One of the Wii's standout shooters – and certainly its most explicit – could be due a revival as reports hit that House of the Dead: Overkill 2 is in development.
Launched at the start of 2009, the original House of the Dead: Overkill was a tongue-in-cheek take on SEGA's long-running on-rails series that channelled the spirit of classic exploitation flicks, creating a game that's still near-unique on Nintendo's console.
Now Nintendolife is reporting that a sequel is in the works and is heading for release in the middle of 2011. Perhaps SEGA and developer Headstrong Games are looking to steal the sweary crown from Mafia II, a game that recently outdid House of the Dead: Overkill in the profanity stakes.
At the time of writing there was no-one available for comment at SEGA.
The first game was a fun rail-shooter that I feel did justice to the arcade games of old. (even if the profanity was turned up to 11) I'm not sure I really want yet ANOTHER game in this genre for Wii, but... what say you?
Huh... I liked Overkill quite a lot for the $10 or whatever I paid for it, but I'd rather see what else these guys can do than another lightgun shooter.
Was hoping Sega would trust them with another franchise revival.
Overkill was a pretty enjoyable experience. I'd be down for another. I probably wouldn't pay more than $20 for it though, which is what I paid for the last game.
Well said. I'd be upset about not giving them another franchise if their efforts with HotD (which NEEDED a new take) just wasn't so mutha' fuckin' satisfying!
Watch it release as a Move exclusive or something.
I seriously have no doubts about that. Looking at the Playstation Move's catalog, I'm sure it'll make it's way over there to get people more interested in buying it.
Ha, no kidding. Although I doubt it'd be an exclusive. But it'd be a cross-platform game with the Wii release. But the Move version will not only have those shiny "HD GRAFIX" but also exclusive content.
Can't remember the name of the development studio that pitched that idea to SEGA, but it may have been these guys. SIGH, indeed. Why can't we get another entry in this series? I mean for crying out loud, we got a sequel to NiGHTS, which I think wasn't as successful as Jet Set Radio Future was.
But they'll have to really nail the sequel for me to buy it.
-Better Weapon balance -Increased difficulty in co-op -No framerate hitches -Option to bleep cursing -More content if they go with a $50 price tag
First of all, yes I am replying to myself because I was being unreasonable.
HotD:O was a great game, with absolutely fantastic presentation. The music, the dialogue and the voice acting were pitch perfect. It's such a unique game in that respect, and for that reason alone it should be in everyone's Wii collection. Extraction was arguably a better game, but I will always remember Overkill more fondly. If Headstrong make this for Move and Wii, then hopefully they can raise the budget further and really expand on the gameplay.
I thought Overkill was inferior to its predecessors and suffered from far too many glitches and technical shortcomings. Plus the whole over-the-top cursing got old pretty fast.
I loved the original Overkill, so I'm definitely down for a sequel. I've always thought it would be hilarious if they had an "edited for TV" mode. There would be really bad over dubs to cover the swears.
I just wish I had someone to play the game with. I keep wanting to buy a second nyko gun, but I don't think my wife would be that interested in this type of game.
I have House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return, and that's about all I need when it comes to on-rails shooting. The Wii does not need another on-rails shooter of all things.
