heh, I'm not sure on this. I not sold on 3D anything.. including Blu-Ray and 3DTV sets. It was worth it to make Sony look mentally retarded again since they are pushing 3D products themself.

Well I think Nintendo is pre-emptively misleading the competition. Making them think that this is the sole gimmick by using misdirection. Once everyone's attention is diverted, the real magic trick will be revealed...at E3, of course. And before anyone asks, no, I do not know what this magic trick will be.

@FestivusI'm not certain of that. Nintendo usually innovates in control, not display. There's more to the 3DS than they have told us. That much I guarantee.

Possibly, although given Sony's past track record I don't think that this is the case. Seems to me that this is Nintendo just doing their thing as usual.

And before anyone asks, no, I do not know what this magic trick will be. I don't think that Nintendo is doing that either. Just seems that they have picked a good time to show something and perhaps doing so is because of how terrible their E3 was last year. I don't remember the exact words but I know someone at Nintendo said that they knew they didn't do so hot at last year's E3 and that they took note of their mistakes. This could certainly be part of them (hopefully) delivering on their words and showing that they can have a solid E3 all around.

I'm pretty sure that quote was from TWO E3s ago. Not last time.

@-JKR- I don't think so. I don't think it was Iwata, but I am pretty sure that it was the most recent E3 because a lot of what was shown was WSR, sales charts, and similar montages like the E3 before that. It was also where they did the on-stage stuff of NSMB:Wii and their female spokesperson (Cammy?) really sounded bored out of her mind and monotone.

But if that was the case, they would have revealed the 3D aspect at E3. However, considering that this announcement was pretty much a stealth release, there is a reason it was done that way. There will be a surprise about the 3DS that no one will see coming as they are simply anticipating more info and hands-on with the 3D aspect of the device. It's a great strategy to make sure your competitors don't foresee specific features that you plan to reveal in the future. EDIT: For reference, the same strategy was applied to the DS reveal, which was initially revealed to have 2 screens, but no other information was disclose. We later found out that the DS had a touch screen.

@casper884i think nintendo has something else up its sleeve. I am thinkign something like a massive amount of memory for game downloads. Virtual console gamecube stlye? I think nintendo is going in a real strong direction with this system to rival the online capabilities of the xbox360 and the ease of access that apple has provided. This will be a very interesting concept and a handheld being in 3d is not enough to warrant a ew system just yet, there is alot more to this system than we currently know.

@CB200Yea, JKR is right, what was wrong with last year's E3? Other M, Galaxy 2, NSMBW, Golden Sun DS... What more could you have wanted?

Dammit!! I wanted pancakes. Fuck you, Nintendo. What's weird is that Nintendo frequently says that they won't release new tech until they have compelling software that demands it. But the DS was certainly not built that way, and I'd bet dollars to donuts that the 3DS is also a case of cart before the horse. (I don't care, though. The more wacky shit they can stuff in there, the better.)

@JargonAnd it took how long in the conference before those were finally gotten to? Having to sit through around half of the beginning of the conference listening to the same stuff that was done in the previous conference when people really just wanted to hear about the games? And comparing the time those games got as to their talk about numbers, numbers, WSR, which had been covered before...I wasn't the only one disappointed with E3 and no I am not remembering it wrong. The only good stuff I remember was the announcement of SMG 2, Metroid: Other M and ironically...the on-floor coverage and not the actual shows, which is the big draw of E3. Twice Nintendo disappointed on both of those fronts, and here's hoping they hook people with the show. @casper884Who says they HAVE to reveal it at E3? E3 is not the only conference or time for companies to reveal stuff, though I will say that they are probably holding stuff back...a safe bet to be sure. Still I don't get as worked up and gung-ho about Nintendo stuff as you do, and I tend to look at things with a bit more...skepticism and not think, "ZOMG! THIS MEANS SOMETHING INCREDIBLE!" It certainly could be, but even though this tech is being shown it still doesn't mean that it WILL bring about something crazy in the near future. I just see it as people falling to the 'hype' like they do time after time, and when you cry wolf too many times...well...people grow skeptical about it. THAT IS NOT...let me repeat myself...THAT IS NOT to say I am not looking forward to this. I certainly want to see what has been revealed to go places, but at the same time I will keep a very healthy grain of salt on hand just in case nothing comes about. DO I think Nintendo is up to something? Sure seems that way, indeed, but I am not holding my breath for some 'surprise' that may not even be coming around. If it does, great, if not...well...great all the same in that I won't be disappointed .

@CB200you're right, you weren't the only one disappointed, because way too many people expect things from E3 that just aren't going to happen. Some people have this mythical idea of E3, that just never existed. Did you watch the Microsoft conference? Can you actually say that that was 100% excitement? It was even longer and just as boring than Nintendo's, if you ask me. The truth is, these conferences weren't designed to be watched by thousands over the internet. They HAVE to talk about numbers. It's one of the big reasons the conference exists. Every year people have the same complaints. It's their fault for not adjusting their expectations, not Nintendo's for "failing to deliver"

The Cammy situation and all the charts. Last E3 was Golden Sun 2 and Metroid Other M reveal. I don't think too many people had an issue with last E3.

I think it's a case of the hardware being ready before the software was. Or more accurately, the hardware not being quite ready either, but Nintendo having to play its hand anyway to counter the PSP.

@PandareusWell I stand corrected there. He also said 2008 was bad though, so I thought CB was talking about that. Regardless, it's a reaction to expectations that just can't be met with today's 24 hour news cycle.
