Woah, could the 3DS be more powerful than the Wii?!?

That's what Craig suggests in this feature.

How powerful is the 3DS?
Nintendo has not revealed any specs for the 3DS system, but expect it to well surpass the Nintendo DS in visual and processor capabilities. To provide stereoscopic 3D effects the system must have the ability to render each game field twice, one for each of the player's eyes, a technique that will require significant horsepower to produce.

Several developers that have experienced 3DS in its current form have reported, off the record, that it has processing capabilities that far exceed the Nintendo Wii and bring the device with abilities that are close to HD consoles such as PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

According to several developer sources, the 3DS device is not using the NVIDIA Tegra mobile chipset, a rumor that's been floating around since 2009.

Crazy if true.

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

That'd be a hell of a leap for a handheld given Nintendo's history (skipping Gamecube and going for more powerful than Wii). Maybe to keep in line with the PSP2 (whatever the hell that thing is gonna pack).

Sooo....the only thing that the Wii will have that the 3DS won't have is motion control sensing capabilities?

I don't care. I'm still not buying one for a good long while.

@bpumpkin777

Unless the stylus has motion control

Seriously, I hope this is true for what it says about the next Wii as much as for what it says about the DS.

Yeah, you only say that until some uber killer app is released like a week after it comes out, then you'll break down. BREAK DOWN LIKE A LITTLE BITCH!

:p I kid, I kid!

Developers say a lot of things.

[edit] man this form needs autolinks.

So if iPhone > Wii and 3DS > Wii than 3DS = iPhone!?

It would have to be a really, really good game. I'm sick of Nintendo releasing new handheld hardware every 12 months. I'll wait for the 3DSXXLLiiiii Lite or whatever.

I hope this is true. It would bode very well for the power of Wii's successor.

Your problem is you worry about what you don't have instead of what you do. The DS Lite is fine!

Please be fuckin' true, cuz if fuckin' true that all but confirms Wii 2 will be insane. Nintendo's got everything cept online and great tech with the Wii. Make it happen, Nintendo. Make it happen and you will own all markets, I firmly believe.

People go apeshit over Mario Galaxy 2 as it is, now imagine if that same game looked like Ratatouille. The world would collapse.

Don't forget, I think you do need some extra processing power to be able to render in 3D (the depth kind...), so some of that power might be reserved for that. So even if it is more processing power than the Wii, it doesn't mean that all games will look better than (good-looking) games on Wii.

If this rumour is true.

That would be nice, but I care most about what games will be on it. No matter if it's Nintendo or anyone else, really powerful hardware on its own doesn't excite me.

I'm not sure if I buy PS3/360 level processing, but who knows? Still, since it essentially has to process everything twice, wouldn't that still mean effectively the graphics/etc. wouldn't be near the level they would be with the same power focusing on just once?

@Zero If that turns out to be the case (which I think it will), then I'm sure people who first heard this annoucement will be really disappointed, and Nintendo's name will be dragged down for another five years

Good point, Zero.

Even if that's true, if they can affordably put that level of chip into a handheld, they can definitely put a superior one into their next console and still make a profit.

Well typically it brings down the graphical prowess only when the framerate cannot be met. Generally you'd want it to be at least 30 per image, so 60 total. Low framerate games + 3D do not work very well.

I know it is! That's my point. I was at GameStop yesterday and I got a look at my first DSi XL, and honestly I wasn't that impressed. They had a normal DSi right next to it to compare and I thought the DSi's screen looked better. The XL's screen didn't look bad by any stretch, but I noticed on games like Mario Kart, the graphical imperfections were a little more apparent.

I'd be interested to know what the cost of the 3DS will be...because that will tell me what kind of tech they are actually using..

For instance, the new 3D TV's that are now out, some of them need very expensive glasses (over $100 a pair) for you to see the effect without losing any resolution.

If you go to the movies though and see, say, Avatar or Toy Story 3 in 3D, you get the cheap ass glasses (also used for cheaper 3D TV's) and you lose resolution because each eye is only seeing half a pixel... The movies just are not as clear...

So..the 3DS could have awesome tech to display 3D on a handheld but you lose out on some resolution (even though the tech is better then Wii's) or...they just blow our minds with great tech and great picture... and our pokets will forever have moths in them..
