@Kal-El814 That is strange, because those have puzzles and the djinni system and other such things. Mystic Quest is really, really basic.

@carlosrox Well I played it at 15 or 16 or so? and I definitely still enjoyed it, it's not a bad game, it's just very basic. It's like if you strip all the complexity out of the Final Fantasy series but still keep a lot of the good elements (graphics, music, etc.) I remember being a bit disappointed, but only because I didn't know what I was getting into and thought it was a main Final Fantasy game.

Haha at first I didn't recognize the scene at all but then remembered it when he opened the pod. Yeah I've seen that (on the DVD I guess?) before but it doesn't make the movie any less tragic to me. Seth Brundle had nothing but good intentions and let his imagination get the best of him. It's a completely tragic tale. He was truly creating something that would change the world and it ended in a complete disaster. I love stories like that. Also, you have to feel for Gina Davis after blowing off her lover's head at the end of the movie. What happened to him wasn't exactly his fault either. He turned into a monster physically and mentally but it was mainly due to the corruption of being this man-fly. His attitude changed nearly overnight, none of it was really his doing. He basically went insane. He was acting out of sheer desperation towards the end of the movie.

I don't remember the second half of that deleted scene though...Either way I love The Fly and The Fly II (which I'm sure most hate). The ending to The Fly II is incredible.

I've always had a a soft spot for Mystic Quest. It was my primary entertainment during a tough time in my life. Plus that Doom Castle music is awesome.

@Zero
Understandable. I took it as a side quest though and enjoyed it as such. It was kinda an FF game for younger kids but hey I was a young kid so that might explain a bit of my love for it.

@Simbabbad
I can see that. I guess Brundle just lost his mind pretty early on and felt pretty hopeless after he spent some time locked up there by himself. He became demented pretty quickly and learning he was gonna have a baby that would be terminated just pushed him over the edge. I mean, he even asks her to reconsider since it might be the only regular trace of Seth Brundle around. That in itself would have been heartbreaking to any regular man but he's basically acting on very hyperbolic emotions later on. He didn't seem too bummed out later but again I think that's dementia kicking in. I think the final transformation was more of a "this fly has really been here this whole time and now it reveals itself once the shell dies" kinda thing. I agree it's quick but I think it worked. I also love how Brundlefly fused with the telepod itself, creating a twisted freak with wires and pipes sticking out of him.

Argh. Stupid censors. Regardless of how that scene makes people feel about the character it's very well done and does tell you a lot about Brundlefly. Cool that you appreciate The Fly II. I've always loved the ending too. Sick, sick irony.That building in the beginning is SFU, a large university here in BC Also, War Of The Worlds had some scenes filmed there too!

Wasn't Super Meat Boy supposed to hit WiiWare this week?!

Sometime this year.

Good week? That's... unheard of lately.

FFMQ wasn't horrible at all. BUT... it's pretty much a "starter" JRPG. Pretty easy game. I played it after playing FF4 and had no real trouble with it as a kid.

I may however, buy this for the nostalgia alone. It's been a long, long time since I played it.

The Fly is such a traumatic movie to see as a child, I imagine any game would make you feel better, no matter how awful.

@HiredN00bs
It nothing to do with my enjoyment of the game though. I was just pointing out how depressing The Fly was. It reminds me of the first time I saw Texas Chainsaw Massacre and being completely immersed in that world. Right when the movie was over I definitely felt disturbed even by the (happy?) ending. I remember turning off the movie and seeing the Channel Listings and being smacked back to "reality". I was so engrossed and it was refreshing to leave that fucked up world. I was a kid when I saw that and a kid when I saw most fucked up horror movies. I'm no stranger to traumatic viewing experiences as a kid That's irresponsible parents for you!

I think the most scarring childhood movie for me was The Elephant Man*. So bizarre and sad. I didn't realize it was Lynch for the longest time.

*Also, Friday the 13th.

I was scared by the robot lady in Superman 3 as a kid, so let's just say I stayed clear of actual horror movies.

@anandxxx
I think Lynch is pretentious but I do like a few of his movies. The only movie of his I've seen in it's entirety from start to finish was Elephant Man and I loved it. I've liked what I've seen from Mulholland Drive...Inland Empire looks pretty good...and Lost Highway would appeal to me more if it wasn't so all over the place. I've seen lots of scenes (many times) from the latter 3 though.

I also didn't know Elephant Man was Lynch either until a few years ago. Then again, I never really saw much of the movie until a few years ago but I was very aware of it. I actually mighta seen it when I was a kid but I remember nothing.

The most scarring movie of all time (and I do mean scarring) for me was Jacob's Ladder. I swear that movie scared me stupid for years. More like a DECADE. Serious. I was afraid of the dark and sleeping without covers over my head for years as a kid. And even into my mid-late teens to an extent. That movie literally scarred me. I'd consider myself jaded but I still get shit scared of movies like Paranormal Activity. I had (have) a very active imagination and watching stuff like that just messed me up big time. Every shot of the demons in Jacob's Ladder traumatized me. I can't believe I sat through the whole thing. Not only that but I watched it numerous times. I didn't hate the movie for scaring me stupid, I loved it. I just didn't love it when I had to sleep at night. Every now and then I can still think of certain shots at night and get a little creeped out.

Paranormal Activity is the new movie that scares me though, in fact just this morning I was a lil creeped out in bed thinking of someone standing at the foot of my bed for hours completely motionless... This creeps me out more because it COULD be real...

Why'd I have to mention The Fly in this topic...

Bumping this crazy thread.

I heard Jeremy Parish say in the latest Retronauts podcast that Mystic Quest was made by the same team as Final Fantasy Legend III on the Game Boy. That was enough to pique my interest. FFLIII was never my favorite Game Boy FF title, but I still loved it.

That said, it wasn't a "My First RPG", it was actually pretty challenging.

Still, do you think I'd enjoy Mystic Quest? Doesn't it have any redeeming qualities? How long does it take to get through?

@Guillaume

It has one heck of an amazing soundtrack, that's for sure.

But I really don't remember the game much. I know I enjoyed it a lot as a kid so most of that is probably nostalgia speaking...

It's all SaGa stuff that was rebranded for the West, right? The SaGa series has a strange, rocky history.

What do you think of the new Retronauts Live format?

@Anand

Yep, SaGa stuff. I've only ever played II and III on the Game Boy. Apparently the PS2 remake of one of the earlier SaGa games is pretty good, I should try to find it.

FFLII (SaGa 2) was just... well it was my first RPG. It has a special place in my heart. But I genuinely think it was a very cool, very weird game, with a whole bunch of unforgettable moments. The deserted giant town...

Retronauts Live is alright. I dunno. Maybe one day I'll call. Now that I'm actually planning/recording a podcast, I kind of understand where Parish is coming from, not wanting to deal with having to find guests and stuff.

@Guillaume

I just wanted to pop in and say that my favorite Gameboy "Final Fantasy" was the third one. Time-traveling RPGs FTW! I hope these show up on 3DS's Virtual Console thingy.

I never played Mystic Quest, so I unfortunately can't help you there.
