Top 50 Songs on Nintendo Consoles (now with links!)

This is a list me and my friend made together that represents our consensus on the top 50 songs ever to first appear on a Nintendo console (or maybe arcade for some of them) That means no songs that later appeared in compilations like Sonic songs (otherwise Green Hill Zone would be very high). My niece was working on You Tube countdown videos, but I think she got busy with drama camp or something so they've been put on indefinite hold (I have no video making programs or skills). Anyway on to the list!

50. Double Dragon - Title Theme
49. Yoshi's Story - Yoshi's Story
48. Ninja Gaiden 2- Chaosium Sword
47. Metroid Prime - Credits

Since this was done with a friend I don't agree exactly with the placement of every song and there's some songs I wouldn't personally have and some omissions but such is the nature of collaboration. Still a damned good list and I listen to it as a playlist often. I have all of them on MP3 so if you want any of them, let me know your email and I'll be happy to oblige.

I didn't read the whole thing yet, but some nice choices. Yoshi's Story has some of the catchiest tunes of the last three generations. So weird, tuneful, and gay.

Isn't it weird that the term for homosexual is a homonym for happy? Especially since homosexual people were often historically portrayed as dangerous and violent. Although I guess that term hasn't been in use for that long...

Looked it up on good ol' Wikipedia - "The term gay (ɡeɪ) was originally used, until well into the mid-20th century, primarily to refer to feelings of being "carefree", "happy", or "bright and showy"; it had also come to acquire some connotations of "immorality" as early as 1637.[1]

The term later began to be used in reference to homosexuality, in particular, from the early 20th century, a usage that may have dated prior to the 19th century.[1] In modern English, gay has come to be used as an adjective, and occasionally as a noun, that refers to the people, practices, and culture associated with homosexuality. By the end of the 20th century the word gay was recommended by major style guides to describe people attracted to members of the same sex.[2][3] At about the same time, a new, pejorative use was visible in some parts of the world."

Haha, homonym.

As long as people are epically bumping...

I should find YouTube links for these, or make a playlist or something, but I've been too lazy.

I couldn't help but remember this song when you guys mentioned Yoshi's Story:

Yo-Yo-Yoshi!

Pretty good list. Personally, I'd have a lot more Galaxy, Galaxy 2, and FF3 on there, but I definitely enjoy all the music listed.

The crazy thing is that I think I know every single one of those (although I seem to have forgotten Double Dragon's title screen).

Mon Dieu!

The Double Dragon title screen music used to be stuck in my head 24/7 when I was a kid.
You must look it up!

@roykoopa64
My sister used to insist that song said "Paul took the pool cue to his balls." It made me sad.

Ouch!
Those lyrics, phonetically, fit surprisingly well, haha.

No Chrono Trigger? What the hell?

Also, which Tetris Type A do you mean? The one on the NES is from The Nutcracker while the Game Boy one is that Russian folk song. In both cases, the songs did not first appear on a Nintendo console.

Hmm. Still, some great choices on there. Though personally for Mario Kart 64 I'd put the end credits in front of Rainbow Road. So awesome. I even did a remake of it once! Not my best work, I kind of never got to polishing it up due to losing all of the files related to it when my own computer died and my backup drive mysteriously had everything but that song on it...

@TriforceBun

Well, Galaxy 2 didn't exist when I made this list. And I hadn't played FF3 yet. Terra's Theme would definitely be on there now. So would this:

@canonj

I've never played Chrono Trigger. Obviously I'm not gonna put music from games I haven't played yet.

And the Gameboy version. Even it's a Russian folk song, that 8 bit version appeared first on a Nintendo console (as far as I know).

But it's just a best song list, you can go listen to the songs! Mind you, obviously there is a bunch of context involved so usually our favorite songs are from games we have played. There are exceptions though. Two of my favorite video game songs are from Tetris Attack and Mario Tennis (GBA), neither of which I have ever played.

Chrono Trigger though, I have played. And the music is awesome. I'd probably include like 5 songs from that game in a top 50 list. Here is one of the best:

There seems to be a bigger issue here though. Which is... WHY THE HELL HAVE YOU NOT PLAYED CHRONO TRIGGER?

@Zero

I'm not gonna listen to Chrono Trigger songs! That would make the game less amazing when I finally play it!

I haven't played it because I was waiting for it to come out on VC and it was gonna be my next VC game I bought, but then I got Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest for Christmas, so I want to beat that first. No rush though, everyone seems to think it's timeless.

No results.

List invalidated.

It's also missing the Prime 1 and 3 menu music.
