Bioware on the Wii, at last... but it's not what you think.

Before the first Wiiware port Interplay announced, Decent, has even come out, the publisher has gone ahead and just announced MDK2 is coming to the service as well.

Seems incredible to me. How's it gonna fit inside the 40 MB file size limit?

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

Despite being a huge Dreamcast fan back in the day, this is a title I never got around to.

To those that played it, will the Wii benefit it in any manner and do you think its gameplay and design will still hold up?

I'd love to be able to answer your question, but that would mean actually playing the PS2 version I've had laying around for years...

It's a third person shooter, though, so already the advantages of the Wiimote are evident for this genre and have already been demonstrated.

True... WiiWare pricing is also enticing.

Never heard of the game, but it was pissing me off that that IGN article failed to say what MDK stood for. So I looked it up and apparently it stands for MDK. How exciting!

It stands for Max, Dr. Fluke Hawkins, and Kurt Hectic*, the game's protagonists. Easily my favorite Dreamcast game and the sole reason I fucking hate BioWare for only making RPGs these day

But seriously, I have no idea how this is going to fit on WiiWare.

The game is simultaneously extremely bad ass and hilarious, kind of like Earthworm Jim, which isn't surprising seeing as the first game was made by Shiny.

*At least that's the only thing that makes sense.

This will be a fantastic fit with the Wiimote. And for anybody that knows anything about the industry, BIoware peaked with MDK 2. O_o

A Dreamcast game for WiiWare? I like where this is going...

... of course I won't be satisfied until we get some damn Saturn games....

A third-person shooter for Wii! It's a port, but considering how rare even ports of third-person shooters are on the system, I definitely want to check this out.

MDK2 is one of the best run and gun 3rd person shooters ever made.

That said I enjoyed, and brace yourself fellas because I'm about to drop a SHOCKER, the PC version more. Beyond the mouse, which makes a big difference over a gamepad, the save anywhere feature made this game a lot less maddening. Why you ask? Because on the Dreamcast and I assume PS2 this game was fucking difficult. Sure a quick save may have infuriated the purists, however for me who isn't the Bobby Fisher of gaming I found it to be a welcome addition.

All that said just buy the PC version. It's cheap and it looks and controls better.

MDK2 was fun, but man was it hard. Great game.

Well, it's something. I doubt we will ever see a disk game from them, but who knows? Doesn't EA own them now? EA seems to like the Wii.

@Oldmanwinter
Here's another shocker. I've only played it on the PC, as well.

Great game. I kind of wish the whole thing was just the glide-y guy, though. The dog is alright, but the doctor stuff wasn't that great.

I don't know how they're going to fit it. What a weird decision. I'd rather whoever published it just did a collection on a disc.

I played it originally on the Dreamcast and quit about 3/4 of the way through because I got so infuriated. The PC version though with the quick save and mouse aiming made it a cakewalk in comparison.

And I agree. Kurt was by far the most fun to play with. The dog was second and the scientist 3rd. I actually really liked some of the dogs parts. And the sense of humor, art and sound were great too.

Further some of the boss battles were pretty epic:

This sounds scarily like a modern Sonic game to me. Say, Adventure Battle 2. Great game. I kind of wish the whole thing was just Sonic, though. Tales is alright, but the Knuckles stuff wasn't that great.

Well, except that Adventure Battle 2 wasn't a "great" game either, merely a competent one.

All of MDK2 is good. The thing is the parachute deal Kurt has lends itself to really awesome gameplay mechanics that were incorporated well into the levels. A lot of them have a tremendous sense of verticality (pretty sure that isn't a word but I'm going McCarthy on your ass) which is awesome. Flying up on drafts or fans or whatever and fighting on platforms (it's way more exciting that that last sentence would lead you to believe) is just tremendous white knuckle fun.

The dog, Max I believe his name was were pretty much straight up 3rd person run and gun parts. Which while fun the levels especially by today's standards were pretty bland. Then the scientist levels were kind of a mash up of different gameplay concepts.

I'd love it if Bioware did MDK3 with just Kurt. On a modern engine it could seriously be amazing. Hell the game still looks great and it's almost ten years old.

Wasn't MDK 1 just the glide-y guy? With an emphasis on sniping? I don't remember it that well.

Also, BioWare gets too much credit for MDK. It was a very fun game, but the Shiny original was very fun, as well.

Was it even competent, though?

I remember renting a Dreamcast at launch, trying out the widely praised Sonic Adventure, and thinking, "WTF is this shit?" Power Stone was a revelation, though. I wouldn't say any of the three characters in MDK2 were BAD. It's just that the glide-y stuff was more fun. The dog parts were still cool (if BALLS hard), because you could attach different guns to all six of his limbs, I think? The scientist puzzle levels were neat in concept, but not much fun in practice.

Wow, MDK2. On WiiWare? Craziness.

I can confirm what others have said... that game is freakin' hard. (at least, it was for me on Dreamcast)

@anandxxx Well, I guess I consider a game competent when I would rather play it than do nothing. And I played a fair amount of Sonic Adventure Battle 2, so it was competent.

Mediocre, yet competent.

This port is not dead, apparently! It's releasing on May 4th. Almost one year later.

I'm glad because the controls in the PS2 version turned out to be so poor, it's unplayable. Or at least, I'm not willing to play it.

Nice I've been wondering when this would come.
