned to casual gaming. Fine. But DS (and even PSP sometimes) has a ton of amazing casual games in addition to the big gamer games. I can't get too excited about a "platform" that is severely lacking in anything but pick up and play games. This is part of why some people disliked the Wii, except you know... the Wii has a ton of awesome gamer games. Not to mention that even with pick up and play games, I'm not sure if the iPhone has any original games that can match the best stuff on gaming consoles/handhelds. Does it have (its own) World of Goo, Fluidity, Art Style, BIT.TRIP, etc.? I know it gets some of those games, but does it have any that originate on the platform?

I'm sure it has a lot of games that are worth playing. But it doesn't seem like it has any "must play" games. I'm barely interested in the PSP, I'm very not interested in the iPhone. Wake me up when it gets an exclusive like 999 or something. Zenonia doesn't quite cut it.

What if 999 gets ported to it for $0.99?

I just downloaded a demo onto my DS, but from what I've read, it doesn't seem like the same one. I'll be day one'ing this for sure. Looks great. Love the art style.

@anandxxx Then it'll be the same game I already played releasing months later.

Besides, does that REALLY happen all that often? Like, how much was Chinatown Wars on debut on iPhone? Or Phoenix Wright (it had Phoenix Wright, correct?) I don't imagine many of the big name games release for $1. Maybe on some insane, rare sales. Either way it is tough to get too excited about a platform where the best games are ports of games I could have played elsewhere, whatever the pricing.

They don't release at a dollar, but they are often discounted.

You can also throw in stuff like the Monkey Island remakes.

Keep in mind, I am nothing near an App Store expert, so I can't really be expected to mount a proper defense here. Someone want to take over?

Yeah but the Monkey Island remakes aren't full priced platform games like GTA CTW and Phoenix Wright were. I can already get them on PSN for $5 or $10 or something like that, can't imagine iPhone has a much greater advantage there.

Then again, you can get PW on WiiWare now for cheap.

A bargain at ten times the price?

Are all the PW games even on the iPhone? Why am I defending the iPhone??

Well, you're again assuming these Monkey Island remakes are $1 on iPhone. Are they? I have no idea.

I'm also not sure if PW is on iPhone, I heard rumblings about it, not sure if it happened.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney has been on the App Store for months. A couple months back, it was on sale for a dollar. That's a pretty good deal, considering the WiiWare version is $11 ($10 for the main game, $1 for the fifth case).
