Nintendo Co., Ltd. (Minami-ward of Kyoto-city, President Satoru Iwata) will launch "Nintendo 3DS"(temp) during the fiscal year ending March 2011, on which games can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses.
"Nintendo 3DS"(temp) is going to be the new portable game machine to succeed "Nintendo DS series", whose cumulative consolidated sales from Nintendo amounted to 125million units as of the end of December 2009, and will include backward compatibility so that the software for Nintendo DS series, including the ones for Nintendo DSi, can also be enjoyed.
We are planning to announce additional details at E3 show, which is scheduled to be held from June 15, 2010 at Los Angeles in the U.S.
There's a quote from a Nintendo spokesman. It's real... unless the whole world is rick-rolling us.
I actually just found this and I was going to post this. Looks like it's legit.
I'm not really sure how I feel about this. I have yet to really be blown away by 3D movies, so while a 3D handheld is interesting, it's not something that blows me away. I'll have to see more about it before I make my decision, but if this was just a 3D DS and not a new generation, I probably wouldn't be interested. But being that I bought a DS, DS Lite, and DSi all at launch, I'll probably buy this.
You know, all these years, I was wanting to upgrade my DS to one of the newer models, especially when I first bought the original DS 3 months before the Lite came out. Then I didn't have the money to get the DSi.
Now I'm not gonna pass it up when this comes. Color me excited.
I'm at work, but just had to get in a "WUUUHHH" here. Awesome that it won't need glasses, I can't wait to see what kind of games they're cookin'. Could be good if done right. Color me double intrigued for E-3.
@Simbabbad I'm willing to wait and see how it is, it just seems to me that I hear a lot of hype about 3D movies, and I have yet to be hugely impressed by them. I mean, it's a cool novelty, but that's it. Of course,I haven't seen Avatar so maybe that would blow my mind.
I hope it is cool though. And I'm willing to wait and see.
this is true. I got hte ds when i was in 11th the week it launched back in 2004. 7 year handheld life cycle is just about the right time for nintendo to rip us off in sales for the technology and then throw us a bone with the 3ds and initially sell the console with no profit but a massive software profit. Id love for this handheld to have hi res gamecube quality graphics, but if i am going to be paying 50 bucks a game I do not want to pay 200+ for the system
Just got the news yesterday. I guess it is real. The timing is hilarious considering just yesterday I was going to make it my aim to get some concrete information on the [at the time] rumor today, lol.
Honestly you're not forced to care for those little changes. 99.99% of the libraries are still working, so...
It seems pretty normal to me for a handheld. Compare this with all the different 360 and PS3...
Comparing largely feature identical 360's, with the exception of hard drive space, is different than the DS Lite to the DSi, at least to me. The feature sets on those are pretty different.
Fair enough with the PS3 though.
I guess what it comes down to is me not being compelled to buy a new revision of a home console for a more than a couple hundred bucks, but I'm likely going to be tempted by a new revision of a handheld that's around $100. I'm a sucker for handheld gaming systems. I don't know why, I just... am.
