I guess it's legit...

Nintendo Co., Ltd. (Minami-ward of Kyoto-city, President Satoru Iwata) will launch "Nintendo 3DS"(temp) during the fiscal year ending March 2011, on which games can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses.

"Nintendo 3DS"(temp) is going to be the new portable game machine to succeed "Nintendo DS series", whose cumulative consolidated sales from Nintendo amounted to 125million units as of the end of December 2009, and will include backward compatibility so that the software for Nintendo DS series, including the ones for Nintendo DSi, can also be enjoyed.

We are planning to announce additional details at E3 show, which is scheduled to be held from June 15, 2010 at Los Angeles in the U.S.

EDIT: confirmed by a Nintendo spokesperson.

What's weird is that Nintendo frequently says that they won't release new tech until they have compelling software that demands it. But the DS was certainly not built that way, and I'd bet dollars to donuts that the 3DS is also a case of cart before the horse.

When I first read the news of the 3DS I started thinking of what Nintendo could have dreamed up that couldn't be done on anything other than this new system, as they have been spewing forth comments about not needing a Wii 2 until Miyamoto expressed interest in doing something that couldn't be done on Wii. However, the DS, as you eluded to, certainly didn't have anything super stellar from Nintendo at launch. Canvas Curse was great, but it took awhile for games to really make good use of the system - even those from Nintendo. I think the same will be true with 3DS. I'm sure they'll have a few tech heavy "games" at launch, but leave the playing field wide open for second and third parties. I mean, one of things the DS stands for is developer's system after all. Here's hoping they don't disappoint!

Yeah, I played the DS at E3 in 04 and I honestly can't think of a single game there that was worth making the DS.

Maybe MP:H? But the game itself was pretty bleh.

Funnily enough, I consider 3D gaming to be the kind of puerile nonsense that eight and nine year-olds would actually love, so the 3DS sounds like a pretty solid idea to me. I know 3D picture books amazed me when I was a child, and slowly got less and less impressive as I grew older and smarter, so for Sony to pretend that 3D gaming is some intensely mature experience is the stretch here.
We haven't seen the thing not its games and barely know anything about it, but Nintendo is already teh kiddie with a superficial gimmick!

This industry is worthless.

I actually saw that quote as him sticking up for Nintendo. Sony was the one saying only 9 year-olds play DS and they wouldn't be interested in 3D. Desctuctoid guy was just going along with their retarded logic of only 9 year-olds playing DS, and saying if that's what Sony thinks Nintendo's DS market is, then 3D would certainly be the most appealing to them.

And I have to agree. You're saying you wouldn't be even MORE excited for a 3D DS if you were 9?

@Het_Nkik

I think he meant Sony's comment is what made this industry worthless.

Who says they HAVE to reveal it at E3? E3 is not the only conference or time for companies to reveal stuff, though I will say that they are probably holding stuff back...a safe bet to be sure. Still I don't get as worked up and gung-ho about Nintendo stuff as you do, and I tend to look at things with a bit more...skepticism and not think, "ZOMG! THIS MEANS SOMETHING INCREDIBLE!" It certainly could be, but even though this tech is being shown it still doesn't mean that it WILL bring about something crazy in the near future. I just see it as people falling to the 'hype' like they do time after time, and when you cry wolf too many times...well...people grow skeptical about it.

THAT IS NOT...let me repeat myself...THAT IS NOT to say I am not looking forward to this. I certainly want to see what has been revealed to go places, but at the same time I will keep a very healthy grain of salt on hand just in case nothing comes about. DO I think Nintendo is up to something? Sure seems that way, indeed, but I am not holding my breath for some 'surprise' that may not even be coming around. If it does, great, if not...well...great all the same in that I won't be disappointed .

Except, I haven't hyped up this tech at all. I've simply provided technical information about the device and speculation as to what Nintendo's approach will be with the device, in the coming months. This isn't some OMGNINTENDOISBRINGINGTHEREVOLUTIONZ schtick. I'm not even all that excited about the 3D aspect to be honest. I'm looking forward to it, but I don't see it as the second coming.

My statement has nothing to do with optimism. It is my projection based on the strategic behavior of the company, using anecdotal and empirical evidence as reference points. Perhaps, I didn't convey that correctly, but I'm not 'hoping' that they'll have some big secret, I actually do believe that they are intentionally using misdirection as a strategic advantage. In Nintendo's position, they have to be very careful about how they do things, especially if they want to keep their advantage as the market leader.

I'm not certain of that. Nintendo usually innovates in control, not display. There's more to the 3DS than they have told us. That much I guarantee.

Oh yes, thats a given, in fact i do believe this is the top of the iceberg.

@CB200: I dont think its wise to dismiss sony completely, i see the company in the same way i saw nintendo in the gamecube days, just tying to finish the race in the best way they can. Nintendo then went with a huge idea and.... well we all know about that.

Of course i have nothing to prove this, is just my toughs.

Also the media will say gimmick, kiddie and casual, sometimes i think im in 2005/06 all over again.......

I'd be more excited about video games in general if I were 9. Or even 19. I feel I am an old, old man now. None of this stuff makes me particularly excited anymore. I'm going to PAX East and I'm not even looking forward to it.

@-JKR-

Exactly how old are you? Like, your actual age, not how you feel.

Google has absolutely ruined the art of arguing endlessly about pointless shit.

@NoName
Oh, yeah. I forgot about that. Let's all welcome the 3D Developer's System to the world. That should be the official name. Nintendo should steal generic from Sony!

And while they're at it, Yamauchi should bring SexyBack.

Ehhhhh...I'll certainly give Sony some wiggle room for sure, but them showing off their Sixaxis Controller, and now their new 'wand' thing...both shown after Nintendo had shown that they were going after motion control...that really didn't help them. The first one I could even chalk up to bad timing, but their newest thing? ...Confidence isn't too high at this point in time, but I do like surprises, so here's hoping.

If I still got excited about systems like I did when I was nine, then I'll still be going apeshit over systems like Jaguar because OMFG 64 BITS.

I stopped keeping track at 21. I don't think I'm 30 yet. 27-28-29? One of those. I think 27, soon to be 28. But then, a while ago I also thought I was 27, and my wife told me I wasn't yet. So I really don't keep track and get confused. It doesn't really matter much to me, because someone will tell me when I'm 30 and then I'll have to get my butt in gear and really start working harder to change the world. After all, then I'll REALLY "be old", lol.

I could figure it out, but I'd have to do math, and instead I'm going to go take a bath and soak these old, old bones of mine.

Sometimes I honestly do forget how old I am, and I have to calculate from my birthday. But sometimes I also forget what year it is so calculating doesn't help much. That's a bad sign, right?

Anyway, I'm like 99% sure this thing will also have tilt sensing, which means Nintendo would be STUPID to not bring back Kirby Tilt N' Tumble. Also Sega would be STUPID to not put a good team on a Monkey Ball game for it.

Watching those suckers roll around in 3D would make me giddy...

@-JKR- well, your profile says 28.

Then let's go with that, because it's probably right.

EDIT:

Also Zero, Sega is already stupid for not putting a good team on Monkey Ball, so I wouldn't hold your breath...

Not just Tilt'n'Tumble (which I rated a full 2 points higher than Metroid Prime), but Tilt'n'Tumble 2 a.k.a. ROLL-O-RAMA!! What the fuck, Nintendo! Every E3 without this game breaks my heart a little more.
