Dragon Quest X announced for the Wii

DAMN this is HUGE, Dragon Quest sells like a billion copies over there. VIII on PS2 was one of my favorite RPGs of the generation, so if X is as good I'm definitely in line.

Also it seems like Dragon Quest IX (DS) is releasing in Japan in March. I'm still pretty excited for that, though it kind of sounds like they changed things up a bit there so I'm not quite as sure about it. Not to mention the X announcement sort of... overshadows IX?

Anyway things are really picking up on the RPG front it seems. First Monster Hunter (which in case you saw the rumours, Capcom has now posted on their page that it is indeed still Wii exclusive,) then the "real" Tales team working on the Wii announcement at the Nintendo Fall Conference (this happened right? or did I imagine it?) and now Dragon Quest!

Hmm, and now the question in my mind is... where will the inevitable Kingdom Hearts 3 end up? I don't really care about that one as much personally, as I wasn't a fan of the first, but still. It seems like a great fit for the Wii market and Dragon Quest X shows SE has some faith in the Wii, but the combined PS360 market is still a tough one to beat, and Kingdom Hearts is also a franchise with a huge US appeal, so it isn't as straight-forward as simply ignoring the 360.

Pretty cool, I just wish they would fire the Dragonball Z artist and get a new style for the game. Sorry, I am not a huge fan of anime, (at least not mainstream anime).

You know, I thought I was going to hate the style for VIII, actually it kept me away from buying it for awhile. But eventually I bought it and loved everything about it.

It's not a bad style so much as Dragonball Z is a terribly stupid and boring show, so anything remotely connected to it makes me hesitant. But it's a lot different when you get the style in the context of an enjoyable piece of entertainment.

That's an excellent point. I'm letting my distaste for DBZ taint my view of anything that looks like it.

Sage advice, my friend!

If you ever read the first Dragonball manga, you'd probably appreciate Toriyama's style. The early stories were a lot more based in folklore, they were fantastical and charming - which is kind of the deal with Dragon Quest too.

And who hates Chrono Trigger's character design? Only sharks and perverts, that's who!

Hmm, at least you are a shark and not a pervert, else something else might be hiding under that jacket.

Ok, I know it is April Fool's and all but apparently this is legit. And... basically all it does is confirm that A. it is still coming to Wii B. it is almost done but C. it's probably not coming out until 2012.

Nintendo Power: Do you see any advantages to making Dragon Quest on a home console again?

Yuji Horii: The next Dragon Quest game, Dragon Quest X, will actually be released on Wii. I feel that some users will want to play Dragon Quest on the big screen, which is why we are working toward releasing it on Wii. Of course, in the future we might develop on handhelds again, so it's really a case-by-case basis. It all depends on what the customer wants at that time. Something else we hear is that players want a new Dragon Quest that follows the same system of Dragon Quest VIII, so that's something else we're taking into consideration while in development for a Dragon Quest on Wii.

Nintendo Power: Is development on Dragon Quest X proceeding smoothly?

Yuji Horii: All we can say is that development is going well and we're on the last parts of the game. We can't really share much else at this point, but by the end of this year we should be able to announce something regarding it.

Sounds good; it's better to have at least one game to look forward to in 2012 than nothing.

I so confused why anyone doubts that the game will come to Wii. It's been confirmed numerous times, and never was hinted at going to any other hardware. Why is everyone so nervous? Sure, there hasn't been a lot of news, but it's not like we got updates and press releases all the time when DragonQuest IX was in development for nearly five years.

I wasn't aware that people were unsure of its status on the Wii. I think it's just nice to have it reaffirmed.

I've never actually played a DQ game, but this is great news. Wii sales in Japan are going to go insane in 2012.

@GameDadGrant Because it was announced years ago and not even a single detail has been made known. It was often assumed that, despite being announced, it wasn't actually in development while IX was, hence no details. So... that and the fact that DQ IX sold like 8 trillion copies on DS made people think maybe they just decided to switch it over to handhelds.

There's nothing I like more than the announcement of an announcement.

Well, the bump was more an interview. In the latest Nintendo Power? Which means maybe my copy will come today?!!!?

Another interesting thing is the fact that Kingdom Hearts 3 never came. Sure they did all kinds of spinoffs and such on handhelds, but a true Kingdom Hearts 3 simply never made it. Which isn't to say it's not in development, but still... surprised that this generation is closing out (at least in traditional terms) and we haven't seen such an obvious game.

I'm not even 100% certain I will have a Wii by the time that game launches. I'm gauging how long I could keep my Wii before selling for as much as I can get for it right now. Its a delicate balance.

There are still some other games coming man! Zelda, Xenoblade (maybe), this... probably The Last Story. Um... Kirby and erm, Rhythm Heaven. Maybe something else.

Don't sell yet! At least wait until E3 and see what else is in store.

It probably won't come to the US... everyone knows we don't like RPGs

You mean the game that never actually existed in any reasonable form, ever?
